It's funny that you've got me defending Mac in the same thread I started about taking mine out back and shooting it.

It's funny that you've got me defending Mac in the same thread I started about taking mine out back and shooting it. Mac folks will spend a whole thread complaining how their couple year old mac won't keep up while simultaneously trying to justify a brand new one that will only last a couple years.

Thread title sounds like a good "bad" Country Song.
But maybe a little too PC for my taste. Too bad "Mac" Davis is gone now. Chris

It’s maybe worth it to buy a new external drive and copy stuff over, then do the system wipe and reinstall. I say maybe because it could be many hours of unpaid labor, and in the end back to same place. However you would at least have a backup of stuff, and probably extra storage. I have like 3 usb drives now..

I'm on a 2012 tower. Rocking quite literally every day for 10+ years now....

Apple has a grip on education and thus the kids get hooked early. My kids had a full lockdown education with Mac's and only mac's. What did they go and do? Both of em are fully on PC's in their adult lives. LOL Apple can try all they want. People are going to choose what works best for them.

They only use PC's, though they grew up with iPods, iPads and iPhones.

I have definitely looked into the idea of building a rackmount, purpose-built PC for running Cubase and Cubase only. The two things that scare me away are Thunderbolt compatibility / reliability and security. The sad fact is that we've left the days of being able to keep your computer offline with all these $%^&* authorization apps. Each and every one of them is another potential vulnerability.
I'm sure there will be a flurry of responses telling me these fears are unfounded, but when were fears ever completely rational? Sure, the Mac OS world is not without its issues - but compatible is compatible, and secure feels secure.
But again, I've been using a Mac since it was just "The Macintosh". MasterTracks Pro was my jam. I used it for sample-triggering on drums, editing the VCA automation (I forget the brand, but I had one of those 8-channel VCA boxes you could run off your inserts. Has it been a perfect, symbiotic relationship? Well, no. Neither camp can claim this.
Waiting for the Linux / Ardour users to show up and rag on us both. That's the guy you don't talk to anymore because he thinks cancer can be cured with yoga and only eats free range, fair trade pudding.

Most of the kids that come through the studio are mac-only for life. Like I said, most are absolutely surprised that my <500$ (used) computer hangs with their 2K$ macs because they've been told by teachers and friends that macs are the only choice "for creatives". Since I'm close to SCAD and other art schools, I've had a lot of future, current and former art school students through the studio for various jobs. 80-90% of them have macs.

I used to keep my stuff offline in the 2K/XP/7 days but since 10 and 11 I've left them online and haven't had a single issue. The biggest piece of security comes with not clicking on random websites and links. The vast majority of nefarious actors rely on spoofing/phishing with something like official-looking emails containing links that send you to a fake login where they fool you into entering your information willingly. Very few security violations come from true viruses or worms these days. The security suite in windows is pretty decent these days but it can slow the machine down during background scanning. I tend to put it on a schedule so that it scans when I'm not using it.

I hear ya:) Can you wipe the drive and re-install the software that works or buy a used m1 mini ? I recently wiped my old MBP and its so much faster now. A great companion to my M1 mini for quick video edits.

My system drive is at about capacity This could easily be your problem. Your system drive needs typically needs a bunch of swap space to work with, even if your audio files are on another drive.
I just had this issue. Try to get to ~10% free at least.

Yeah, I went deep on killing off any unnecessary junk I could find and I’ve got that up to about 12 gigs. We have a great Mac repair place here in Manhattan called the Rossman Group. Apple absolutely can’t stand them because they offer competent repairs at fair prices (when my MBP went down last year, Apple Store wanted $850 up front, RG found a broken solder joint next to the usb socket I used for charging and fixed it for a cash tip). Anyways, they gave me the bad news that the 2018 mini can not have the actual hard drive changed out, so my choices are to upgrade the computer or boot from an external.
It just sucks because I don’t even have the room to upgrade my OS at this point. my own fault for spending the bare minimum on internal HD capacity.

What about moving your sample libraries to an external SSD (if you haven’t already done so)? If you also keep your sessions on another external SSD it would free up a lot of space and make it much easier when you do eventually upgrade to a new cpu.

This is an all-too-familiar scenario, I am sure - but I'm just gonna vent for a second. As the title more than subtly implies, the best solve for my current issues upgrading to Cubase Pro 12 is to pull out that "what the government doesn't know about" bangstick from under my bed (back in the 90's, rappers were so much better at bartering), driving my mac out to upstate new york, and unloading a good 50 or 60 rounds of 124gr 9mm JHP's into its former self. "Cubase Pro 12 runs sooooo much better" they said. I had my apprehension. My 2018 mini is definitely at the end of its usefulness as a studio computer - but under Pro 11, everything was simpatico. Yeah, you'd have to goose the buffer a bit on busy mixes sometimes, but that's been the same for decades. "Ohhh, this new processor is 50x faster... which is why we made our app 50x more bloated!" I've got a CPU meter that's spiking like crazy with maybe two or three plugins and a couple hw inserts - before I ug'd it wouldn't have so much as flickered. Now I'm deep into the dark corners of the internet, trying to find anyone who's got a solve for this. My system drive is at about capacity, so I can't install both. Dropping $2k on a Mac Studio isn't in the offing right now either. Why, why, why.... why did I not listen to that intuition to not upgrade? Steinberg accidentally did one of their "double sales" where you got a Labor Day deal plus a coupon code, so I upgraded a full version for $40. I should have just held onto it. Anyway, if you hear something like an Uzi mag-dumping into a little metal square? It's probably just some dude's lawnmower. Nothing to worry about. Not audio but I was thinking of you all day as I was deep into a CAD drawing and for F%*ing reason every time I tried to mirror an image it was off setting angles by a couple of degrees!!! If I could have opened one of the windows it would have been flying!

So much of it is what your going to do on the machine even if the software is available for both certain industries gravitate towards one or the other. This reminds me of a couple of years ago Jim Cramer had the idea Apple should buy either Cerner or Epic Health information l systems, Yeah because hospitals are going to pay for premium boxes! They buy the cheapest POS they can.
