I have a very small room, 11’ x 13’8 with 7’9” ceilings
I have lots of bass traps and broad band absorption. It’s a mix of DIY and real traps. I’m covered on that front. In general my room is pretty dead sounding and could use some more “space” or “air” or “livelyness” to make it more natural sounding.
I’m wondering what to do on my back wall. It’s only 7’6” from my listening position. I want to put some diffusers on the wall but I’m concerned about comb filtering. I’ve read that you want a minimum distance from a diffuser, based on its freq range, or else you run into the above mentioned issue. But, I have to practice experience with that. What complicates it is that I regularly track vocals and acoustic guitar I’m my room as well, so that would decrease the distance from the diffusers.
I’m I spending too much time on the hypothetical here? Is it a real issue I need to worry about? I already had to add some spot panels on my low ceiling to get rid is some comb filtering it was causing.

same situation as my studio. mine is a bit bigger though. check out my thread here about improving mixing monitor sound. you can see pics of my room and treatment. i did 2 diy diffusors on my back wall. they are like 3m from my mixing pisition. i record all sorts of instruments (even drums) just 1m in front of the diffusor. i have to say they don‘t cause me problems but i can‘t „hear“ a larger natural ambient either. my room is pretty dead which i think is always the way to go with small rooms. you can always add good reverb sound with plugins (i am currently using ik multimedie sun set studio reverb a lot), but you cannot get rid of a bad room sound. so, all in all, the diy diffusor do no harm but don‘t change much.

Thanks, that was the type of feedback i was hoping for. You have a very nice looking and functional room btw. It looks very similar to my own in size and setup. I totally get that adding a few diffusers won’t transform my room but I’m trying to squeeze every last drop out of the space without making it any more “dead” sounding. As long as the diffusers do no harm I’ll be happy. I’m probably overthinking the whole thing.

I spent a week building some real nice diffusors for my space. Heavy. Intricate and spec'd for the room. Looked really nice.
I didn't hear much difference at all.
I ended up removing them for a little more space.
