UPDATE 2/4: Added files for the Warm 67 through both Coil and WT (files 10-15)I know the word "shootout" can be a sensitive one so I've updated the title to "Comparison". I'm really just doing an evaluation of the Coil CA-70S and the WT-72 for my own education, but wanted to share the files for those that are interested. This was using my REDD and Warm 67 mics. I picked a song that is pushing my range but would do a good job revealing the vocals. Feel free to let me know your thoughts between the two preamps if you wish. There are a lot more Coil clips due to its flexibility...more than you probably want to listen to, but far fewer than what can be achieved with the three controls. Legend/Setup: Coil (files 1-9) Input = 0, Low = -4, NF: -6 = fully counter-clockwise; -635 = one setting less than fully counter-clockwise; -9 = one quarter counter-clockwise All Coil recordings done at line-level with the exception of one labeled Mic WT-72 Line = Line Level In Mic = Mic In REDD Gain set at +20 as the majority was recorded with the preamps set to line-level LC = REDD set to Low Contour (did not do this with the WT-72, but may add it soon) Effects A smidgen of Seventh Heaven Large Hall with a bit of predelay (I left it pretty bare to keep the raw vocals more exposed) No compression Only EQ is a HPF at 85Hz with a 12dB/oct slope (Could have dropped this some, but this setting seemed to work consistently across all examples) Files Recorded 96/24 Dropbox: .wav, 48/24 www.dropbox.com/sh/bs6jk6hpnwxh0p7/AAAy4hF-zsLpjl9rIYcT44rTa?dl=0

Man that Coil sounds so good on your vocals.
So big and smooth.

First lovely vibrato, well done !
Both pres sound great: I thought the Coil a little richer and smoother, the WT more clear, so the Vox is a little more present in the mix, more on top, less within , in a good way.
So either work, depends on where you want the mix to end up ?
thx for posting.

The way the Coil brings out your chest really hits me much more than the WT capture on an emotional level, which I find enhances the nasal upper mids of the Redd too much for my taste.
With a low mid heavy darker mic, like a 67 my choice might be the opposite.
Which one do you like better with your Warm 67?

Of course the question is: Is it worth keeping the WT just for the Warm? Decisions, decisions.

Hey man, - nice comparison.
Every time I hear the Coil it sounds special. I want to get one just for that Negative Feedback control, it really seems to changes the timbre in cool ways.
I prefer both of the -9 tracks.... great combo with that mic.
The LC on the REDD is interesting, I think I might use that on a dreadnought acoustic or something but I like your vocal without it engaged.
Thanks for doing this

I really liked the -9 tracks with the Coil. I didn't dislike the WT though.

Damn, I had successfully quelled my Coil lust until I heard the 67 into CA-70. Teejay and Brice, thank you both for great samples.

So weird. For vocals I'll use the WT72's 8:1 over the Coil CA70's for vocals......

I would've expected the same as I always enjoy recording vocals through original v72's thus I'm fairly sure I'd feel the same about the WT-72. Based on internet lore and the way it prepped my expectations I was surprised at how much I loved the 67 to CA-70 in this example.

I've got both the CA70 and WT72, and yeah, the Coil is great also, but the WT72 is the first thing that comes to mind when I pull out a mic for vocals - U87, H47T, M269, Gefell's, InnerTube etc.. Even the SM7. But maybe the REDD is bright enough that it prefers the Coil... I haven't used one, but that's my experience with clips from the other Chandler mic - forget it's model number.

Curious to me in that a vocal 67 into a Gates SA-70 is kind of a mess; needs a 20 db input pad and then the level also trimmed back to the point you might as well use something else. Anyway that was a fail on the last Avett Bros record…..maybe Seth is insanely loud or something…..dynamic or ribbon? All day long…..
Similar gain total and structure, but higher max output RCA BA-2 works great for vocals with a 67 and a 20db input pad. Curious.

Yes the Redd is very very bright and detailed up top but not in a c12 or 251 kind of way, more in that extra airy C800g way.

I would like to hear anyone who may have heard a Coil 286 vs the Weight Tank.
The Coil 286's have NF, which would do a lot more variations in sound than a WT72.

I used the original weight tank pre in a studio but from I was told the WT72 being made now is a pretty different design so I don't know how much my experience applies to the one you can get now. I'll reference you to my post from last December: realgearonline.com/post/284463I still would like to try the current WT72 in my studio, with my mics at some point.

I have a bunch of V72s's (10), and 3 Coils, and a spare 2RU slot for one more tube preamp that will offer me a different flavor. The WT72 seems like it is more open in the top end by your review and DrBills great info + it is also a crazy great price.

If I had an unlimited budget and needed an open tube preamp that would be a nice contrast to V72s and Coils, I think I would get a Retro Powerstrip or maybe a Redd47 if I'm looking for something a little more Rock n Roll but yeah, both substantially more expensive than the Weight Tank.
