I downloaded the multitrack that Warren posted. There are a handful of channels tracked way way too hot on the Apollo and they're clipping pretty bad. Like the two electric guitar tracks are just trashed. Bummer. The console version sounds great and this really seems more like an advertisement for just booking time at Sunset and using that console. Of course the console version has more overdubs for a fuller arrangement so it's not really apples to apples. I have a UAD Satellite but not an Apollo. Do I need an Apollo just to use Luna? Why wouldn't the Satellite be enough? Feels like Avid back in the day not supporting anything but their hardware. Lame. That's my impression. He's hitting hard the console and it's adding a lot of goodness and not much cons. It's shaving transients, adding warmth, controlling boominess and harshness, adding glue. All the good stuff. Maybe it could be more open, ok, but that's an easy thing to do in the mix stage. Luna, otoh, is saturating while adding a lot of negative elements. I would rather get clean tracks actually. Also, feels that mixing that would be harder.

First Drew you know I think of UA plugins as audio crack, they are addictive as hell and some of the best. Be careful of the 95% thing though, first this is a game of diminishing returns. While yeah the whole 95% of a 300k console looks good, somebody is going to use it against you by getting to 95% of Luna for less and that price difference is while smaller is going to be the deciding factor. Then someone under cuts them.
What I think Benny and almost every pro is getting at is this, 5% difference pays the bills. That 5 % is why people come to us rather than DIY. Look we exist in a world where everyone is an AE or producer, but we can hear the difference.

I am just interested for curiosity … I am very, very happy (which I may have stated on some other threads here) with the LUNA summing and I have both the Neve and API and when SSL or any other comes out I will buy straight away. The reason is that LUNA and its summing extensions has allowed me to go ITB and sell my RND5060 plus a couple of compressors so the cost of the summing extensions definitely worked out to my benefit compared to HW summing. TLDR version: If something works stick with it..It's like some of us go round in an epic circle of buy, trash, try, buy.. You've sold your RND, I sold my 4K.. Years on I'm considering a 5059 or SSL mini desk.. That in a nut shell puts me back to the original SSL + outboard setup. "help I'm in a nutshell".. I get it, we all have our reasons for chopping and changing at certain points. The SSL went due to buying my first house, didn't have anywhere to put an LFAC and I needed the money. From thereon I've swapped chains out so much I don't even know what to think anymore.. Some "all ITB" mixes might not be so "ITB" after all, some OTB mixes sound crap.. Some decent mixes are the result of just having a good day and nostalgia plays more part in this than I'd care to admit. The biggest issue I have with plugins (or HW nowadays) is inconsistency, there's a lot of products / noise out there and I've been blindsided or fooled on more than one occasion. I'm like hey that sounds great..... Then a day, week, month later the novelty wears off just like the popularity of tape sims. I've come to this conclusion, if you find a setup that gives you a decent workflow with a sonic advantage over a long span of time stick with it.. The grass isn't greener, the tried and true method works etc. so I'm going to buy some expensive stuff to save me some money*, oxymoron? Experience says otherwise. Notes*: I'm not saying expensive stuff is the key to happiness (if certain plugs / interfaces gets you there then roll with it), I've used a lot of API / Neve in the past and they worked for me. Also the video below isn't giving plugs a hard time, it just reinforces the inconsistency point.
