I recently picked up the MK67 kit from Max. I'm still waiting on the right deal for a used TLM 67, so it's not like I've been had a chance to give the MK67 a proper listen.
That being said, the things I've read here and elsewhere have me thinking that I might want to mod the MK67 with a Moby BV12 transformer eventually. However, upon looking at the guts of the MK67, I'm not relishing the idea of replacing the transformer myself and might be interested in paying someone to do the work for me.
Who here does that kind of work or knows someone that might? What am I looking at as far as cost goes?

Also, I should have mentioned that, if it wasn't obvious, I'm not in some big hurry to get this done, so I'm flexible on time. I also may not end up doing this at all, but I wanted to go ahead and get some good ideas on who's out there that I might be able to get to do this work.

Our own Doug Williams EmRR here did mine. He charged a very fair price and it was a quick turn around. He's done a lot of them, and he has his own Max Mods on hand, so I didn't have to send the power supply and head basket, just the guts.

Matter of fact, now that I think about it, I think he is indirectly responsible for first making me aware of the Moby BV12, and it's gnat's-ass similarity to the no longer available Neumann BV12.

I'm guessing you got that done before Neumann shut things down on parts, or do you have a source for Neumann BV12s? Asking for a friend....

Doug seems to be the right choice here. I PM'ed him. But I'll contact Indie if Doug can't do it.
Thanks for the recommendations everybody.

Ah, maybe I am misunderstanding , but if both transformers are designed for the circuit, isn’t it just two or four wires and securing the transformer, zip tie, glue gun ?

Max’s transformer doesn’t have leads and is a little different configuration. It’s a pain in the ass to get the Neumann/Moby installed.

I know max's transformer gets slammed a lot but , Its the best guitar amp mic Ive ever used , almost like a ribbon . I have a DU67 with his transformer and one with a Moby. The Tab BV12 was very bright and the moby is less so but still bright . Ive also experimented with a lot of tube types and find quiet NOS varieties dont vary too much in sound to me - TF silver/mullard/valvo . Both mics have neumann k67 caps . Strangely transformer swaps have made the biggest difference .

At the end of the day though, I imagine I'm still going to basically just want a 1:1 U67 sound. That being said, Ragan posted clips of an acoustic guitar some time ago that was taken with what I think was the stock MK67 transformer. I thought that clip sounded fucking fantastic. So, who knows. I might end up sticking with the stock transformer. Ragan, when did you swap out your transformer on your MK67?

Installing the Neumann transformer in the MK67 was a markedly favorable change.
And also, Doug’s the man!

Anything I've posted here would have been with that. It's dark and you may find yourself fighting the low mids some, but it was still the best mic I'd ever had. The Neumann/Moby clear up the low mids and open up the top, in very slightly different ways from one another. It's still a very smooth, mellow mic, it's just got more life to it with the Neumann/Moby. I, like you say, just wanted it as close to classic U67 as possible and the transformer is really the only place Max's design diverges from that.

anyone got any suggestions for a mic tech who can do a transformer swap on a mk67 in the uk? struggling to find someone at the moment. martin ex of sennheiser has retired. Dave at funky junk doesn't want to do it for some reason. maybe because it's an mk67 I don't know. any suggestions appreciated.

I don't know if they strictly do ribbons but the guys at Xaudia seem top notch. If anything they could probably point you in the right direction if they don't take it on.

Same situation here but in Australia, I have had too many declines to keep track, I am going to get another max mod just going to ask max himself how much he will charge on top to do it and he can have both the old transformer and the extra one with the new one i would order

Assuming he's still doing them, I recommend you guys just eat the shipping cost and have Doug Williams ( EmRR on this forum) do it for you. Max seems to be in denial about his transformer being off and probably won't do it. When I was looking to have mine swapped, I, too, first looked to have a local tech do the work. I contacted a local well-known and highly respected tech who used to work at a famous studio and write a regular column for a widely circulated industry magazine. First, he was confounded as to why I would want to replace a transformer that isn't broken, apparently of the belief that all transformers sound the same. Then he told me that I must be mistaken about the HF roll off on the MK transformer because nobody would release a product with that flaw. Then he treated me like a fool for paying the money to buy a transformer directly from Neumann. Then he wondered why I bother with Neumann mics at all when I could just buy a Peluso. Then he asked me to provide him the schematic and instructions on how to swap out the transformer. At that point I contacted Doug. I didn't have to explain to him why I was doing it because he did the same thing to his own mic. I didn't have to justify anything, he gets it. I didn't have to teach him how to do it, he has the schematic and has done the same work on many other MK67s. And I didn't have to ship the headbasket or power supply, just the guts, because he could use his own MK67 to test it after the swap. And he charged a very fair price. Just ship it to Doug.
