Mine just arrived. Excited to hook it up and try it out! I'm really curious as to how this compares to the WT-72. The 86B-2 is on my shortlist for a nice two channel tube preamp. A pair of WT-72 are also on my shortlist, and would actually be a little cheaper than one 86B, but I do like the fact that the 86B offers the same amount of channels in half the space. Anyone compared both? I'm curious about the sound differences between the WT-72 and 86B-2.

I have had the wt-72 rev a, wt-72 rev b and now the wt-72 rev c. Also waiting for my 86-2b to arrive. My expectations are They should sound very different from each other. I have another ef86 style preamp and that sounds nothing like the wt-72. Its a a design mp1 19” rack version with the mamomoth mercury magnetics transformer. That sound is huge. But yes waiting for the 86b-2 to hit my shores downunder.

Is there an audible difference between the WT-72 revisions?

Honestly mine is still sitting in the box. With a death in the family in January draggin on with us being the executors. I havent really had the time to do much at all. This year has sort of been a write music producing wise. I did power it up. It did sound similar to my modded ampex 601preamp. Which i sold last year.

Any follow-up comments/opinion on the 86B? The Loco sale happening now is pretty killer. $1700 for this dually...damn! I have the 286a that was the prior unit by Locomotive and it is fantastic. The folks at Locomotive claim that the 86B is at least as good as their prior 286a. Not a clean pre (though there are degrees of it depending on how hard you drive it), but it can be very smooth and sweet.

For me its another pre and another option but not the first pre I reach for as I am partial to the Neve sound. Honestly I have not spent enough time with it to give a detailed answer. It can sound clean and has not so much colour but iof you want to drive it harder utilising the input /output knobs you can do that. It sounds like a some other EF86 style preamps I have owned. Think A designs MP1/MP2, AMpex 301 converted preamps, etc.
