I wonder what the difference in 16gb ram vs 32 would hold for us music guys? I wonder if it would be the difference maker in having a bunch of VST's just chilling in my template already opened ready for use and not seeing any lag cause of it.. that sort of thing ? You’re more likely to run out of CPU or overheat the Mac Book Pro unless you use a lot of virtual instruments.

apple posted this image with their launch. is interesting as it shows quite clearly the m1 behind intel. i fact checked the graph and it doesn't compare the m1 max with the fastest intel options. it compares slower intel i7 chips. apple are once again fos... but excellent at marketting. I looked at the leopard laptop. 45w CPU. Hard to imagine it requiring 80w+ like the graph says.. I think they're comparing total power consumption of competition to their chip alone in typical apple fashion.

But they keep doing it because it works on consumers, I think.

Are you saying they are compairing their SOC (only) to a complete laptop/system? they must be because the i9 intel laptop cpu spec says 35-45w i'd even suggest the apple is not as low wattage as they state. nothing is for free. you either get low watt or you get high speed. you can't have both.

it's also occurred to me the apple image is for the m1 max and not the m1 pro and is once again misleading. they are not the same chip so can't have the same performance.
it gets more and more comical.

I looked up the leopard, looks like it comes with a power hungry Nvidia GPU. The new Apple chips have the GPU as part of the die, so it’s probably a pretty fair comparison. AMD had been trying to make the perfect SoC for decades, hoping they could supply Apple. AMD made some good chips, my desktop is AMD cpu/gpu chip, performs pretty well. Intel been catching up and hired AMD’s GPU guy. Apple still felt they could do it better and they probably are. However yeah, the marketing is always suspect LOL, and you can get a pretty nice Lenovo Yoga with touch screen for a lot less like I did. The Yoga has the 11th Gen Intel, supposedly boosts above 5gHz. Feels like a regular laptop though. Touch is fun for synths, and flips for Netflix sessions, that’s cool. I do like my old MacBook’s quietness. The Lenovo is a bit loud.

In Aust to ramp up from 16 gig to 32 gig ram is; wait for it - $600. The higher specced option from 32 to 64 gig is still "only" $600 even though the extra ram is doubled. Some "persuasion" in those prices me-thinks.
I thought it was optimistic to believe a Pro- mini would be part of the reveal; it would have captured a lot of people who will now buy the MBP and just when Apple need a boost a Pro mini and/or i-Mac will arrive (6 months or so)
Cheers, Ross

I’m glad to see magsafe back and 3 x Thunderbolt plus a HDMI … looks like someone has been listening to customers.
Specced out on 64Gb Ram and fastest CPU and 1 Tb SSD it comes in at just over €4500
It remains to be seen how these handle typical audio load and if the fans come on much and how much noise they make… I certainly would not buy one until I heard some early adopter reports.

The fans don’t come on in the m1, wouldn’t you think the m1x even better ?

I had the m1 mini , liked it but returned as at the time the Aurora Big Sur drivers were wonky, my 2012 i7 mbp is still getting the job done , but I lean towards the new m1x 14in mbp.

I'll wait for a mini pro. Hopefully that will actually happen within 6-12 months, which would be perfect timing for me. Has anyone revealed official or unofficial info about a possible Mini Pro?

Lots of speculative YT videos, just look at the new mbp and think ram, cpu and I/o, those would be new mini m1x parameters.

However, the Mac Mini specs historically do not always keep pace with the MBP. Apple may decide to keep it an M1 machine so that a tweaked out Mini doesn’t compete with its eventual M1 Mac Pro. All speculation of course. Meanwhile I love my M1 Mac Mini and don’t regret the purchase.

Unless you need the ram for big session/ video, the current m1 with 16 gigs, is plenty powerful.

Apple said yesterday that they now are one year into their 2 year transition away from Intel processors. So new Minis are one year away at the most. I don’t think Apple usually are late with such promises (unlike everything in our little audio world). My guess would be spring and that they do the Mac pros last but who knows I am super happy for these new MBPs, they have removed most of their stupid design decisions from the last few years and the processors looks amazing. Only thing missing for me now is a legacy USB port, so unfortunately I will still need a dongle for most of what I will connect. I will buy a 16” for sure.

The fans don’t come on in the m1, wouldn’t you think the m1x even better ? no. Bigger power = more heat. can't get around that.

Maybe, the soc architecture seems so much more efficient that heat is significantly lessoned at least based in user reviews: Russ Hughs at protools expert.

True, but these new SOCs have more core on them. More cores mean more heat. No way around that. Still the M1 laptop will be much quieter than an intel one due to wattage. It seems the early M1 pro benchmarks confirm Apple "marketing" is working well.......

Ya, I understand. I just remember Russ, bring a little flabbergasted about how his new m1, didn’t get warm at all not have the fans turn on compared to his Intel machine.
He ordered a new m1x 14 inch mbp and James Ivey, the 16 inch, supposed to get them ext week, curious what they say .

The speculation was that it was coming yesterday, then didn’t. Jesse, they might be waiting for the more hardcore “pro’ machines till they have more adoption at the pro software level. If their chip production is at all limited it makes sense to get the laptops out there, most users won’t be using apps that push the limits.

Looks like everything I need for work is supported out of the gate. Probably going to end up with the mini in the studio too when they drop.

But will depend on how you use it. Audio work? Doubt it'll strain it. Video encoding and rendering. I'm sure it'll have fans and they will be going.
