Updating a lot of efficient code can be quite the ordeal: Satin and Presswerk are more efficient while being more complex internally than a ton of other plugins. *Looks at every other tape plugin except for Chow Tape* The reason they and lot of older plugs that sounded good were so efficient and sounded so much better than the competition was because of assembly instructions. They could do more without needing bringing a computer to its knees. They need to be partially rewritten, especially if they didn’t use a modular framework like a custom, better version of JUCE. The Variety of Sound plugs sounded so good 10 years ago because they were just x86 assembly and synthedit guis. Developers like McDSP and PSP probably have a lot of work to do. Some of the PSP plugs have crazy distortion algorithms much more complex than a soft clipper into a hard clipper like the typical “console” emulation. Those Variety of sound plugs were and are still great. He is going through them and making them 64 bit now. Wish he would make them Mac compatible. Thrillseeker VBL is an amazing plug and I've never found anything else that gets that sound. Miss it.
Carry on.

Carry on. ThrillseekerVBL was awesome. Density has an amazing overdriven effect to it. NastyVCS was cool but he added minimum phase oversampling to NastyVCS and FerricTDS so there are phase shifts now.

Just watched the Apple event. M1 Pro Laptops look incredible with most of the upgrades that were expected. But…no mention of Mac Mini M1 Pro and the store still only has the Mac Mini M1.

This is the waiting game I'm not going to get baited into with Apple. I'm just going to keep cooking on my M1 mini. If a pro ever comes fine, if not, fine.
Might be in the market for the m1 pro sometime.

One can only hope the chips will make their way into at least an iMac pro. Should be powerful as hell.

So. I’m lazy. Is it an improved chip from M1

They have two different upgraded chips. One is called the M1 Pro, the other called the M1 Max.
Both chips seem like a reasonably powerful upgrade from the M1. I bet any of us studio guys would be fine with the M1 Pro. I'm certain the M1 Max is going to be targeting high level computing with video.
Both 16-in and 14-in MacBook Pro models will be able to take either chip. There's upgrades to the SSD, and the amount of memory allowed.
I think for MacBook Pro owners it's a definite upgrade.
I'm bummed they didn't upgrade the Mac Mini. But I might buy a MacBook Pro just to be more portable.

Just an m1 would work for basic remote sessions.
I would however use an m1 pro for my studio. Time will tell but for now I'm working ok on the m1.

If I'm looking at it correctly, the M1 Pro and M1 Max have the same power for non-graphics tasks, but the Max has a lot more GPU cores, so it is a video-editing beast. Both are considerably more powerful than the M1. We'll probably start seeing benchmarks in about a week.
Apple also claims they have the best displays ever in a laptop. "XDR Liquid Retina."
One thing I'm really excited about is they have three built-in "studio quality mics." So we'll all be able to get rid of our mic collections. That's nice.
I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of my old 2012 Macbook Pro. This is the upgrade I've been waiting for.

Might be interesting to see how it does against a real editing suite that can utilize CUDA cores in NVIDIA GPUs. When switching from rendering on an i7 to rendering in GPU, the render times dropped from hours to minutes for me.

That is HUGE. Especially how these chips use memory thats gonna make a big difference for big renders. This is a nice comparison: www.engadget.com/apple-m1-pro-m1-max-chips-macbook-pro-172415918.htmlMissed the part about the mics! Thank god, I can get rid of all these clunky big things. And now direct memory access is a thing on the GPUs and x86 platforms so thats another way they can close the gap...if there is a gap. Of course all the other benchmarks out there the m1 did pretty damn good and that was just with 8 gpu cores. It lagged in multi thread use though which is where something like the Mac pro took over, plus the dedicated GPU cards. One thing I don't think I've read is the ability to add any external PCI cards. Which is important to me for HDX but also would be cool to see how these computer did with an external GPU to lean on as well.

Obviously final cut will be optimised for the apple GPU. Their comparison was against a 5600m which isn't a high performer. But I am sure people are happy they waited to purchase. These new macs appear to be alot more powerful for real tasks.

But a 3080 is about half the cost of a Macbook pro so that is something to consider.

Darn I was hoping for a mini pro too! I really need to replace my old MBP, its loud and slow. Debating if I should get an M1 mini or the new base 14" MBP.

Be Nice if they allowed external GPUs with their chips, I bet that would be killer. I'm sure it'll happen when the "new Mac Pro" comes which supposedly they are working towards getting a pro grade tower with their chip in it. And it wouldn't make sense for people to get that if it can't hold PCI cards.

ml , for the additional cost: you get the Retina display, mobility, more I/o and much more cpu processing.

once the new laptops hit the wild i'd avoid updating the os in your current machines considering apples history of purposefully slowing down superceded models.

I wonder what the difference in 16gb ram vs 32 would hold for us music guys?
I wonder if it would be the difference maker in having a bunch of VST's just chilling in my template already opened ready for use and not seeing any lag cause of it.. that sort of thing ?

I want a mini pro. These Mac Book Pros are already backordered to December and I was looking to buy the new Mini ASAP and then a new window laptop. I need both.

apple posted this image with their launch. is interesting as it shows quite clearly the m1 behind intel. i fact checked the graph and it doesn't compare the m1 max with the fastest intel options. it compares slower intel i7 chips. apple are once again fos... but excellent at marketting.
