;We're backordered from here to beyond the foreseeable future. Cheers, bp Backordered? Step up to the bench or hire someone. Don't leave them waiting. That 2 bus is counting on you. Assembly is not the problem. Parts being unavailable and backordered are out of our control. Sadly, we're in the exact same situation as almost all smaller botique audio manufacturers who didn't have hundreds of thousands of parts in storage. We've had parts on order for well over a year that have yet to be fully delivered. Frightening actually. Gets into the realm of international global politics though.... Won't go there. The good news is, we're making good progress finally after over 6 months of horrible delays. Now, back to summing mixers. Have you don't a test like the one I mentioned above? What are your thoughts! <thumbsup>

Bill you chiming in on every thread on here hyping something you profit from is just a bit over the line. Sorry. It's my honest opinion. I should have put that I'm biased. I normally do. And of course I am. Still...I've done the above tests, and that's my honest opinion. Worth stating IMO. We don't need to sell any more mk2's. We're backordered from here to beyond the foreseeable future. Cheers, bp FWIW I didn't find DrBills message as a dubious sales pitch. I understand hes involved with LTL, and found the general info and perspective helpful.

I'll get the jerseys made up, a theme song, mascots, hotdogs and beer, and we'll have a "Dr. Bill vs RGO People" match up game! I'm already seeing the teams form.
Dr. Bill's team is called the "Silver Bullets" and the other team is called "Reasonable Doubters."

Similar. I spent 20 years fulltime mixing through consoles, Neve, QuadEight and Electrodynes mainly. I sold my consoles, and tried ITB and never felt it compared. (kept my Electrodyne modules and a couple of Q8 Coranado strips)
Then I went with a summing mixer and found the ultimate way forward. What a huge difference.
I love the outcome when I can patch in API's / Electrodynes / Coils / Neves - plus outboard EQ's and comps across any channel / aux bus or the mix bus.
All have a huge impact on my mixes - let alone the amazing stereo image from my summing mixers.
In my world - I have had 3 decades to compare OTB vs ITB mixing. Summing mixers married with killer hardware are the way forward for me - forever.
Same here. Started making records when open reels & console was the only option. Never fully bought into the early days of PT and kept my analog junk while everyone started selling theirs to buy more plugins. Memory says the OG Dangerous 2 bus was the first real summing box on the market? I remember being up at Chris's studio in midtown and they, him and like 2 other people were building them in the tech room. The core idea, the entire launch point was being able to patch some analog outboard onto the backend, treating the DAW as a tape machine while not needing the footprint & expensive of a big desk. ITB vs analog summing is as old a debate as anything else. Goes back the monolith era & stonehenge. Monkeys pounding on rocks. Its a really different way of working & adds a level of commitment... and honestly some extra hassle on recalls. Not like the old days of documenting a 56 channel desk... but its not an F1 pit stop where the whole project comes back in 2.7 seconds either. If its not obvious I'm decidedly in the analog camp... the "D" word barely gets mentioned around here. But sometimes I mix ITB too, depends on the project... deadlines... that sort of thing. I can make either one sound great or terrible. Its not the gear its how we hear.

It's not that I have any issue with the product or the company. You just don't find company reps jumping into conversation to hype their device. We know there are other members here who certainly could talk about their solutions.

Now, please don’t twist what I was saying against Dr. Bill who has been nothing but kind to me and my family in recent years. He’s a gentleman and someone who speaks from his experience, and I can’t recall him intentionally running another person down up here. Forgive me, if I read something into your text that wasn’t there, but I am responding to you what read like an unprovoked attack on him.

Dr. Bill invented to master bus processing concept with the silver bullet, so I feel like he gets a pass!
It’s really a genius idea he brought to the industry, esp home studios who struggle with affording quality stuff to work 1 or 2 channels at a time.
When I start to add up what it is: (correct me if I’m wrong) stereo mic preamps, stereo line preamps, compressor, EQ, 2mix, chaining preamps into each other, now stereo field control, inserts, and now can swap mojo cards? … it’s truly insanely excellent value! I’m know for sure I could live with only that and 2 mics, a little bit of outboard to patch in and I’d be ok. And possibly the outboard wouldn’t even be needed.
I know for sure that Neve into another topology like API or SSL = sonic heaven! Now it comes with SSL mojo so there you go. No need for $500-$1000+ for a lunchbox and wiring patchbays, etc,
I think he’s just excited to get people to take a look at the value, of which it really is great.

Dr. Bill invented to master bus processing concept with the silver bullet.. I'm not too sure about that but IME he's been a super friendly, extremely helpful standup dude. I trust his ears, skill and advice.. Although I've just had the stark realisation that we originally crossed paths via various forums in 2009? Yeesh.. Time fly's huh?

I have an API 8200a that some strange nostalgia won't let me sell. I also have a Silver Bullet. The SB has way more sonic bang for the buck and when I did want to try summing again I added one of those DIYRE SB2's and had twice the channels, more fun and an easier recall as there was no twiddling tiny little knobs to set level. But mostly (99.9% of the time) I don't even bother summing and just run the SB on the masterbus. The API is great tho for parallel chains.

Dr. Bill invented to master bus processing concept with the silver bullet, so I feel like he gets a pass!. Haha! Thanks guys. I don't know if I invented master bus processing OR if I deserve a pass, but when I was putting CAPI vp26's and AML (1073's) mic pre's on my mix bus over 15 years ago and talking on the forums about it, it really was a novel concept that people couldn't quite wrap their minds around. I mean....mic pre on the mix buss?? Come on..... That evolved into me wanting something more dedicated to the task with an elegant work flow, and when we showed the first SB prototypes at AES in LA, no one had a clue what it was or what to call it. Including us I think....heh heh. Well, kinda... We ended up calling it a 2 channel console, which is essentially what it does - emulate a console. A and N (and now S) because....well, that's what my mentor Ronnie Capone (Stax) told me to use. ( Look up his discography. ). So after summing boxes and small console didn't work for me (I had a 120 input automated console at the time), I met Brad and the Silver Bullet was born. I AM proud of it. Most who own one seem proud of it. I'll gladly put it up against any summing solution cause I've done the research and listening. It will at least stand up to the test. Might be better. Up to the user to decide that. Hey, I came on to this thread to give my opinion, and Jacob or John can tell me to beat it. One thing I normally say that I should have mentioned is that : I'M BIASED. Heh heh. sirthought - if I have offended you or overstepped, I'm truly sorry. Cheers, bp

We know there are other members here who certainly could talk about their solutions. Yup, and I wish they would more!!! Call me weird, but I FREAKING LOVE IT when manufacturers like Chris / Ward at Audioscape, Jeff at CAPI, Steve at Coil, Matt & Eric at Heiserman, Eric @ Locomotive, etc. (I know I'm missing a bunch), jump in and elaborate on their gear and especially why they are passionate about it. I wish they would even more - there's tons to learn, and not enough money or time to try everything!!!

You just don't find company reps jumping into conversation to hype their device. We know there are other members here who certainly could talk about their solutions. Not taking a side here at all. I see your point…but my big problem with GS was the deception. The shill reviews, the people you didn’t know were associated with a product. The deleting of competitors threads and responses in favor of advertisers…the censuring and banning of people that had different opinions from what was being pushed. I just feel like Drbill isn’t hiding anything and isn’t overtly pushing his box.

Here is a pretty recent comparison. I feel like his results match my experience, even though it’s not exact science, and the level matching is non existent on his channel. (To me it’s not a big deal to turn up or down the volume on whatever you are interested in to overcome any biases) To me I feel there are benefits to ITB in terms of extreme separation. That’s it’s strength. Other times it’s a weakness, which is most of the time for stuff I work on. I can hear a lot of mainstream stuff with the extreme separation of ITB, so it’s not gonna hold you back. It just isn’t going to get the summing sound. And really mixing on hardware and summing, that’s another level of production that is different again, and his results feel a lot like my experiments. But as you can hear, putting the huge price tag on any of this doesn’t come close to the difference in the end results. In the end, all styles can be fine depending on if you want that extreme separation of elements of ITB. If you constantly fight it like I do, well yeah I think something at minimum will help. I will get the link in a sec… I guess you have click play in YouTube. 🤷♂️. ok maybe this will work: Link to YouTube videoIt's interesting you should write this post about "extreme separation" because a lot of the time I'm reading people saying they bought a summing mixer for greater separation. And I'm always thinking - "hang on" .... there can be no greater separation than a digital stream - it's not even a signal path just a very fast stream of addresses coming off a digital storage device! Aren't they actually buying a summing mixer so they can have LESS separation as electronic physical channels have cross talk within a summing mixer. Some of this stuff still seems mis-understood or at least a bit mythical. It's counter intuitive or so it seems to me.

I agree with Dr Bill on this after getting a Silver Bullet when they first came out. Previous I had a Shadow Hills Equinox with 24 channels of Apogee D to As feeding it. At this point I am getting the texture and Dimension from the Bullet with a simple 2 channel analogue loop.

It's interesting you should write this post about "extreme separation" because a lot of the time I'm reading people saying they bought a summing mixer for greater separation. And I'm always thinking - "hang on" .... there can be no greater separation than a digital stream - it's not even a signal path just a very fast stream of addresses coming off a digital storage device! Yeah it’s really hard to describe what exactly is going on and why things are different! 99% of the time when I’m all ITB I’m listening through basic converters, either Focusrite or RME but mostly just the built in MacBook or PC converters. On the couch with headphones or patched to KEFs or NS10s in the living room. And what always happened for years; levels of every element were either too hot or not enough. Remix over and over again. Finally, after years of feeling depressed I realized it’s because those elements are just going to never glue up the way they do in dense electronic circuits. It was a pain for me to wire up the console for monitoring off the board again. - I was using it like an oversized tracking chain for years - but that’s when the glue came back. I could put things louder or softer and both options sounded equally like music. Everything sounded like music. But I knew from earlier experience nobody else is going to hear it that way, because their MacBooks and phones don’t have transformers and oversized power supply, but my listening chain does. And also I was listening through the 2bus summing amps. This time though I really spent 6 months deciding whether I was imagining things, because it’s so hard to explain a reason why it sounds so good. It just sounds good. I started bussing things out to faders, it’s like the 2bus is a canvas that you can paint into. I’m not able to get the extreme ITB separation if I use it. Things kind of gel as one. (There are new summing emulations I haven’t messed with, ie LUNA, not trying to give folks gas here lol) I can’t record back as magically as it sounds in real life. And that has always been part of the “is it worth the effort” equation? But I’ve found the real benefit of mixing into summing or really sweet sounding 2bus chain is: I stop messing with it! It sounds incredible right away, I enjoy it and move on with my life lol *ps.. I’ll use the board mostly like a silver bullet, or a few of them, ITB summing of instruments feeding analog channels that feed the 2mix. Just doing Master out to 2 channels gives the full canvas vibe as well though. I’ve also done every individual channel out, so it’s more like a summing mixer. There IS a little more separation and 3D vibe, really cool. But it’s kind of hard to detect, you’d have to know to listen for it because it still sounds like using the same ‘canvas’. A slight kind of layered feeling, worth it for me since I have the channels so might as well, but the main sound is in the 2 channels

The new Red Hot Chili Peppers single sounds In The Box to me, kind of small and generic sounding mix. The chorus of that song is pretty decent. The verses kind of a big whatever.

I think the misnomer about greater separation is the non linear effects of transformers and there effect on the perception of elements in the stereo field. Of course make up amplifiers contribute to this equation as well......

I'm all-in with hybrid summing because I like it. A lot. I went in the box in 2019 and after 18 months I realized that I wasn't enjoying myself nearly as much as when I was surrounded by racks of warm, softly glowing analog gear. I had stored it all away, but brought it back when it hit me that I love integrating the "old way" into my digital studio (however, there's no tape machines here, that's a bridge too far). Are my mixes better now that I can turn knobs? It's a great question. I am unable to judge my own work (of my own music) objectively. But my drummer, who is slowly becoming my assistant, has a great ear, and thinks the latest mixes of our material have more clarity and balance compared to prior mixes. Plus, we are having FUN doing it. We are now recording friends, which I can objectively judge, and I hear an improvement. But it might be that I'm simply a better mixer than I was two years ago. I hope so, but it's hard to say.
Technically speaking, I am using an SSL Sigma, and am expanding to a second unit as soon as I can collect the final piece, an NTP DAD 256 Core so I can go full Dante using Pro Tools Ultimate.
In the end, I suggest that you try it all out. Find a used summing box and/or 2-bus box such as a Silver Bullet and give it a shot. One or both approaches might not be for you. But if it is- look out, your wallet will be constantly depleted!
Of course, the obvious path is to do outboard summing AND 2-bus processing. Have fun, and enjoy the ride while figuring it all out.

That's a good one, "Fun." I hate using rack gear, it's negative fun for me. That's the predominant reason I keep using plugins.

Of course make up amplifiers contribute to this equation as well...... The SSL Big Six doesn't have any transformers and it changes the sound quite a fair bit. Everything comes across a bit more punchy, wide and refined, it's not super subtle either (as in questioning whether or not it's making any difference). Great desk if you can put up with its limitations plus it's cheap.. I can get the same if not a far more dramatic presentation from my two bus equipment though so it went*. *The third time around..
