I had a master room 305 for years and ADORED it. I expect this new audioscape gadget will be the flea’s eyelashes.

Of course there are going to be similarities when making the same kind of thing, except the audioscape XL305 is beyond just a clone, and the work that went into the sleds and making perfect springs was beyond tedious. It will be interesting to compare noise characteristics and sound quality between the Audioscape reverb and that clone in the future.

Chris here, I want to chime in with some details on the Reverb to avoid confusion/speculation. I didn't want to spoil the surprise in advance but here is the lowdown ;-) We did indeed work hand in hand with Wayne Kirkwood for nearly 4 years on this, the original designer of the XL-305. Without his knowledge, experience and insight this new re-imagined product would not exist! He basically schooled me in the ways of cutting and measuring springs along with directing me to some of the vulnerabilities and limitations of the original design. This did not come easy, we started from scratch on everything with only the core concept staying in place. Even the decay times on the springs were experimented with and are different from the original... Then after all that, I sat and personally goosed the design and aesthetic to fit more in the mold of an Audioscape product, where we added some tasteful touches to enhance the usability and overall experience. It has been one of the most positive experiences of my life, and I'm so proud of how it turned out!
We hand build every spring assembly on site here end to end, measure and cut the turns on 12 springs spread across 4 sleds, we wrap every pickup in MuMetal. That darn Spring Assembly is a product in itself from a manufacturing standpoint!
Anyways, I could talk forever and don't want to seem to sales-y, here is a link to Wayne's forum post where he comments on this re-imagined version vs the original 305
That post alone made the effort worth it :-)
Cheers, Chris

This seems very cool, but my only problem is that back in the day, I ditched my spring reverb as soon as I could get a Lexicon reverb in a box at home. So I wonder why I would want one now. I think I had the Fostex one, but I'm not sure, it's been a long time.

A toast for Chris from the folks of MicMix in 1979: I'm on the far right. You can see a bunch of spring sleds on the table behind us and circuit boards on the cart to the right. It's a real pleasure working with you Chris.

I think I had the Fostex one, but I'm not sure, it's been a long time. To be fair, at one point, people were ditching plates and chambers in favor of those lexicons, too You gotta try a 305; it's in a whole other league than the Fostex, Orban, et al. I can't speak to the AS version (haven't heard it yet), but a good spring (like the 305, or better yet like a big AKG or similar) brings something magical to the table, and won't sound like you're running your signal through a guitar amp. No 'boing', just sparkly spooky tail, not unlike a plate. But different enough to make it worth having the extra flavor
