While sorting through my cable bag I found an AKG D1000E microphone. I doubt I’ll use it, and would prefer an SM 57 instead. Before I sell or trade it, do you find that mic useful for any particular purpose?

I like mine. I actually have cut some keeper vocals with it. Check the foam; it’s likely quite deteriorated.
I know some people like them on guitar amps, it’s been a minute since I’ve tried that.

Before I sell or trade it, do you find that mic useful for any particular purpose? View AttachmentIt has its own tone, some call it a mellow 57/58. I at one time had 5 or 6 of both the D1000 and D1200. Frankly after 30 years of wear I couldn’t tell the D1000’s from the 12000’s, I bought them because I was working with a producer who loved them on Snare and Tom’s. I have used them on just about anything you would use a workhorse dynamic on without problem even live vocals in a pinch. In fact when I started out I had a regular live gig with a girl where I always blamed her D1000 for how bad she sounded, it wasn’t the mic! Had her in a studio once years later with a U87 well in about 2 takes I begged her to bring in her D1000, it mellowed her harsh edges better than what her dealer boyfriend would bring by. They are built as well as just about any mic, except for the switches, the switches suck and are hard to find. The producer who turned me back on to them had a tech bypass them on his, but he also loved one of mine that had the switches stuck in a different position. I don’t think I ever paid more than $35 for one, so not sure selling it is worth the hassle, my thought it was hysterical that the foam in the case I kept the D1000s, D1200s and D190s in was worth more than any of the mics. I loaned one to one of the security guards at my building, a full sail grad) for VO work and he loves it.

Looks like something out of the original Star Wars movies. Cool mic.

I agree but the light gold D190e Pope mic looks cooler to me though no where near as rugged. Also always thought those triangular “Tripower” mics were cool looking even if I haven owned one since the 90’s.

Hmmm.. now you guys have me thinking about keeping it. Money's been crazy tight since my divorce, and thought I'd get an SM57 by selling this first. I have an SM58 I use on occasion for guitar amps, but prefer he 57. I really liked the Soyuz 0-13 on mic cabs, but I couldn't afford a $600 guitar amp mic.
The Soyuz 0-13 FET of course sounds great on acoustic guitars, but my Soyuz 0-19 sounds even better, so I didn't really need the SDC for what I've been doing.

In this D1000E vs SM57 shootout, the 57 sounds better to me except for one of the quieter jangly guitar parts. I wonder which setting he had it on though. It says it's on the "B" setting that gives proximity effect, but it seems thin to me.

I know way to many examples where a malfunctioning mic has componensated for a voicing. I have always found it ironic that in field where our primary medium is based on sample theory that we make so many decisions based on the completely insignificant sample of 1.

I have a D1000E. I've only used it on guitar amps. Like the other guys have mentioned, it's mellower than an SM57. I've made some IRs of a Weber Ceramic Blue Dog speaker in a 1x12 cabinet including an SM57 and D1000E on the 'B' mode if you fool around with impulse loaders for guitar. It's all close mic'd on Axis impulses for my reference. Link to IRs

I too found an AKG D1000E (it was in a garage of an older guy I knew and he said I could have it) they used one one the snare on some Led Zepplin stuff (although I think only live)
Shockingly they appear to be selling for pandemic prices online of $100-$150 bucks - might sell mine as well (also my Mackie 1202 I just discovered in my storage - the EDM guys love those things and will pay too much for those classic preamps)

I love it. Totally unique midrange. Awesome on grindy bass amps. Mine is actually gnarlier-sounding than a 57 (though not harsh), so i grab it when i want some extra snarl. Maybe mine is just broken. Ha.

It has a bit of that 'poke through the mix mid' but not in a way that makes me want to tear my hair out. Disclaimer: I think every mic ever made is more useful than a 57.

The pandemic seems to have turned everyone into a collector. Check out what Shure 548 goes for—you won’t believe it!

Well . . . they have all the testicular fortitude of a gelded stallion.
something to consider if you were thinking of using them on guitars.

Yeah, this ^^^ They are skinny on the bottom, which is maybe why i hear mine as 'gnarly' in the mids / top. I love it on guitar, but only if its pair with something to fill out the bottom. And obv that goes extra for bass (er, probably shoulda mentioned that in my post above, but i tend to lean on the DI more for low end and the amp for grit / mids, so uh....sorry if i ruined anyone's recording today 🤣)

Obviously the SM57 pushes some low frequencies in an unnatural way, but there's something about it that makes my ears relax.

I'd grab a Unidyne 57 if they weren't so overpriced.
