As an old Pro Tools user I'm just not gelling with Logic, even from a Midi side I find the former more intuitive.
I could go back to Pro Tools, I don't have HDX HW anymore but I also bought Pro Tools 9 (regular) and I could buy a crossgrade to Studio perpetual for next to nothing. How is it nowadays? I have an SSL Big Six so I can get around the HW inserts not having a ping facility. I'd still need delay compensation to work properly though, had a look at DUC and there still seems to be a few issues. Although there is in Logic as well so..
Reaper? I've not tried it in years and don't know much about it.
Cubase we used at Uni, again can't remember much about it.
Any more ideas?

Longtime Cubase user here. Over the last few years they’ve made the GUI look more and more like logic, but it’s very customizable and you can arrange windows however you want. I think the routing and GUI is pretty intuitive, more so than logic, it’s like PT in that all the routing, channels, groups, vca’s etc model an analog mixer workflow.
Delay compensation is figured out in all places, busses, plug-ins etc. and they have a HW insert plugin that allows you to ping for delay times.
MIDI has always been good to great. Cubase did start out as a sequencer after all.
Steinberg has always been ahead of Pro Tools as far as features (but that’s not saying much).
Cubase has a dedicated listen bus which is awesome. It’s like the center section of a console and let’s you set cue mixes, adjust playback volume and allows you to place plugins on your listen bus, independent of your master fader. So if you use sonar works etc you don’t have to worry about disengaging the plug-in when bouncing.
Speaking of bouncing, Cubase has some good options for bouncing stems, rendering audio in place, and rendering midi to audio.
Over all I really love it.
Although…I did try Studio One a while ago and almost switched. It was setup great for songwriting and production but was a little light on mixing/routing features. It’s worth checking out too.

Longtime Reaper user. I love it, but it takes a while to learn and there’s always more it can do. Kind of a limitless daw but you have to set everything up yourself. I did love Logic for all the built in loops/instruments etc, but if you already have a nice library of stuff, Reaper is fantastic.

Couldn't recommend Ableton more.
Logic felt like a slug to me last time I tried it

If you can get Pt for next to nothing then dive in and see how you like it now. It’s something you’ll be instantly familiar with, which is never a bad thing.

I’m lazy so Danny I’ll just say do you really want to learn another software and it’s idiosyncrasies? Just Upgrade the PT lic. Even then I will admit the IPod version of Cubase is a blast for stupid quick stuff.

Reaper. You can reskin it to look and feel how you want. Works just like any of the others but for cheaper. Their updates and bug fixes are second to none.

might as well add Cakewalk to the list the free version from Bandlab is much improved from when it cost $$$
I'd consider switching to something else (I have SAmplitude and Mixbus32c) but the third party AZcontrol midi software for Cakewalk lets me customize midi controllers and I don't know of another program that provides that functionality (azslow.com). Whenever I try to switch over to another DAW and the controllers can't be customized the same way I give up and go back to what works for me.
Overall it's been good for me to stop looking elsewhere and get on with using this setup.

I never could get along with Reaper but many people love it. I'm a Nuendo user since about 2000. I also use Cubase. Personally, I think they are great. very powerful and I rarely have any trouble. I'm on PC and use a Lynx Aurora 16.

I have to keep up with 6 DAWs for various clients. PT, Ableton, Logic, Reaper, FL Studio and DP and there's been others I've let go, Nuendo, Reason, Acid Pro, that Sony one from like 1998, etc. They're all great in some ways and annoying in others. It's all about comfort and speed, get it out of your brain with the least pain and keep going. While I'll hate an aspects of one I'll see the client use it in amazing ways that gives me workflow ideas for the others. Only you know you, if PT's silly pricing is less pain that stumbling to record when an idea is burning go back, I don't feel too bothered these days when on my native system, sill prefer HDX but it doesn't stop any work from happening.

Reaper won me, because I zoom in and around a project like crazy, I’m all over the place very fast. Sort of like a video game. I’ll often be at channels and groups and master and outputs and in the same 10 seconds, just A.D.D.-ing as fast as possible, drawing sends and inserting plugin chain presets etc

Even then I will admit the IPod version of Cubase is a blast for stupid quick stuff. Yeah, so it seems Pro Tools still doesn't play nice with UA plugins (if you use a Satellite).. Although I'm not sure if I'd put that in the pro's or con's list, it would save me $800.00, a spare power slot and a connection to my machine so?! *Half raised face
I just need a decent room sim and vocal echo, Tokyo Dawn and all the shiny hardware is good for the rest. Apart from that it seems much improved and it would cost me $200.00 to get back into it.. Not baaad, not baaad.
Tbone81 , Cubar looks cool thanks for the description.
svart , tell me more.. I've heard a decent amount of groans in the wind about it being less than user friendly alongside having a very basic midi feature set. The wibbly web says it's lightning fast and crash free though which is cool.

Of course there's no "best" DAW, just like there's no best ice cream flavor. Except for mint chip. Disclaimers aside, I'm +1 for Reaper.

It literally has the same buttons and boxes that all other daws have. Sometimes they are in different places, sometimes called different things, but they're all there. I haven't used the midi stuff very much but I'm currently building a dedicated workstation that will have two keyboard controllers running midi and USB into Reaper. I'll report back on how it works.

These threads crack me up. - first - EVERY DAW ever made suggested as an option. - second - TOTAL FAN LOVE for every DAW ever made. - third - TOTAL HATRED for every DAW ever made. I can see the remarks (mine included) before they are ever posted. Hahaha! Round and round. Then, the thread gets worn out and dies. LOL My vote of for Pro Tools! No surprise here - anyone see that coming?

This time I didn't even bother to explain why I love Studio One. Just... Studio One. Do it. Studio One has only one knock against it, nobody uses it. Other than that, it's perfect.

GO BACK! And with the power of Macs now you can do Ultimate (think it now has a new name) without the HDX cards.

Having 2 control rooms with Harrison consoles, Harrison Mixbus 32c was a natural choice from my work-flow experience of using Harrison consoles for over 40 years. Check it out.

Opcode Studio Vision Pro.
You’ll have to find a Mac from the late 90s to run it.
😂
(Yes, I am totally kidding, but... based upon truth… It’s the one I used when I was first getting started.)
