I spent some time the last couple days at online auctions. I picked up 3 items of note: DigiDesign 002 Rack, Line 6 M13 Multi-Stomp Box, Dell All-In-One PC..
My main concern about making a mistake was the DigiDesign 002 Rack. I was able to download old Drivers for the iMac and Windows PC from Avid, but are there any special considerations I should consider. I do have Firewire ports on both 'puters. I just wanted to play around with diff stuff and won't be relying on any particular equipment. I don't have (or even want) Pro Tools. Main DAW is Reaper with access to a couple other less used softwares.
Are there any other "heads-up" I need to consider?

I mean..it sounds awful. And any budget interface these days will probably sound much better and work better with most things.
But if you can get it to work with whatever DAW you're using, send it.

Doh, been rummaging around the nets for info and found any DAW would work fine. When I saw the 002, first thing I thought was it could be modded. BLA comes to mind... So, 4 more Preamp colors and alternate routing should be a win if it even works. It doesn't come with a power cord. It looks like it takes a regular IEC Computer PSU cord. I hope it's not a power brick.. can anyone confirm that?

Blackdawg, I was typing when you posted.. Yeah, I know it's not top of the line these days, but maybe I can use it to run something from one computer to the console on another computer. If it's a weak link, then it's mod time.

What would make you pick up an outdated interface that is designed for a specific DAW you don't use?

Whatever you do, don't pay someone to mod it!
People trying to flog off 002 for $50-100 in my area. I don't think anyone buys them.
Yes they are just a common IEC jug cord.

Well, it will never be the center-piece of anything here, although I am little surprised I picked it up seeing how I dislike Avid's business model, but I don't believe it can't be usefully upgraded far cheaper than springing for a more modern interface. I mean were talking 4 preamps here, not the mother load. I've got plenty of other options anyway. Like I initially said; it's something to mess around with for minor duties. lol, nobody would ever know I used for anything anyway unless I mentioned it. Use it on Acoustic Guitar?.. not gonna happen unless it proved itself after upgrading.. I knew out of the gate it would need looking in to and that was my initial thought.

Nah, no need to let some yocal have a go at soldering around on it.. They're cheap for sure, so not much concern about experimenting with it or gutting it for the case

If it's a weak link, then it's mod time. The amount you'd spend to have bla mod it you could just get a better interface in general that's still currently supported and would still sound better. I'd eat the mistake. And move on. I have an 003 for a long time. It was a nice control surface. But man it sounded terrible. I don't think it'll be worth your time and money to mod it and use it. Eventually the drivers will break and you'll be screwed anyways.

Whatever the cost would be to mod it would likely cost more than a brand new interface that would perform and sound much better.
I mean, a MOTU M4 is pretty damn basic, but sounds great and costs $270. It has some of the nicer DAC chips for mixing on.
An Audient EVO 8 is $200. Four great preamps. Good conversion. Very portable.
Not that there was nothing positive about the 002 Rack, but given its drawbacks...bad preamps and weak converters...I don't know why you'd want to make it work.

Hopefully you can't get a more definitive answer than this... Being Black Lion Audio, I actually suggest NOT modding it. Yes, we still firmly believe this specific mod sounds better than most available interfaces today BUT there is a big BUT here. We are in the process of phasing out these mods and generally mod them now with a warning and a disclaimer. They are borderline unfixable at this point. The pots and the jacks on the front panel were custom made for digidesign since they were ordering hundreds of thousands if not millions at the time for these units. There is absolutely no replacement for these pots as they were custom made at the time for exactly this application. These have been going bad progressively more often over the years and there is no replacement for them. Once they start going bad the unit starts running into all types of noise problems. Our solution for the last few years has been to buy every 002 and 003 we can (theyre worth almost nothing these days) and bone the front panels from them. Problem is, at this point pretty much every single 002 or 003 that we find for parts are just as bad as the unit sent in for repair itself. This leads to a situation where you could get it modded today, have a custom made and not available pots start going bad 1 week later and honestly theres not much anyone can do about it.
All in all, We dont suggest modding 002s, 003s or the older Motu units anymore. All three were bread and butter mods for us for a decade and half and now every time one comes back it's a nightmare for everyone involved. Not to mention that we consider the rack mount Apollo x's with our clock in it the first real interface that we have modded in YEARS that we would personally chose over a a fully modded 002 or 003.

I still run Win XP, 7 & High Sierra (hate Win 10 & 11), so I don't think drivers will be an issue. Looks like this will be a project to experiment with personal mods as long as the components hold up. Then for parts when it starts dying off.. I'm always needing a little rectangular piece of metal and screws for a project.

Or if the converters were acceptable for misc routing of non-prominent tracks.

Great info!.. I remember the mods that were done back in the day and that was the first thing I thought of when I saw it, since it was so cheap up front. At this point, I think I'll just experiment on mods in house. Shucks, I don't even know if it works since I haven't received it yet.
