In my DeEsser thread @johnkenn mentioned the Sibilance plug, so I started poking around on the Waves site. The IR 1 convolution reverb is on sale as well, and I'm pretty tempted to try it for $29.
I'm looking for impressions on sound and workflow.
Also, if anyone has gotten into making impulses, how easy was it to use in IR 1?

Ok, so I have not gotten into making IRs, but when I have used IR-1 (and TL Space) I was always confused why the plates and chambers were great but the rooms were meh. The Sunset Sound reverb is also IR based and it’s sooooo much better for room. Maybe it’s those rooms though.

I actually have found that each of the CLA Drum Room presets have a different thing they do. I’ll put one of those on a Drumbus at like 10%. Sometimes a single acoustic low percent to give it space.

It was my go to IR before Spaces2. Tip: if you use the "efficient stereo" version, you get an actual dual mono input matrix, which I've ranted about the lack of in software reverbs for years--as it allows you to pan into the reverb aux to define where early reflections slap. Whole collection of 96khz IRs or some great studios and scoring stages. If you use Cubase or Logic, there's an argument that the built in IR reverbs are good enough...and this represents kind of a "slight improvement"--but, if you're working in a DAW without a GOOD IR reverb (and collection of spaces for it)...it's impossible to beat for $30.
Is Spaces2 "$200 better than IR1"? I mean...it's better. But, there are far less "studio" IRs. For a point of reference, they were seeking to find out why Apple's Space Designer sounded so much better than third party IR reverbs with the same IRs they were making for their instruments. I think they succeeded.
I don't make IRs...I have downloaded some home spun of various hardware reverb units I was familiar with...and loaded them into IR1--they sounded nothing like the hardware (which I had sitting here at the time). No idea how much of that is IR1 and how much is conversion of whomever made the IRs. So, loading is pretty self explanatory...not sure about the making them yourself.

If you’re really thinking about a third-party IR verb, it’s worth it to take a look at Reverberate 3 from LiquidSonics. It is fantastic. ragan is a big fan, too.

I'm not consciously looking, I happened upon the IR 1 sale. I probably shouldn't jump into it right now. I've got so much I'm not dialed into yet with my new system...

Waves lets you download the full IR 1 library from their site for free... which can load into Reverberate 3 with auto-created presets.

IR1 is wonky to me. Finnicky, whacky. You can coax some decent sounds out of it but it's weird. I prefer almost any other IR reverb plugin.
If I was using IR1, I would design some "custom" presets, like I don't know, 5 or 10, and just use it that way.
But even the preset browser is a hassle to operate, it's annoying.
Like notneeson said Sunset Sound is sort of my go-to for this type of thing.

Sunset does that, but it's the only one I've owned that can cut it. (I don't have Ocean Way, or Fame etc. I'm sure there are others).

Waves lets you download the full IR 1 library from their site for free... which can load into Reverberate 3 with auto-created presets. It's in ".WIR" format. Just double checked. Is that just something you can rename ".WAV" and import it? Or has Liquidsonics specifically reverse engineered Waves' format?

Reverberate 3 loaded them fine, use the 'Load IR' browser to select the first WIR file, then the 'Fill Bank From Current IR' to pull in the rest of the impulses in that folder.

I just pulled the trigger on AudioThing's Fog Convolver, which is on sale for $35 (including tax). I haven't tried it, but I really like that company. Speaking of which if you want to do the dolby thing their Type A is freaking perfect. I like to put it on an aux and sent various things to it to add a little excitement and sparkle without just piling on Hi Shelf EQ.
I'm still considering the IR 1 because it's also so cheap and their library is pretty extensive as I understand it.
Do I really need TWO convolution reverbs? I don't even like reverb all that much.

I have IR 1 and Reverberate 3
I don't make IRs. I've tried a bunch of paid & free ones
I don't use IR 1. Use Reverberate 3 a bunch, has good built in EQ/effects/routing
Also use Seventh Heaven which is easier to dial in, based off just the Bricasti ones I think
