Recently I got myself a BAE 1073 DMP and love it. It sounds great, looks and feels like it will last a long time with the build style. Now want a rack unit and I am torn between these two types, the BAE MP/MPF dual channel or the BAE 1073 full unit. Help? My thoughts so far: Part of me is leaning towards the BAE 1073 MP/MPF dual because: 1. I'm used to tracking without EQ and think I appreciate the simplicity and less to consider. 2. Two channels is more than one, ha! 3. Ability to run stereo sources, mixes through both channels (not sure how much I would use this tbh) 4. I hate having gear around that I don't use. Having a expensive 1073 unit with an EQ i never use would be shameful and I'd downgrade. Part of me is leaning towards the BAE 1073 (full rack module with EQ) 1. People saying having the EQ in the circuit contributes to the great sound 2. I only really use one preamp at the time 3. Would love to be able to have a more 'finished' sound from the get-go (w. EQ?) 4. Will / should I man up and get into using the EQ tracking? Feels like I might be there now, more than ever. LINK: The little test-drive I had with the BAE 1073 DMP (mixed). Keep in mind that I'm no pro, so go easy on me

If you go with the BAE 1073MPF, get the "Bootsy Mod" on the L channel. It is one hell of a DI.

I have used all three versions and I find the full rack units to sound the best... not sure exactly what contributes to that, but one of the spots I track out of has both a DMP and several of the ones with EQ in the same room, and I found there to be a noticeable difference (favorable) to the one with the EQ. Also, a little EQ on the way in never hurt anybody. The low band is really fantastic on kicks, snares, and bass and the mid band is great for cutting mud/boxiness.

If you remember, would you mind elaborating exactly what difference you heard between the FULL unit and the MPs?

This was probably about 3 or 4 years ago but I just remember popping into the DMP on a vocal and feeling like it sounded a bit different than I was used to with the rack units, swapped into one of rack units with EQ and it sounded more like I was expecting. I feel like the top end felt slightly rolled off in comparison? It could have been all sorts of things thinking about it now... either way, I have only patched into the rack units in that room since. Probably doesn't help, but that's all I got!

I have the one with the EQ and it does make a noticeable difference just switching the EQ into circuit.
The HPF is great for tracking and pulling out some room and my BAE unit has a great DI on it.

Never heard the BAE although I've had a couple of AMS 1073's before the Shelfords and they're gone if that says anything. They're probably one of the best pre-amp / EQ / sat and DI boxes I've ever heard. Not overly struck on the compressor but many seem to like it?!
The Shelford's problem IMO centre's around cost, it's one of those where you either love the sound and nothing else will do or a cheaper alternative may suffice just as well. I do recommend trying one though..

If I had the extra cash I would get a BAE 1023 (1073 with extra EQ points). At the very least I would get the MPF. I have the MP and I often wish I had that HP filter.
