ST’s want $199 for Decap., $200 to get everything I don’t have : hmmm:)
I’m thinking about selling my UA plugs and octo, find myself using fewer and fewer UA plugs. Not so worried about its sub plan, getting uadX plugs (free), goes with your plugs if you sell them, ironically, making them,I think, more desirable .

I agree with everything said. Decapitator is great. I do love FF Saturn 2 on vocals though. I sometimes use burier by KIT, and its FREE. kitplugins.com/pages/burier-free

I've tried out loads, and top if my list for quality is Fuse Audio Labs' VPRE-2C for its versatility (low/high/flat grit) yet just getting the job done quickly. Others Fuse Audio Labs products I reach for include VPRE-31A, and for more extreme treatments VPRE-562A and TCS-68, Elysia's Phil's Cascade. Kit Plugins' Burier mentioned by ml above is also great for being able to quicker move from subtle grit to full-on distortion, when you're not sure what will best suit a sound. If I've got time to fiddle about more, I also like Black Box Analog (the original non mid-side release), even on the 2-buss, although I find it overkill for track duties. New discoveries with promise that I'm still investigating include Kiive Audio's Distinct! (a variety of more extreme treatments based on the Overstayer modular channel, with built-in compression) and Tone Projects' Kelvin (which is incredibly versatile and sounds great to my ears!) I do own Soundtoys' Decapitator, but although it can do more subtle preamp stuff (I've created some of my own presets for this) the factory presets are almost universally 'over the top' and less useful for my purposes, so I tend to find myself reaching for other plug-ins unless I really want to destroy a sound Martin

The solid state ones are more obvious but still great. The 2C can be cleaner than the more exciting Neold V76. People forget that good tube pres are pretty clean for most of the gain range. Of course the good tubes are gone now. So is the Tupe 12ax7 not pushed on HQ. Tupe will just bring anything not Alder Bridge or an M1 to its knees when stacked up on a track with a lot of other killer modern non-linear plugs the most woody subtle 60s sounding “virtual pre” I’ve heard though is the PSP Infinistrip 60s pre. Fat and woody

Also U-he Satin. By far the most subtle tape plug. Choose a studer preset. Gainstage it correctly on the vu meter with the input knobs. Slightly better. Stack it up on everything with a high shelf feeding it if your computer is powerful enough even though the plug’s almost 10 years old and the mix just sounds huge.
If you don’t want to be careful and want big distorted tape sound on 2 bus, Fuse Flywheel, UAD Ampex 102, and Waves Kramer Tape are pretty cool on mix bus.

And The real dirty secret is there is no secret weapon distortion plug and you need a ton the stuff mentioned here in this thread. Because on any individual song, 9/10s of these won’t work no matter how clean they are in plug-in doctor or how big they sound on an individual drum or guitar or voice. and there will always be ONE that just sounds amazing. Even for same room, same mics, same gear, same day, same session but different song.
One track, Fuse TCS-68 did it where the pultec plugs and E27 and Slick EQ to boost failed. The mid eq band and shelves and pre amp distortion were just perfect. Next track, TCS-68 sounded awful and the PSP E27 sounded amazing and a low shelf + a 200 hz boost, 550/680 cut, + high shelf and the drive turned down to peak at -10 dbfs just sounded huge on the room.
You still need ears.

I'm still fond of the Digidesign Avid Eleven amp models for some overdrive on bass.
And the AIR Soundfield distortion plug is awesome on crotch mic.

Although the honeymoon has passed and everyday life steps in, I am still in love with "KITBB N105" for distortion when driving mic gain. Many other good tips on the thread, must check out

Soundtoys Juice all the way.
Hahahaha - man, how long ago was it that ST pushed that thing and it literally never appeared! IIRC, it even won some award at a tradeshow or something.

Now, on a more serious note, I do like Tone Projects Kelvin - that’s a good plugin IMO.
Also Saturn2, KIT BB N105, Kush Omega 458a, and even the venerable Sonnox Inflator sometimes. Acustica Cream has some really nice saturation, as does Magenta.

Having fun with kit burier, it punches the ticket just fine: simple but useful features and very good sound with adjustable drive: nice !

Yep, that's what I like about it too - if you're not sure what treatment to give a sound, Burier lets you dial in anything from subtle preamp vibes to totally buried in distortion by turning a single control, all with reasonably well-matched gain compensation for consistent volume

Anybody using the UAD Culture Vulture? I use most of the plugins mentioned in this thread and don’t feel like I need another, but this is on sale right now.
