Man the Paul Pena version slays. Completely OT but the doc 'Ghengis Blues' on Paul Pena going to Mongolia and throat singing is pretty awesome, they also talk a good bit about Jet Airliner in it

Man the Paul Pena version slays. Yeah, it's impressive. Great feel, and way more rockin' than SM's version (which I've always liked). Lots of cool guests on that album, too.

Speaking of SM, I dug out my copy of the DCC Greatest Hits. It sounds so much better than what they’re streaming on Spotify these days. Pre loudness war mastering with all the fullness [and depth!] still intact.

Brief portion of "Rock'n Me" Intro. Another "one take" practice vocal. EV767a>3rd Gen Scarlett w/Air Button on. Boy Howdy! Steve's hit version has a ton of reverb on it. So I'm going to play around with adding some different reverb(s), and a couple of Saturation Plugs. Along with some vocal Slap Delay, to make it sound a little double tracked, for fun. Viva La 70's! Chris P.S. Happy to say the PVB really helps!

1. My RE11 is supposed to get here by the end of the week. Looking forward to seeing if it makes a difference 2. Another one of those cases of memories differing as to how something was recorded, especially 18 years further down the road (Steve now says that he recorded all the vocals at home): www.guitarplayer.com/players/steve-miller-j50-the-jokerAdded: I just saw that Jeremy mentioned Steve saying this back in 2021 as well.

I thought I read an interview with Wayne Moss where he said Steve was self-conscious about his vocals, so Wayne would go to lunch and Steve would record his own vocals by himself while Wayne was out. I would’ve read this around the time Acustica Cardinal came out, which is sampled from Wayne’s Flickinger console. But maybe I dreamed that or something.

Sent an email to Steve’s old producer band mate and father of Steve’s god son, Ben Sidran to see if he would pop in. Funny enough I heard stories of very early Steve Miller recording at the original Full Compass Studios, nobody ever talked about the vocals.

He is just such a great singer. The chain would make no difference. He would have always ruled. Fly like an Eagle is in my top 5 favourite productions and songs.

Woah, that guitar player mag interview was priceless! Mucho respect for Steve in ways that go way beyond his incredible music and talent. The business acumen and relationship management was a hidden gem. Some of those descriptions and quotes are so cuttingly insightful or powerfully poignant. The description of early Jefferson Airplane will never leave me and the quote about his family making the newspaper for holding a race party in 1950s Texas. Just. Wow. As a kid of the '70s I grew up with Steve Miller in my ear, head and heart. This was exactly what I needed to read this morning before starting the daily slog.

I have a lot of respect for Steve Miller but for my tastes, the vocal compression on Jet Airliner is just too overcooked. It's almost like Darth Vader sometimes. Yes, it bought the vocals very much front and center, but it just didn't appeal to me.

Maybe it was done on a 747. Or a 737. In any event, Steve could take the money and run.

Man this brings back so many memories. Sitting in the parking lot in high school listening to SMB Greatest Hits, Queen, Guns ‘N Roses…
Honestly, Steven Miller is one of the greatest pure “popular” songwriters to ever come along. All of those tunes seeped into my stuff for sure.

The professional songwriter in you should appreciate the fact that a lot of the SMB stuff was written by others, Jet Airliner was written by someone I can’t for the life of me remember who had a very unique playing style. A couple of tracks on Wide River were written by his Latin Grammy and Oscar winning God Son Leo Sidran while Leo was still in High School.

Just to cap my original question from 2+ years ago, a little bit of "Fly Like an Eagle" on the "new" RE-11 to see if it makes a difference. Excuse the pitch

I always thought Steve Miller's vocal sound included an old U87, especially how it just sits right on the teeth, so to speak. Kind of like so many 70s vocals.
