I didn't know this existed.
Anyone using one?
It seems to have the right amount of ins and outs, that I would need....in Oz its a 1/4 of the price of my Apollo X8.
Big question, does it do away with that awful MOTU MIXER?
it says in the promo about Cue Mix 5 or 6 or something and I saw some screen shots of what looks like a simpler user interface.
Is it the same level of audio quality as my old MOTU 16A?
cheers
Wiz

I don’t own one (yet), but Guitar does. I’ve corresponded with him about it and he’s been very positive about it. Hopefully, he will share his experiences.

The Ultralite mk 5 is made in China and went back to using third party USB drivers. Caveat emptor.

Listen to the other Dan, hey that's me. I own one, for a while now.
The mixer is simple and easy. Sound quality is spectacular, mic pres, ins and outs, headphones, all top class. Tons of IO like you said.
Windows drivers are unreliable. Maybe on a Mac you're ok. Maybe on some specific computers people seem to have no issues. Guess I'm not one of the lucky ones.
But I have issues with both my Windows computers, so I use an RME Digiface USB as the interface, and run the Ultralite MK5 in via ADAT. Along with my other ADAT interfaces (Clarett OctoPre, Tascam Series 8p Dyna). It's a cool little rig.
If they could somehow nail the drivers in an update, this would be perfect.
Meanwhile I'm getting RME latency performance and MOTU next-generation sound quality (look up the ASR test reviews, or Julian Krause, it's special.), so not a bad place to end up!

Damn that's unfortunate that they never fixed the Windows USB driver. MOTU has always been a Mac focused company but the AVB drivers ran fine but with higher latency on Windows because of a safety buffer. They run spectacularly well on Mac. Apogee, formerly Mac exclusive for years, runs better on Windows over USB than MOTU now for me. also how's the Tascam? Does it have any of that lofi classic Tascam pre sound left?

I heard somewhere that Motu mk5 has better AD / DA chips than RME UCX II. But at the same time to my surprise, the RME UCX II has slightly worse AD / DA chips than the Babyface Pro FS (Babyface Pro Fs uses AD AK5574 which have better specs than UCX 2 AD AK5558).

is this the same qualiity conversion as the 8a & 16a? and can it interface with those? I believe, like Shadow said, it tests better (sounds better) than those. You can find japanese reviews to verify this. But, IMO, I'd wager they're all 'great' if you know what I mean. the 8A, 16A are part of the AVB "Pro" line. The Ultralite has none of that. That being, the complex mixer/matrix thing, the AVB connections. It's simpler, more streamlined. More in the direction of a Clarett or something with the software, but still more power than Focusrite software, it actually has compression, EQ, reverb, and so on. That's good and/or bad depending on your goals. For me, it's fine. Although I would love a 16A or something like that down the road. I think the MOTU conversion (ADC, DAC) is some of my favorite, so I'd like one of the big kahunas. I love my M4, I love my ULMK5, I love my ESS Topping DX7 (similar enough), so I'm pretty sure a 16A would just be a whole lotta love.

I was a big fan of the Tascam UH-7000, I still have two of those here. So I got the Series 8P Dyna because it has the same "high end" HDIA mic pres, but 8 of them. It does sound a tiny bit different, but it's one of those things I haven't done A/B shootouts with the two of them. The 8p: I just use it, I've never really critically listened to it. They do have a "sound." Might be that thing you're talking about. I use the 8P Dyna for drum inputs these days. Although I'm recording drums less and less since I got Superior Drummer 3 and my Yamaha DTX e-drums. The compressors on every channel, one knob compressors, I've just never used them. They seem OK at best, it's not an SSL compressor or something. Just this kind of soft sounding slowish kind of thing, I should listen to those again sometime. Maybe they'd be good on vocals or acoustic guitar/bass or something. But I record those instruments through the Ultralite with transformer mic pres in front.

Can you daisy chain them or is that why your intwrested in the 16a? Also can you bypass the pres?

I use ADAT. my main digital interface is an RME Digiface USB which can do 32x34 IxO via ADAT over USB 2.0, wonderful.

On the product page, under rack mount options, they show a rack for placing two side by side. Maybe it's just ADAT. motu.com/en-us/products/gen5/ultralite-mk5/
