I have a Sank-modded M260. It sounds good but has dismally low output. Good for loud guitar amps. Sounds good on mandolin too.

There's a number of people who can now do a proper piston ribbon in a Beyerdynamic. B&O are also piston types, and Samar have some models with that type.

A piston ribbon is not necessary, just needs to be done proper. I've been getting very good results with a traditional ribbon for years. Blasphemy, I know, but I trust my ears =) (and sorry for the aside, as this isn't about fiddle mics specifically) Regards Jon

I do a lot of live recording work. I bought a Samar AL95 for guitar cab since I couldn't afford a Royer. My violinist "prefers" to be on a wireless system so she can move around. However, last month, we had too much interference and I quickly threw up the Samar on her. Lucky for us the guitarist was using a Helix this time. This was the second time. She has a special violin, quite old, but with typical mics, it can get harsh. On the Samar, it was rich, meaty and super smooth on top. We were both blown away all over again. you can really hear the wood, sorry to be cheesy.
---
Edit: The Samar is not as dark as other ribbons. It has an extended top (for a ribbon) but remains very smooth.

Guys, My Michael Joly modded Apex 205 has lost it's mojo (volume and tone). Cheers, Ross Sorry to hear that Ross. I think that mic is worth a shot at restoring. My initial thought would be to contact Jon @ shinybox. He's on this thread as well. Good luck with it. I've still got 3 of those MJ205's!! They work sooo well. I've used them on fiddle too when a 77DX was too dark.
