I'll start (might as well).
Today I found a use for both the KM184 and 6176, they're both decent pieces of equipment but I've never been like oh my wow. It's obvious that a darker, softer pre-amp would pair well with a brighter mic but a bit of toob saturation made the combination quite magical.

I always liked the KM-184, but it seems I lose friends when I say that out loud.

I found out that the guitar sound on a lot of my favorite Krautrock records is a Schaller Fuzz pedal.

Found out the keyboard shortcut in Pro Tools to change the grid is OPT-CMD plus or minus on the numeric...

Not today but last week? Earthworks style omni for outside kick?
Super rad. Why oh why have I never tried that before?
And I've always liked the UA 6176 and KM184. TLM103's too. All super useful.
Maybe I'm just weird..?

Today I looked for a passable drum VSTI and I came across this: www.soniccouture.com/en/products/32-drums/g76-sun-drums/I also repaired my Stam SA-2A (new meter / knob was loose) and slotted in the Acme Opticom XLA-500. I'm mainly composing at the moment but I do need to clean, de-clutter and re-wire everything at some point. That seems like a tomorrow problem..

Throwing my Warm 47jr into Figure 8, and engaging the Focusrite Air Mode helped a lot. (High Rent version would be an ISA Pre) Not near the BU67 on loan, but pretty nice nonetheless. Good "travel/practice" mic now. Chris

Sometimes, Motif strings is all you need to take your track to a whole other level in a short section.

Maybe I'm just weird..? I was recording a rehearsal one day years ago with some friends so I threw up an Omni capsule on an old modded oktava. Unbeknownst to us, the mic stand got loose and the mic was down near the floor by the kick drum. Sounded massive. I should do that again. Oh wait, I don’t record drums anymore!

I learned I really, really love Canare L4e5, baby starquad cable in racks, super flexible, awesome RF/ EMI rejection. Also that you need to make sure you order the correct Canare speaker cable, the “gray” jacket is the stiffer install version, the black is a 13ga 4 conductor that is almost as flexible as Starquad mic cable.

A Sennheiser MKH 30 is a wicked kick drum mic.

Today not in my studio but a friends podcasting studio. Next big gear investment is definitely a CNC. I came over to wire a couple of panels, label screw ups and a couple of miss punched holes. I figure the ability to take a cheap Blank panel and create a true custom panel as well as churn out cabinets are worth every penny. Plus I know I will be more active in prototype revisions if I can simply redraw in CAD and then cut it.
Besides maybe I’ll do cheap work for friends, think a knock down unfinished rack with finger joints!

I understand. But that's it. We can't be friends any more now. <sigh> OK... <looks down at shoes/kicks imaginary can> <sigh> LMAO! Unpopular take: If you can keep the acoustic instrument completely on-axis, the KM184 can be a technically better mic due to its much lower self-noise.
(you run a KM84 into a 'vibey' tubey mic pre, into an EQ with any kind of boosting, into an LA3a or LA4 or a 76 and self noise is up to about 23db. . . did some quick arithmetic)

The grain / distortion they produce just annoys me and I'm always looking for something more articulate. I thought it was Neumann specific at one point until I discovered the TLM-170 / 193 and KM184, the latter also makes a good vocal mic (for me at least).
I'm sure I'll sit alone in the corner shouting clarity between the boundary walls but on a positive note it saves me a fortune. Unfortunately I still like the 251 even though my wallet doesn't.

But did you know that having a 184 and a 67 instead, are exactly equal to your 251? Easy. Just watch... 184 +67 ---- 251 See. I told 'ya! Chris

After a whole cluster fuck with trying to upgrade Sketchup, so I could use a bunch of plugins I find learning Turbocad a major pain in the ass. Today, I need a drink.

I don’t love the Neumann mics with the tlm type amps but my god give me some Beyers or the shure ksms or working EVs over iffy vintage stuff. There have been a lot of sdc advances and like the beyer md201 and ev635a are jsut better mics for most uses than sm57. So are the super scooped Audix mics on the right kit I just prefer to avoid plastic sounding mics like Audix on most kits. Some of the modern not shit plastic sounding condensers like the beyer snap on Tom condensers and the at side address are cool though because they have so much stick in the recording, you can nuke away the plastic with something cool and still have a stick instead of a thud

I dig omni mics on all kinds of things. Especially guitar cabs when someone says "I wish it sounded just like my amp" well... ok! Nifty problem solvers & great creative tools. Stuck it on the kick drum because I'm always trying to challenge myself & not do the same shit over & over. Stand slippage... long time ago in a galaxy far away I remember having a 58 on a bass cab. Not many options at that point... but somehow it either slipped or got bumped and was at like a 45 angle, pointed towards the floor. Moved it back on axis... didn't like it as much and pointed it back towards the ground.

They do offer one thing though they are easy and quick as hell to set up and get an exceptable tone. That’s why they are a favorite live, anyone I know who uses them always talks about how easy they are. If you have time to position and tune drums avoid, but if your late for a gig because the truck overheated again, put them up and run. It’s one of those set of tools for a very specific situation and I have been there way to often to not carry them.
