Dave Pearlman has my mic. The microphone was in permanent vintage mode. He is installing a toggle switch so I can switch between the standard more open mode and this darker “vintage” mode. I’m excited.

I have an early Pearlman TM-1. I did a test of it on voice and guitar (Wake Up Little Suzie with a couple clients at the time). Then more recently I did a mic shootout including the TM-1. 1) Heiserman H-47tube 2) Neumann U-87 with the Innertube tube retrofit 3) Max Kircher U-67 retrofit with a Neumann BV-12 transformer 4) Pearlman TM-1 with a Telefunken EF-14 metal tube. Mic preamps were the AML EZ1073-500. No EQ or compression was used. A little reverb was added from the artist's request. Here are the links. SNIP Every example I hear makes me more and more grateful that I bought the Heiserman. It's just extraordinary to my ears. And every client who has sung into it agrees. Yes the Heiserman is an exceptional sounding mic on this shootout - so detailed.
Very happy to have a matched pair on order, and so close to being ready I'm looking forward to A/B-ing the Heiserman against my Lucas CS4, which is close to perfection as far as mics go.

Im really looking forward to hearing that if you are able to share!! The Lucas is also another of those top-tier microphones that doesn't get the attention it deserves. Cheers, mate!

Received the microphone back yesterday with the newly installed roll off switch. The roll off is subtle, but there is definitely more high mid information in the standard setting. Looking forward to really putting it through it's paces. It definitely has a cleaner sound vs the FleA, which is a touch more harmonically complex. I imagine this is the same for the Heiserman as well. I could always have Dave install his BV8 transformer down the road instead of the large Cinemag transformer this one has. We'll see. I have a feeling this will be just what I need.

I was able to tryout a FleA 47 with their F47 (K47) capsule courtesy of mike yesterday. His FleA 47 has the F47, a metal EF12 tube, and their BV8 transformer. I decided to quickly shoot it out with my custom Pearlman TM-1. My TM-1 has an upgraded Cinemag 47 style transformer, NOS EF14 tube, and a Neuman K47 capsule. I compared the TM-1 to the FleA in both standard and vintage modes. The results were really nice. Both of these mics sound a bit different, but both sound really good and of the same family. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts about them. FleA kills with the accurate period look though. www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/xldvygx8i1u0ihqrktmtq/h?dl=0&rlkey=97i6u9habewc0v2o49qubribrI'm hoping to do a proper shoot out with both of these and jtc111's FleA 47 with the F7 (M7) capsule. I still have a session vocal project to finish. Then I'll hopefully do this shootout.

rob61 I love that shootout. I can’t tell you how often I’ve watched it. Your Pearlman has a Neumann K47 or Dave’s? It has an EF14, so then it is probably darn close to mine. I also have an MK U67 with a Neumann BV12. So this gives me great context, especially for the Heiserman and Innertube, which I do not. johneppstein don’t you have a TM-1? Played around again this morning. I had to adjust some positioning while singing classically. I kept distorting the mic with my high B. Lol. 120db was too much. Lol. Anyone try their TM-250? No, I do not have "a" TM-1.
i have two TM-1s, both in the earlier black finish. I have not opened either, but they sound great!

Recording magazine just did a positive review of Dave's TM12a microphone, Dave's version of the AKG C12a nuvistor mic.

John, are your TM-1s stock or do they have any upgrades?

John, are your TM-1s stock or do they have any upgrades? Stock, as far as I know.Howerver one came from a studio owner who knows Pearlman quite well, so I can't be certain. However I've noticed no significant differences. Both are the older black ones.

I’m really curious of the body Dave is using for it. With all the different takes of the same mics over and over again over the years, the idea of takes on not-as-popular mics, excites me! I would have already had a custom pair of C12a mics made (with a tube though), but couldn't decide what body to use. It’s still the wild west for a body like that, as it was when I had some 49b types made some years ago and why they’re in 87-style bodies. 49 style bodies are every now.

I love the TM 1. The TM2 is really cool too. Uses the same tube as a Lomo 19A9. Dave makes great mics.
