Your regular reminder of Uli Behringer's business practices and personal behavior: I was trolling Uli on GS once, he was trolling me right back, there was an exchange. In retrospect, I'm lucky I didn't end up with a lawsuit! The Behringer legal dept: wait you want us to file a lawsuit? How do we do that? It’s us who gets sued!

Your regular reminder of Uli Behringer's business practices and personal behavior: Have you seen the follow-up? Holy shit! The grinch's heart grew three sizes this Christmas. to people that didn't watch: Uli Behringer donated $200,000 and 1500 synthesizers to children's charities.

Call me a cynic, but I never believe the guy who gives the money away, I believe the organization who got it when they make the announcement. Seen to many of exaggerated giving.

[…]Have you seen the follow-up? […] Yup. In my book it looks more like the deeds of the public relations dept than the repentant sinner, to be honest. Not to mention that $200k and 1500 synthesizers probably doesn't make a major dent in their books – the stated 2021 EBITDA of Musictribe (the holding co) is $100m. Plus they seem to be considering going public, so optics make a difference. More important, though, cosmetic operations do not wash away the predatory IP theft business model (which these USB mics clearly show), or the owner's toxic public persona. So my review of him and his company remains one star out of five (or zero stars, if that's an option).

Everybody is copying.
For the Chinese, being copied is a compliment.
A local small scale music shop is forced to sell an AKG Perception mic @ 350€, Thomann has the same one 88€. Predatory behaviour of AKG (Harman/Samsung) or Thomann?
Just business as usual. Not the same mic. Just the same model. The small shop still has the previous incarnation. Thomann has a "new generation" optimised by Harman.
OTOH, another company that's disliked a lot on the interwebs, Alesis, was using their IP (ADAT) to make a reasonable buck. Yet a lot of people hate them for it.
I've never understood people hating companies like Alesis or Behringer. Monsanto, yes. Alesis, no.

Side topic, but how is Thomann selling certain mics, like Beyer ribbons, at what feels like half the price they go for in the states? Or is it related to what you're referencing here?

Thomann is big in Europe. They buy large quantities. When manufacturers want to dump a range cause it didn't sell through their normal channels, Thomann is often the only choice.
The Harman maneuver is just making the cheap knockoff themselves, before someone else does.
Thomann's prices for European products are a lot higher in the USA. Seems like a typical "the market can take it" kind of bet from Thomann. Transport cost and a weak dollar probably add to that, as their main warehouse is in Spain and they pay manufacturers in euro.

It’s complicated, first Cheaper to ship within Europe than to the US. Thomann probably buys direct from Beyer, that saves about 7%, not having to go through a distributor. Thomann is HUGE! I know of only a couple of dealers who do that kind of Beyer Biz in the US, and if you CALL not click you probably can get a better deal. I remember once comparing your average MI dealers Beyer’s sales figures to ours, I’ll put it this way, in one particular year we sold more Beyer B stock than they sold total Beyer & yes damn it I sold a shitload. It got me a nice baseball Jacket and Eagles Tix.

Not to be stuck on Sweetwater or whatever. They don't bargain anymore.

F Sweetwater, buncha asshats. Complete waste of time. Full Compass. At Full Co we always believed in closing the deal. I never really got the concept of letting someone walk, if you walk the deal you make zero, if I drop I at least get something. If you don’t have a rep PM I’ll set you up with someone who likes money.

They've been pretty good to me too over the years... and they have a good-old "layaway" program that I might use again... no financing BS just make your payments and eventually get the thing. Good shout for Alto!

More on track with the thread.. Is that mic the same size as the coles? I wonder if it could be a good donor body for a chinese ribbon motor..
