Alright,
Who has experience with the different versions? Trying to stay under a grand. DIY is welcome. Looking to upgrade and replace my two half rack fully modded gap 73's. I really don't need the eq, so looking at pre only versions.
Looking at the Don Nv73, pros/cons Sound Skulptor? Others?
Thanks

Thanks I think your on the right track with the Don's classics, if you want the 1073 pre, it is as close to a spitting replica of the circuit.

The Heritage 1073jr is fantastic - my personal favorite 1073 clone...Sal and Cowboy love the AML EZ1073...I've had the Avedis MA5 and it's great too...Lately I've heard a lot of buzz about the Great River again...Or buy an Apollo Twin and get the 1073...

Anyone else have any opinions? Any direct comparisons with the modded gaps?
Found the old thread over at the other site comparing a few of the module's. Vintech 573, Ff x72, sound Skulptor, nv73, and m5.

Rtzaudio.com Their 9762 or 9762a preamps will blow your skirt up. Promise. R Great. Just what I need. Another 1073 to lust after. Hey Randy, got any leads on a more affordable 1081 copy? I'd love to find something voiced like the AMS 1081 without having to sell a kidney for it.

I'd love to find something voiced like the AMS 1081 without having to sell a kidney for it. The preamp and EQ sections to the 1081 vs. the 1073 are NOT the same. The differences are more than skin deep. The 1081 is class A/B, with each EQ section being actively buffered, where as the 1073 is Class A and only has 2 buffered sections. Since I think you really want one of the old class A types (1073, 1084, etc), then I have some insight on those. As for all the class A clones and their sound.. The majority of the sound is in the transformers, specifically the output transformer. The active portions of the circuit are pretty easy to emulate as long as you use 'styrene caps and tantalums in the right places. Then again, authentic Neves from different batches and different years sounded different from each other, so a difference from the real thing to a clone isn't that big of a deal honestly.

No, I don't know of a 1081 copy, but you might talk to RTZ and see if he can build you something. Personally, I think both the Ingram and my RTZ preamps are better sounding than every Neve I have ever heard and I have been in a lot of studios and rented a bunch. Those Georgia Boyz know what is up.

I believe the Heritage 1081 is actually the 1081 eq with the class A pre circuit in the front instead of the AB.

I believe the Heritage 1081 is actually the 1081 eq with the class A pre circuit in the front instead of the AB. It's called the 8173, it's got the 73, pre mid bands of the 81, and hi shelving of the 84, seems like a best of all three type mish mash, probably sounds real nice?

Doesn't some one on here have a whole side car of them in 51x Racks? If it's anything like the U76 and it's faithfulness to an 1176 RevA, then it's damn sure close. I use that compressor as my permanent compressor on Vox and I never change the settings, just adjust the gain stage going to it and I havn't had one single vocal that it didn't make sound amazing. I wanted to build the 1073 he has but just havn't had the time. His kits are laid out really well and the guy seems to have a knack for shrinking rack gear into a 500 series. Damn it, now I want to build that Pre. It's been a month since I've built something.... getting the itch.

Looks like some of the parts are obsolete at mouser...this is one of the reasons I'm not a big DIY'er...it's almost as difficult to navigate as Nebula.

Well, I have a pair of Nv73 kits and a U76 kit on its way across the pond.
I am going to shoot them out against my fully modded gaps and see. Unfortunately we may be waiting awhile since some parts were back ordered at Mouser till July/August. though I should have all the parts for the u76 in a few days.

I thought that meant they had been discontinued or something.
