Ahem...I believe I started a thread on TSTSNBM. (The site that shall not be mentioned)
Seriously, though. That could be an awesome box.

I wish they would just do there own interface. I need at least 24 channels of good DA. I haven't found anything I like better then my modded 002 yet. It smokes most of the other stuff I have used.

if i could get 16 more channels the same as this BLA 002, i'd never look back, unfortunately, i'm locked out at 16 total with a sonically inferior expansion box at 48k, and i hear a pretty big diff between the 48 and 96k src, especially on acoustic tracks. I'm real curios about the apollo mod??

From my research, the FM 192 are arguably the best converters and clock made. More importantly, its 8 in and 16 out. I'll warn you though, it's not cheap. If you run it with the hand made silver cabling by Requisite Audio... nothing will touch it. Cables alone cost $5000. The only people using the FM 192 and cables are Mutt Lang and unfortunately the late Mike Shipley. Mutt has 20 FM 192's. The FM 192 is only manf by Blacklion. It is the brainchild of Danny Mckinney (Requisite Audio), Mike Shipley and Mutt Lang. I got my unit used. It was shipped by Prince's engineer and Maserati had it before that. He did the last Beyonce album on it. Don't forget, Protools HD has the same front end as the Digi 003. Comparing this setup to pro tools HD is like comparing PT HD/Symphony to the MBox. I had a client check their mix on my system the other day. The scratching from finger picking on acoustic was unbearable. The client said, they couldn't even hear it while mixing at one of Nashville's top studios. I could never go back to another system. Spoiled for good. .

I haven't mentioned this much, but when i had the sig mod done to my 002, I was lucky enough to get the FM clock put in! When i got the thing back, it was absolutely mind bending how good it sounded to me, the dynamic range, width and imaging was unbelievable! The best part is, when you stack tracks, it keeps all those dynamics in tact, this is where ive seen other rigs fall off the hardest, when the tracks add up, the conversion seems to fall down IME. Now, if i could just get 3 of these units to link together at 24/96k, i'd skip to my loo all the way home! 8)

I will just say I'm a skeptic.
I unfortunately made a remark regarding the use of silver cable to shipshape on the old site not having the slightest clue who the person was behind the user name derailing an entire thread. My opinion remains the same regarding that stuff but feel remorse regardless.
It's my opinion that converters make a very marginal difference.

bla is replacing analog parts after the pres and decoupling the converters , they aren't upgrading the converters or modding the clock
it will be good to hear clips of same source into stock and modded apollo.

My opinion remains the same regarding that stuff but feel remorse regardless. It's my opinion that converters make a very marginal difference. I guess I believe enough to risk the $795 but I remain cautiously optimistic. They are replacing op-amps and capacitors which, in theory, should improve the analog signal paths. I have the stock Apollo and like it just fine, however, I need the additional DSP and I/Os so I bought a used one at a good price. Instead of having the seller ship it to me it went straight to BLA, who tested the unit and then mod'd it for me. All in all I paid a couple hundred buck more than a brand new one would cost me. With that said, pros that I trust that have experience with BLA's work, trust BLA. Anyway, Ill soon find out if I wasted my time and money.

whats the downside ?
the way i see it, its all upside for you, you got the i/o you wanted, 4 more on board clean pres, 2 more headphones out, 8 more converters(voiced now differently), but this lets you select different signal paths depending on complimentarity with the source and everything running in console with 4 more sharc chips and 8 vi's!
boy that sounds like a problem!

If they're adding pres and additional features than for sure it's a good mod. I do think getting caught up in component upgrade is a road to nowhere. Even my alpha link could be modded by BLA but will I hear a difference? I don't think I would and its just going to empty my wallet for something that doesn't need fixing. Just my opinion, the Apollo is a new box, made by a good company. If it crossed my mind to mod a piece I'd probably return and get one that works for me better.
