I have a Hairball REV A 500 unit. It sounds great but I find that adjusting the input to get the right amount of compression to be a little fiddly compared to a rack unit. In case it is not fitted in your unit, the build manual says: "R-OPT is not supplied with the kit. It's an optional mod to tame the input if you feel you need it. You can use any 100Ω resistor 1/8W or higher that will fit.[…]"

That Serpent Splice seems to be the clear winner in terms of recommendations. I have a hard time spending that much for it when I can grab a rack unit Audio Scape for less or a Distressor for only a touch more though. Hmm. Street price is $1349, or roughly two Audioscape 76s. (yes, I'm biased, no secrets here!) Yeah, but I can fit 11 Splices in less rack space than 2 1176's. Space is at a premium here....and REAL space is way more expensive than the gear to fill it. Just sayin'.

Curious why audioscape hasn’t gone after a 500 series 76!

But also availble now, no wait or effort to buy. and its 2 in one...really its like 4 different units since you can mix and match the input/output stages on the splice. And it won't take up 4u of space. And the splice has built in parallel(huge) And a HPF side chain I love my 76A. But its not really "cheaper" either. Or even the same feature wise. Yes, the A/D "splicing", the parallel blend, and the HP side chain are all game changing features. Plus they sound killer. I'd still like an AS A sometime though....

Vincent, you have to look at it this way, the Serpent is really 2 different tonal animals in one, you just can’t use them at the same time. So you need to be able to justify the cost and rack space vs versitlity and being able to use 2 ch of compression at a time vs 1. The smart move would be to invest some time figuring out what version of the 1176 you really want not on the net but by using.

I do like the idea of not having 4U taken up by a pair of 1176s and just a couple of slots in my 500 series rack. I know that with plugins I tend to reach for the black face 1176s or the Distressor. I know that's not a real judgment, but it is something.

Wes Mimas are killer especially with the automation for a post compressed signal.

Bloody heretic LOL Hahaaaa!!! I've got 6 or 7 AS pieces right now, and in reality, had AS been on the scene 5-7 years earlier, I'd have probably another 10-12 or so. I'm just pretty much already tapped out rack space and money wise and I've got most areas already covered - but there are a few pieces that I'd love to see in my racks..... . BTW, I'm pretty heavily 500 committed with 70+ pieces, and 8 500 racks. I love em - the format is killer IMO. Only downside is that the racks sometimes get VERY hot depending on what you've got in em. BTW, just FYI - I've got roughly 230 rack spaces - FILLED - in 24-25 racks. I'm kinda full up... A new piece that's 3RU or even 2RU has to be a serious contender, cause it's going to mean ousting something I really love....

I have to rehome about 10 'units'. I have no room left. 500 series? Yes., it has its challenges. Underpowered at times, overheated at times, tiny buttons and squinting at other times.

Played with a BAE 500c for a while and or was really excellent on bass, and pretty handy following an opto for vocal tracking. I’d be happy with a pair of those.

I'm looking into this right now in the spirit of keeping my rig compact.
It's been some time.. Any more experiences?

Serpent Splice 500 still rules the roost. Sounds amazing and its hard to argue with 4 different versions of 1176 in one slot.

Yeah. Good suggestions here. I haven’t used the transformer 526, but it might get dirty like an 1176 now. jsteigerThe dirt is in the FET reaction to compression, the transformer won’t make that particular dirt. Yep, a long time ago I paid a pretty penny for the old school high hfe fet’s for my diy builds, gottem from none other than the man who has the last known quantities of them, Mike at serpent(not for sale he did me a favor 10 years ago) he uses/used them in his splice’s, imo it’s as close as a clone gets with extra bells and whistles

I built a Hairball FET500 Rev D last year. It was an inexpensive way to get the 1176 flavor, and I've enjoyed using it.

When I got my first Splice, I brought it to the studio I worked at where we had a Rev D UREI. Both my colleague and I shot the two out on multiple sources and preferred the Serpent on almost everything, especially drums and vocals. The UREI was a touch smoother on bass, but it was negligible and that was keeping the Serpent in black mode. Put the Serpent into REV A IN and REV D out and I challenge anyone to find a better rock bass compressor.
