Just a mention. Waves Sibilance is really good. How does it compare to the Waves DeEsser? They are both on sale for 29 bucks

It’s not the most intuitive, but I’ll start with Pro DS and if that’s not working, this thing will clamp down on something.
Oh - you know what is a great deeser? Melodyne.

If only ESS-es I usually just automate fades where I can. When a vocal is really bad, I have been removing resonances with Tokyo Dawn TDR Nova GE in front of everything to get to a base point I can sculpt from.

Just a mention. Waves Sibilance is really good. How does it compare to the Waves DeEsser? They are both on sale for 29 bucks They're totally different. The old Waves DeEsser and Renaissance DeEsser really aren’t bad for totally obliterating the top and making an “ess” into a greatly diminished “ephth.” And sometimes that actually might be what one is looking for, even though it’s heavy-handed. Waves Sibilance, OTOH, can be *very* transparent. I love how it handles things, and I don’t find it difficult to use at all. I still hate Waves and Waves’s WUP system, though. That thing is still a bad deal. But Sibilance is dang good. Between it and the new Clarity plugins, it makes me think Waves has hired some new coders or something.

I basically blow off WUP until I've got to upgrade. I wasn't going to with the new Mac Studio, but was in a middle of something that used the API stuff, and I still like the Kramer HLS as well, so I gave in. I wouldn't have even looks, but John suggested Sibilance so I looked, and then..$29 bucks...

I’ve cut down on the volume and issue of sibilants since I started tracking with the Retro STA Level - with my voice and vocal chain it has a very musical de-essing quality to it.
And then for any left, if it’s one of my own songs I take the extra time to manually de-ess vocal tracks, it’s time consuming but I feel the results justify the extra effort.
If it’s a production for a client or a demo then I reach for the Fab Filter DS which I think does a very good job with minimum artifices.

Not sure if this is how John does it, but I do all of my vocal editing in Melodyne, so it's really convenient to just chop off the hard consonants and pull the volume down by 2 or 3 dB.
Same thing for breaths, except I pull them down 7 or 8 dB. Works like a charm.
I'll often still end up using a de-esser or two after the fact, but having a more even starting point makes things easier to work with downstream.

Note: The original Waves Deesser has a major drawback. When it hits zero, it absolutely hard clips. Waves Sibilance does not do do this and is way more transparrent. BUT, There are some times when I really want to use the somewhat heavy handed approach of the original Waves Deesser. Like, on violin. It does a great job of smoothing out some hard bow scrapes. I'm sure I can get the same results with most any dynamic EQ, but the Waves Deesser is stupid simple. Just don't let it get to 0dB.
Lately, I've been using the Weiss Deesser and Wave Sibilance. I also have T-Deeser but I have not really had time to mess with it much.

Looks like slate just released their DBX 902 emulation. If anyone here has the slate subscription, let us know how it sounds. fb.watch/dEE7sZh5ny/

OK, I realized after reading that I have Waves Sibilance. I put it up and it is much more flexible that the original Waves plugin. I like the visual guide as well.

Slate used to talk about how the Eiosis DeEsser was the best on the planet, how you would never need another ever again, etc., etc., etc. Yet here he is releasing another DeEsser. Hmmm.

Oh...I didn't even think of that. No idea! I forgot about the Eiosis de-esser. I thought it was awful! edit: On second thought the fact that it is the “FG”-DS902 should mean Fabrice Gabriel still coded it 👍🏻

They’re running out of shit to emulate. Brainworx is doing made up AMEK gear. The Fuse Tascam 688 channel strip happened and then Ik had to get in on it with bad convolution plugs. Alesis 3630 plug from waves coming with noise included when? SSL now sells hardware to control the emulation of the hardware…

To that point, did anyone here like the Bomb Factory 1176? I used it on MacOS8 and 9 before AVID bought it.
Back on topic, I find the Sonnox Oxford Suppressor useful.

I had the BF 1176 on PT10 and I didn't think it was anything special. I did the first few months on PT using only stock plugins, and compression was the first thing I outsourced.

BF 1176 still works for me here on the latest version of Pro Tools! It has a certain aggressiveness that is just right at times. the other mark williams I'm glad there is someone else that misses those abbey road plugs as much as me! They are the reason I have the Chandler hardware 😁
