I got a reset from UA on my NEVE and API summing for Luna.
I spent yesterday doing some testing..I am still struggling with getting around in LUNA.... admittedly I probably only had less than 2 hours with it before yesterday.
It took me a while to get an apples to apples sort of test going against Logic.. .because of the gain staging requirements of the Summing in Luna.... I track with such conservative levels
that it wouldn't even register on the summing meters in luna. But I worked out a way to make a fair assessment.
The summing sounds really really good.
So does the tape.
In fact with the tape on the channels (A800) and main outputs (ATR102) and either the NEVE or API summing, and nothing else I had a pretty good sounding mix.
Now, admittedly I spent a lot of care when tracking the acoustic guitars and bass, to get a really good sound at tracking stage. The drums are superior drums, and the electric guitars
are all Amplitube... so most of the work is done for me... 8)
But I was really impressed with the sound of the summing.... and tape.... it was also cool that it was incorporated so easily.
I decided to track the vocal again and see how LUNA went as a tracking set up... that's where I sort of hit a wall, and its all about not knowing the DAW well enough...
All the gain staging was wrong trying to create a headphone mix on par, with what I have built up over time using the CONSOLE for UAD, with logic.
Just trying to work out how to get a good level, comfort verb, not knowing key commands to start recording etc just made me frustrated...(I know that would pass with time)
The look of LUNA was freaking me out.. stupid things like, not enough colour options for tracks, not being able to split my one screen into tracks and mixer views at the same time (which pro tools guys wouldn't even think of...but coming from a over a decade with logic now its amazing how jarring it is)
I wish I could get the summing in logic.
Also not being able to incorporate the Bricasti via hardware IO is an issue....
Now most if not all of this will be fixed in time (as luna gets more functionality)...and with more familiarity... but I don't know, I feel like I am whinging....8).. wah wah first world problem. 8)
But as I was using LUNA, I wondered if their long term plan includes a dedicated control surface... and I imagined something like a control surface like we have today, but with a iPad like touch screen, that showed a picture of the plugin you called up, and endless rotary knobs below the screen that controlled the plug in... not unlike my AW4416 from Yamaha 20 plus years ago.
anyways.... will have a bit more of a play today...
But the take away was... the summing sounds really great.
I want that sound, in a plugin I can run in Logic.
cheers
