Well, seen as I have both..
I want to buy something a bit more "obvious" - maybe a Blue Stripe 1176 maybe a Chandler Opto - don't know really. My two tracking comps are a Retro STA Level and a Phoenix Mastering Plus (doubles up from living on my stereo mix bus) these are two fantastic Vari MU compressors but they are incredibly silky smooth and invisible in their compression envelope - like a colour box with a fader attached. I just need to gather the energy to book a couple of demos - Access Analog is good for demo's but it's not quite the same as hands on tactile feedback. The Acme is definitely the obvious one, in fast mode it does a convincing early rev 1176 all buttons too. What's your application for this? I might have something better in mind.

Two candidates for you: The Sound Skulptor MP 566 tube pre doesn't sound bad as a cleanish pre and is great fun when driven. Sounds great as a bass DI. Not very expensive and a fun DIY build. www.soundskulptor.com/en/proddetail.php?prod=MP566Link Audio, who's been doing various DIY SSL Eqs and Pres for some time is now greatly expanding his range this autumn, with a compressor, a Neumann Eq, various API-based pres with added features, etc. www.linkaudiodesign.de/shopFeature packed, and hence not beginner kits like the less convoluted MP-566, also the inevitable ergonomics issues. There's less space for each knob, but oooh all the stuff he manages to pack into single width modules! And very friendly pricing.

The Phoenix Gyrator EQ is mostly always on bass for me. What do you guys mostly use the GB-1 and the Stretch on? Stretch is parallel lead vocal ALL DAY for me. Dab'll do!

The Stretch looks good in terms of comments, reviews, etc. I guess I will have to check it out. Darn - I was trying to avoid "incoming" for a while.

Such a great compressor. A sensible modern update to classic fet compression. Similar in that sense, but totally different sounding is the Empress ECM-519. I’m shocked that has never had much hype. APA Leviathan is a sleeper optical comp. Sweet tone and classy action.

The Link stuff is really good and the performance absolutely belies the price tag. If you are moderately experienced with building circuits, the preamps aren't particularly challenging (the EQ's are like a ship in a bottle, the PCB's are tight, your margin of error with a big solder blob creating accidental conductance with a nearby path is small). Of course, there's a cottage industry of builders out there who'll sell them to you built - though some are charging double the kit price or more. Solid State Logic's console preamps don't have a lot of fans because they aren't plushy, vintage/vintage-inspired, transformer-based designs. That's not a fair or even logical comparison - SSL were trying to evolve into parts unknown with ultra-fast, ultra-high-bandwidth, uber-mega-clean designs with tons of headroom. That was the 80's preamp / eq arms race. The 9K-J SuperAnalogue preamp is fantastic if the intention is to grime things up in post. I built up a pair of those from the Bruno2000 design (PCB Grinder still has the PCB's, but LinkAudio sells it as an entire kit - no part substitutions like the MAT-02 or older half-wave rectifiers). That's a true BOM scavenger hunt. All that said, the Link E01 pres are based on the original 4K-E boards. You've got an actual transformer AND a Colour slot. That'll let you go from a pretty clean, shiny signal to a full-on hairfest if you put on something like an HRK Sputnik

Standard Audio Stretch is so useful for finding a spot for something characterful in a mix. That's a really good description!
