Holy pro clarity Batman! I've never heard my monitors this clear! Did I mention the conversion is really good? I ended up bypassing the monitor controller, sounds best straight in. Seriously, the spatial width and clarity was not something I was getting with my Apollo silver face. Can’t wait till my octo gets here so I can open some older sessions and really give the mixes a listen.

Looks good. I decided to install my satellites on a rack shelf. They fit right in. On a fence about Carbon still, as my business has ground to a stand still with the pandemic.

Looks great, except we really have to upgrade that Rolls!😀 I’m hoping to get a Berhinger Powerplay setup soon. I think I’ve had that Rolls since I built my first studio in 2002. He he.

Whats the OWC dock like? cheers Wiz So far so good. I just got it the other day. I needed the additional Ethernet port to run my VIs on my Mac mini using Vienna server. I still have to configure that, but I have a bunch of things running through it including the Octo and it’s working well. Runs a touch hot though.

What apple computer do you recommend for the Carbon interface? I want to get into the M1, but not sure if it's compatible. I also want to hook up two displays. Where did you buy your Carbon? I found a guy that says you can get it for $3500. I'm looking for a dealer right now that sells one for that. I just found out that Avid is giving you the ProTools Ultimate package when you purchase a Carbon. Any feedback or info you guys can share would be much appreciated. Thanks

Thanks Some simple issues with M1 here is the link to AVID’s compatibility docs for Carbon. It’s the one thing Avid is better at than most. avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/compatibility/Carbon-RequirementsAs for dealer pricing discussions best to do that in private, nothing worse than getting a dealer in trouble for possibly breaking MAP in a public discussion.

I got mine through Vintage King. I also picked up a UAD Octo Satellite and they took my Apollo Quad silver face as a trade in. Not too bad.

Is it true that you can’t use Waves plugins with Carbon? There was a guy saying that they aren’t supported by Avid with Carbon. I have 1 day before the Free Ultimate software deal and I’m still gathering info.

Waves doesn't have any AAX DSP plug-ins. Their AAX native plug-ins run just like any other AAX plug-in in Pro Tools.

I just use a few of their plugins. But I do have other questions regarding AAX plugins. I guess if the plug manufacturer makes aax it works for Carbon, however it’s the DSP designed ones/supported plugins that only work when you click on that dsp button in Protools Hybrid engine? I use Soundtoys/Valhalla/Waves mostly. I will probably get a UAD satellite, but I really don’t miss UAD that much, since going back to Apogee.

You pretty much nailed it, the thing you have to figure out is who at some point will port to Carbon and what you absolutely need DSP for. Could AVID have made this easier? Sure a simple software wrapper built in so all AAX would run on DSP! I’ll bet somewhere in their Development agreement they have language that Standard AAX will never run on AVID DSP, I will also bet that they and all their Developers like being able to charge more for HDX and Venue family plugins.

It’s difficult to keep track of everything when it’s constantly changing…wish I could go back to analog, I just want shit to work like it’s advertised without having to do IT all the time to get things to work! It’s annoying, I built a studio to record music, not search for a workflow and troubleshoot bs all the time.

I’ve bounced back and forth looking for a system that works for me, since I left ProTools. I thought dsp and a solid multi-functional interface with top conversion would be my solution, but just driving me crazy doing the research and I have 24 hours to purchase to get the Ultimate package deal.

I didn't really know AAX from AAX DSP when I first looked at Carbon, no biggie. Everything runs AAX just like PT vanilla has been for a long time, but if you enable the hybrid HDX monitoring, the plug-ins will be bypassed as the mixer itself will now run on the DSP chips.
Unless...
you have an AAX DSP version of that plug-in installed, then it just switches to the AAX DSP version and runs along with the mixer on the DSP chips. They bundle all the Avid AAX DSP plug-ins with the yearly subscription:
304 Bundle Classic Compressors Bundle Moogerfooger Bundle Pro Series Bundle Pultec Bundle Reel Tape Suite Voce Bundle Focusrite d2/d3 Bundle Eleven Effects Impact Reverb One ReVibe II Smack! Tel-Ray Variable Delay Eleven MK II HEAT D-Fi Bundle Dynamics III EQ III BF76 Compressor Avid Channel Strip SansAmp PSA-1 D-Verb Mod Delay III AutoPan Maxim Pitch II Dither POW-r Dither Signal Generator Time Adjuster Trim Down Mixer InTune MasterMeter
plus perpetual licenses for:
McDSP 6050 Ultimate Channel Strip Brainworx bx_masterdesk Brainworx bx_Purple Audio MC77 Brainworx bx_rockrack Brainworx bx_console N
All those other free plug-ins they bundle are AAX only, so they're disabled during hybrid DSP monitoring.
I've added a bunch more Plugin Alliance stuff that's AAX DSP:
ACME Audio Opticom XLA-3 ADA STD-1 Stereo Tapped Delay Amek EQ200 Brainworx bx_console Focusrite SC Brainworx bx_console SSL 9000 J Brainworx bx_townhouse Buss Compressor Brainworx bx_shredspread Brainworx bx_subfilter elysia alpha compressor elysia niveau filter Maag Audio EQ4 Maag Audio Magnum-K ProAudioDSP DSM V3 Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Class A SPL Free Ranger SPL IRON SPL Passeq SPL Transient Designer Plus Vertigo VSM-3 Ampeg B-15N Ampeg SVT-VR Classic Brainworx bx_bassdude Brainworx bx_distorange Brainworx bx_rockergain100 Brainworx bx_rockrack V3 Player Brainworx bx_yellowdrive Diezel Herbert ENGL Savage 120 Friedman BE-100 Fuchs Train II Gallien-Krueger 800RB
Just read the plug-in description to see if it's AAX DSP compatible. I recently ventured into Softube AAX DSP with Volume 5, the Tube-Tech Collection and Valley People Dynamite:
Trident A-Range Tube Delay Spring Reverb Acoustic Feedback Passive-Active Pack FET Compressor Fix Doubler Transient Shaper Saturation Knob Summit Audio Grand Channel Summit Audio EQF-100 Summit Audio TLA-100A Vintage Amp Room Bass Amp Room Valley People Dyna-mite Tube-Tech Classic Channel Tube-Tech CL 1B Tube-Tech ME 1B Tube-Tech PE 1C
So there are fewer choices in AAX DSP, but there are still some nice options for hybrid monitoring, and they all run natively as AAX as well.

If the Carbon had a way to be used with Windows (or if I were still using mac) I would have jumped on this even if the interface was a little over my budget. Sure, the lack of Waves DSP is sort of a bummer, but I'm not sure if there's anything in the Waves catalog (outside of the signature plugins if those are high in your list) that can't be replaced with something from Plugin Alliance.
(All this especially after finding out Lynx discontinued their Aurora MADI expansions... makes the UFX+ look less appealing.)
To echo your feelings guitfiddler, I think I too miss the simplicity of previous days (though in my case, it was just PT|HD systems that just 'worked').

Thanks for the info The Sonnox Oxford plugs are still great have AAX DSP versions too. Oxford EQ still has one of the fastest workflows ever. The real issue is the best native non-linear plugs are so much better than anything that runs on a dsp chip and they all use cpu and have latency from linear phase oversampling. There’s no getting around it. 3500 worth of analog hardware compresses much better on the way in than a 3500 dsp box.

(Massive snip of plug-in dump) What Mac computer are you using? Have you compared the preamps to any of the outboard preamps? I use a 2014 15" MacBook Pro. It's not on the tested for use with Carbon list, but it is the oldest MBP listed as tested with the latest version of PT. If it's got a Thunderbolt port, you can select AVB in AudioMIDI and run Carbon. It's mounted in my preamp/EQ rack so I hear it's preamps against outboard all the time: I've done a ton of choral recording in the past 6 months and choose Carbon over my Audient and Focusrite preamps. For close mic'd drum shells and speakers, I'll still lean into the Trident and Neve sound.
