Basically in Australia it either has to be faulty, not advertised correctly and/or unfit for purpose. But typically you cannot return a product because you changed your mind.

It depends on the Retailer. Free market capitalism/competition has its upsides.

You can do it with apple stuff here.... and some stores for music gear... Mannys, Port Mac guitars...etc Cheers Wiz

Yeah I’ll probably wait for this into next year. I just have to say - to have a computer - a day in day out high performance computer - that has lasted 10 years like my Mac Mini is just incredible.

The current m1 with 16 gigs can do some very heavy lifting and stays cool and quiet due to its soc architecture.
The only reason to wait would be if you really need a very very high performance machine for very big sessions, larger screens, more I/o.

Well if they don’t announce m1x in the October event I’ll keep it. I’m trying to edit some black magic camera video in support of my music and my 2015 i7 is just not cutting it.

Right now Apple and just about everybody else is caught in the chip / supply chain situation, so announce and delivery could be to completely different time frames. Personally I’m watching how iPhone 13 deliveries go to see how Apple handles it. I would not at all be surprised if new Apple silicone machines get pushed back.

I had a Mac mini that lasted quite a while too, until it died earlier this year. So I was left with no choice but to jump on the MI. So far no regrets. More power and runs cool. Rosetta covers most of the issues I might have had with plugins. I went for the 3 year service plan to cover my back in case the M1 was a lemon. So far I have zero regrets. $1100 for a fast, powerful 16GB Ram/512 GB SSD machine worked for my needs.

Yes, zippier. I've had zero issues with multiple plugins. I don't use hundreds of instances of samples so I couldn't say on that front. I wish it had more USB ports but I bought a larger hub to solve that. I only use one large monitor so I didn't need to figure out a workaround for that particular issue. For years I aimed at the idea having a computer for 10 years or so but usually it would fall short by a couple of years. In the case of the M1 I took another approach and figured that at $1100 plus the service upgrade, if I only get 3 or 4 years out of it I won't feel burnt. Plus it IS nice to be back at the front edge of Apple software and not have to be lagging behind with an old OS and all of annoyances that can cause. I think on some level folks are thinking the M1 is not good enough for pro use because a new better model is on the horizon. I think the biggest issue is making sure it's compatible with your current interface.

The only computers i've had for 10 years or more are PC's. I replaced my old PC I built in 2010 I think last year. Wasn't really anything wrong with it either, still worked fine actually. I just wanted to play a more modern game really. And even then probably could have just updated my GPU. But figured it was time.
I did have a mac pro cheese gratter for almost the same amount of time. But the OS updates killed that machine more so than the machine itself.

I had the mac mini (late 2012 i7) it had all the upgrades done SSD, max memory. It lasted really well, i used it until 2017-18. But the PC I have now just destroys it for audio performance. Its possible i would have moved to M1 if it was out but you can build a monster PC for much cheaper than a high end mac.

My new M1 is a marked upgrade in processing power. I like Macs but used to have a PC and respect that choice too. So much of this debate depends upon the needs of the user. I record and mix music but don’t do surround or post production work so the current M1 works great for me. One of the shocking things about the new M1 Mac mini is its low “un-Apple” price point. I think you’d be hard pressed to build a PC for $1100 that would match its performance but I could be wrong.

In July, I bought my M1 Mini (16/512) refurbished, from Apple for $900.
I can't imagine a better deal than that! I certainly couldn't build a Hackintosh that outperforms it for that dough.
Zippy, zippy, zippy!

The mac mini is a bargain if you want to use MacOS or logic/final cut. You can still build a PC that will out perform it in many cases for a similar price, but considering form factor and power draw, nothing can touch the new M1 series. It will be very interesting to see what the future high performance M series processors bring. That's when we see some game changing performance gains.....

Just heard NFM has M1/8 mini in store $658 As opposed to the 699 price point, right? It does seem like a bargain as just a simple daw machine. Might struggle on high vsti usage though, I take it?

I just heard from a friend in Austin who has seen the new machines from Apple engineers that the M1x units will be out in November. He was talking 10 Core with 64 Gigs of unified Ram as an option. Apparently these computers are unreal fast.... I will be getting a Laptop and running my world off it..

edit: just to clarify, I don't imagine your specific example of 64 gigs of ram would be available on the mini, but more interested in whether the mini is part of the M1x update in November if you happen to know. From what I remember following apple updates years ago, it seems like the various models would update at different times from each other.

If my DAW/NLE patchwork pc goes down again, this could be very tempting...

I'm waiting for the m4 because they said it would have a zero point energy generator and be able to read minds.
