Since I sent the SSL back I seem to have a lack of pre-amps, problem is I'm eating into my music / recording time at this stage as the setup's taken a lot longer than expected.
I need to order a few ASAP but stock is really limited. A couple will do, I guess they don't have to be the same? So, this is what I've come across thus far.
Stam SA-T69
Chander Germanium (500 Series)
Focusrite ISA 2 (2 channel)
Cranborne Camden EC2
Neve Portico (500 series / 2 available)
There's plenty of Warm / GAP stuff about as well. If you needed to choose two what would you run with?
Important note: I only have 2 500 series slots left and I was looking to buy a stereo comp however I have 1U's of 19" rack space left as well due to some re-shuffling, I can either get two 500's or a 1U but one of each wouldn't be ideal really.

There were used Daking here a few months ago: it’s a trident clone.

I'm a fan of the EC2. Cranborne gear works really well, and they're super nice folks to deal with. I find that their stuff continues to expand its usefulness as you buy more of it. I've got a 500ADAT, the EC2, and a couple of CAST boxes. The bonus headphone amp and ethernet/CAST connectivity are GREAT especially if you make your own cables. I honestly haven't used the Cream/Thump very much, but when you need just a pinch on something, it's great to have it. I'm hoping they come out with some new products soon cuz I really dig their approach.

I like my Cranborne Camden, it's pretty nice. Has a "big" sound even though it's squeaky clean.
I can't imagine you'd go wrong with an RND or Focusrite, either.

The little SSL desk? Why..? Couple months back I picked up an Iron Age QP5. Haven't used on a ton of things but its sweet. Could easily see having a dozen & wanting for nothing else. Rich tone. Versatile gain staging. Dead nuts quiet too. |

Phoenix DRS will go through opamps. They’re potted, and propriety so you have to get them from the company when they go down. Nice sounding pre, but none of our other stuff has needed any maintenance in the time it’s needed 3 opamps. I am en route to track vox with one right now. |

The little SSL desk? Why..? Couple months back I picked up an Iron Age QP5. Haven't used on a ton of things but its sweet. Could easily see having a dozen & wanting for nothing else. Rich tone. Versatile gain staging. Dead nuts quiet too. Well I wasn't keen on the conversion, high latency, channel comp, EQ (which sounded good but was limited) and the faders were rather inaccurate. That being said the pre-amps and VCA comp were good and for the cost of a decent pre plus the SSL 500 series G-Bus comp I'm after I could probably save a chunk of change TBH. Not sure about it, I suppose I could get another one and use it as a summing mixer the problem is there's no outputs for any of the channels, I'm not sure how I'd use it with external converters as it doesn't have enough I/O. Anyway I doubt I'll get anything shipped over from the other side of the world in the space of 2 - 3 weeks never mind by Saturday so the LTL and Iron Age stuff is out. This renovation project took wayyy too long and the hectic schedule resumes shortly so I need something soon(ish).. |

Agreed, what I'm really after is an API Channel Strip which can be re-used at the flick of a switch as a mono comp and an SSL G Bus 500 series. Bit out of my budget for the moment unfortunately.. I have a spare 6176 I suppose I could use, never really got along with the pre-amp in that but it would be fine for bass I guess. Then I'd only need one pre-amp. I have to say this whole hybrid setup has been nothing but a PITA thus far, I might start a new topic on it. |

Personally, especially working in a hybrid set up, I'd want something with EQ, so I could commit it to tape, or run tracks through it will mixing. Iron Age H9 would be my first choice for 500 series. There aren't that many single space 2 channel mic preamp/EQ's out there, but the Aurora Audio GTQ2 is an impressive piece of kit, and I love my AEA RPQ2. Not impressed with the Neve 1073DPX I've used, sounds pretty thin and often sort of "clipped" for lack of a better term. It doesn't have any of the saturation you expect from a 1073.

If you want 4 (or just 2) pres in 1ru Teegarden's are great and in stock. I vote Chromas as well but I think they take longer at the moment.

I have settled on ob while tracking, mixing itb but I use my ssl clone comp on 2 buss also.

The main issue is since dumping the SSL I've lost 4 comps, 4 pre's, a bus comp and several channels of EQ plus most importantly a tactile routing matrix. Yeah in a mixing scenario I'd use some plugs and the MOTU console but ultimately I'm losing focus at this stage as to what this "hybrid" or Frankenstein setup is supposed to be achieving. It feels like a small mixture of uber random high end stuff that I've always wanted as opposed to a solid concrete workflow of something actually useful. A couple of pre's are a band aid just to get my studio moving so I can DO SOMETHING, like anything. However maybe I should take a step back and look at the bigger picture.. Then again I'm not really sure at this stage what I need or where I'm going with this, with the SSL I had everything planned out to the most minute detail. |

Well the truth is, most of us don’t need a console anymore.
So, it comes down to preferences.
I had: not at same time:
2/4/8/16 channels of conversion,
console 1,
all 3 faderports,
a 16/4/2 delta ,
20 odd channels of pres,
18 channels of 4 band eq,
14 channels of compressors,
100 -200 plus plug ins
14 sharc chips
3 patchbays
100’s of cables
sold almost everything
just had a great time(2days) recording my new song 1 channel at a time,1 pre, mike and comp ( sa67, Daking, sa76adf), logic drummer.
Had a blast- super impressed with adf!
Mix doesn’t need a lot as captured sound at source and have warm ssl g comp on mix buss.
My point is, yes, buying gear is heaps of fun, but, how often will you really record more then 8 channels at same time and how much do you really need vs want the console/mixing desk, as we don’t really need them?
