If you’re doing it all by yourself, then by all means, do what’s best for you! I don’t think anyone can argue with that. I used to own a commercial studio and I've mastered or mixed (or both) tracks for others.
I gotta agree with copperx here, conversations like these are a bit "brick wall". It wasn't until I started visiting the purple site a decade+ ago that I found all of these arbitrary restrictions. Out working with engineers in the field they'll do whatever it takes for a track to sound good / translate, like cut don't boost? Yeah, tell that to the grammy winners cranking the mids out by 7dB (relative of course).
I've seen producers do all sorts of whacky crap and solo'd it would sound bleh but in a mix, awesome. My point is you don't have to agree but that doesn't mean I'm wrong, neither does it mean you're wrong either. Again, it's a methodology and there's a logical reason to do it in certain circumstances but many have managed just fine without. For me its become a bit of a habbit..
