I believe the KM84 can do just about anything. Here's a sample of a U87 compared to a KM84 on vocals.

Cool test and great singing!
The km84 definitely hold its own. Sounds a bit more vintage!? Suited the song very well. I own a couple of km84s and recently found a nice pair of km86 so I have planned on doing a test with the km86. One episode with full demo song and then a comparison to the km84.

I don’t sing but I do know different singers often = different mics.

In line with this, the KM84 is more soothing. I preferred it over the AI here. For a Rocker though on a (terrific) mellow voice like Dan's... U87ai to be more up front IMHO. Thanks Dan! Chris

I’ve used the 84 when a vocal needs more articulation than a ldc provides. There’s a lot good about that mic.

Dan, is there a more affordable SDC alternative other than a vintage 84...
That you also like? Thanks, Chris

Josh Groban used a KM84 for his first 2 albums and Christmas Album. It’s really nice here.

There are some videos floating around with people recording whole albums with just one MKH mic. Honestly I would choose an MKH 40 over a KM84

bluegrassdan Really cool video and great performance as usual. I definitely prefer the 87 here, but the 84 is no slouch and holds up quite nicely. If I didn't get to hear the 87, I'd have no issue using the take on the 84.

They both sound really good.
I think the 84 might sound a little...is tighter the right word? They have pretty similar tone on my speakers, but the 87 sounds more open.
I could see why you'd want to use it for something needing the transients to show more.

SDC sound more accurate to my ears.
LDC are a bit more “Rose tinted”
I definitely sound too “detailed” on an SDC.

We have a pair of Sennheiser 8040s. They are honest, I suppose, but very stark.

off topic but Senn for the win here on utmost clarity and depth of image, hear the quietest clearly against the loudest. They frequently get too stark on drum OH or room, but fantastic on most acoustic instruments. I'd never put one on an electric guitar amp, it'll sound just like that crap actually sounds! That 184 sounds like an AM radio after hearing the 8040. I do prefer the MKH20/30/40 for the EQ and pad switches lacking on the 8000 series. I understand the 8000 also has more color, with the slight bass/treble boost lacking in the earlier. Desert island, I'd ask for 2 and it's prob MKH 20 and a Samar MF-65. 3, I'd add an MKH 30. I had a remote VO capture gig for awhile, frequently an Oktava MK-012 cardioid was the best sounding thing.

I truly preferred the KM84 in this shootout as well. It is kinder on the high mid and has a tighter low-end, more suited to a tenor or tenny-bear type voice.
Say, although completely different microphones, do you think you might do a comparison of your amazing 1960 Telefunken U47 against a KM84. please?

Bleed sounds way better on an 84! SDCs are god's gift to recordists. Especially the modernized ones that can take RIDICULOUS level.

84 sounds a bit pinched in the high mids to me. The 87 is ok but sounds kinda...i dunno...flat. Though I will say that the 87 on his voice doesn't sound like what i associate with 87s (esp the AI versions). It worked well for him; better than most of the singers I've tried an 87 on.
Anywho, I'd love to hear this guy on a proper 67, or maybe a 269. I reckon that'd flatter his already-great voice.
I also suspect for a slightly more modern sound, the Josephson 715 would kick major ass on him.

Meanwhile the Shures with the pad are dirt cheap and could handle some guitarists cab with enough gain to start World War III AT makes large diaphragm electret side address condensers. There’s nothing else like them.
