T bolt to PCIE chassis is the simple answer. That was the answer. However, now the new silicone and new OS do not support External PCI support. Last I checked anyways..if that has changed then I'll be buy a mac mini. if you want to, you can upgrade your cheese grater to low level trashcan specs. I've done it. Rock solid. Still, I believe Mojave is the last OS it will take..... Mine is a 3,1 so It is too old to upgrade unless I buy a new MOBO and then find the processors and and all that. Faster to just buy an upgraded 4,1 or a 5,1 from the get go. But now, it doesn't make sense as you pointed out the OS is already pretty old. 3 versions old now. So it's just not worth it at this time to buy something "new". I'm still hoping the new mac mini with a Sonnet Chassis will work once PCI support is unlocked. Especially because the new mac minis are very very quiet. I easily upgraded to a 5,1. My computer tech sent me the stuff, and it was an easy swap out. the most tricky part was flashing the video card which was a holdup on going up to Mojave. But even that was pretty simple.

Had a very similar situation in that I built my own PCs for years and finally got to the point where I didn't want to build the car anymore, I just wanted to drive it. Switched in 2015 to an iMac and then to a Mac Pro in 2020. Zero regrets. Zero issues although I rarely had a PC problem either.

PC for a long time.
Went to Mac for video in the cheese grater era. Those were super solid.
Then the whole shop upgraded to iMacs...somehow even more solid.
Now I run 2012 Macbook Pro and a late 2015 iMac for audio and still some video. Mostly solid. The Macbook is starting to choke but 9 years is pretty good for a guy who doesn't want to touch a computer other than to use it as a tool. My iMac is being updated by a pro in a few days so I can install Native Instruments Machine. If not for that I'd happily stay back at El Capitan (10.11). I only update machines and software when updating benefits me more than not updating. I only buy plugins from manufacturers who don't screw me in that regard. Softube, Kush, Boz, Valhalla. Good brands and good update policies.

I'm sorry. I went the other way. Had a Mac and nothing but trouble. I'm on my 2nd recording PC in 15 years now. My experience was similar to svart's except that I had several Macs and nothing but trouble. Never again. -09

I honestly have never understood why Mac vs. PC is such a divisive subject.
I mean, yeah, I love Macs and would hate to go back to Windows, but only because I have 10+ years of being acclimated to Mac, along with all of my important stuff being formatted for Mac.
But really, they both get the job done, and they both have their drawbacks. I’ve dealt with showstopping issues on both platforms.
As a Mac user, I will say that I’m not a fan of Apple’s approach to customer service and repairs. And I absolutely LOATHE how they constantly break software compatibility with every new OS. I’m hanging out on Sierra until I’m forced to upgrade.
PCs obviously have their problems too, though. I certainly dealt with several nightmare situations back when I used Windows. It’s all kind of a gamble, really.

It’s all kind of a gamble, really. You just have to work on whatever you like I guess. Who knows, I may not like the Mac environment and updates. If I go PC again I have a better hardware and software plan in the wings. Really purpose built machine only for studio use. I'm not a big fan of windows 10 for a studio machine but I have found a windows stripper (hrh) that allows a stripped down version to be customized and installed. I really don't like that I can't repair a Mac. When I have issues on my PC, yes it can take lots of time but I can do it. I'm a bit unsure about this move but like I say, it'll be a trial run for a while. I can sell the m1 and build a new PC any time. You see how I am? One foot perpetually out the door. I always need an escape hatch.

The Mac users tend to start threads to get affirmation of their choice and then they fanboy about it and it gets tedious.

All that really matters is that the OS/box helps, not hinders, you to get your work done: to each their own:)

I agree with to each their own and whatever works for you,...... my experience probably has little relevance to 2021 but after owning both years ago, and finding the difference to be significant and because I still never have problems even today on a 9 year old mac , I have no plans to ever go back to PC after switching to Mac and plan to buy the next M1x next year.

I like that PC is easier to try lots of freeware stuff that isn’t so easy to get on Mac. Usually if they made something years ago, it still works on win10, or somebody made a solution. Then every once in a while there’s the USB key crap, like my old wavelab that won’t install on newer Windows.. At least the box still looks brand new and expensive I was happy to download Room EQ wizard, I guess it won’t work on new Mac chips? Things like that are great on PC. Also, beefing up the specs is easy on PC, I love that. I do hate that I’ve already had to replace my motherboard on a 3 year old build. I also hate that I have to re-de-clutter Windows again after a clean install. I hate that while bouncing through analog a random little reminder pop up jingle from Windows announces that there’s a great sale this weekend! ….and the jingle found it’s way out my sound card and into the recording Ahhh.. Windows defaults. I saw Win11 is coming .

Man I feel post. I had about a year of very painful forced (and unannounced) Windows 10 updates on my 2011-era self built PC, which has otherwise been a complete champ for the past decade. For most of 2019-20, every Windows update - if it completed - was a mess of changed display and USB drivers and misconfiguration, always resulting in "black screen with a mouse cursor".
Fortunately, the past couple updates have gone through fine, once I cleared out ~30GB from the boot drive for the update to download and install. Hopefully this ushers in a few years of stability. Apparently this machine will not be eligible for Windows 11, so we're in a sweet twilight of its old age. After this - who knows? Maybe go Apple.

It's harder to disable updates.
I did find Win 10 LTSC which is expensive ish, but a consideration for me if I choose PC instead after trying the Mac a while. No real update schedule to those as it's enterprise. No bloatware. Pretty basic version.

Windows Update changing usb and power settings without notification has RUINED takes, monitoring, and renders for me. I’ve had to fix it in device manager and group policy editor. And you need to update it for critical fixes occasionally and can no longer easily choose what updates you want. And the DPC latency on most newer laptops and motherboards is a bitch. Interface drivers are a bitch outside of RME. Tweak city even for Lynx pcie cards.
Yet I still need to keep windows around for certain programs. I guesnill get a Mac mini with the m2 or m1x for audio use. Windows 11 not being compatible with my laptops is a big middle finger to me. Especially because this machine will def last past 2025 Windows 10 end of service life. Windows has become just as annoying as Mac OS in the past two years.

I've been a Windows/PC guy forever. Mostly because I like knowing that I can build/upgrade/repair my computer without permission from Apple.

That being said, the new M1 chips and the looming prospect of Windows 11 in the next few years has me thinking about switching to a Mini one of these days, just maybe... Me too. There is a queasy, fight or flight response I have when thinking about Apple. I built all my computers with the freedom to reap the rewards of success or anguish in catastrophe.
Really, windows is my issue. I just got the Mac this Wednesday. I have been building my Windows install back up because I still need it for some projects. Well, it's still a nightmare. I have been trying to get Kontakt to install properly for two days straight, now. I've used their reg edit tool, windows regedit, native access. Every tool possible, and it just will, not, work. I'm really sick of that side of Windows.
The Mac so far works really well, despite using a lot of Rosetta and not having all my usual tools at my disposal.
I'm not delusional. I don't like the cult of Mac. Yes it has crashed. That doesn't mean it might work better for me, though. As much as I hate paying their premiums.
Long term plan is to build a killer PC to work along side the Mac. Both dedicated machines, probably disconnected from the internet whenever they get set up. However, the Windows 10 install will be highly, highly stripped down.
And the M1 runs PT much better than my Windows install, it seems. A more pro level M1 could really be good, I think.
Time will tell.

I use both Mac and PC. My PC build from 2016 has been the most stable go figure. I run PT HD on it with a native HD card. Both OS's pretty much converged since Apple switched to Intel years ago. To me one is not really better than the other. Plus most apps are cross-platform these days so I can easily switch between the two. I have yet to check out Apple Silicon. There was mention of high efficiency audio in the WWDC2020 graphic of the new ARM chip architecture. Not sure what that entails but if Apple devotes actual hardware resources to processing audio that would be awesome.

Well, had this M1 Mac since July.
My advice is = Do. Not. Do it.
Too much software just not Apple Silicon compatible yet. It'll be quite a long while. I knew this going in, however the other things that just don't seem to work like the video output dying on me, backup software failing, external hard drives unmounting themselves and not being found, constant software crashes etc, seem to be just part of this Mac.
Some folks mentioned the phrase "nothing but trouble" in the thread to describe their Mac and that phrase is coming to mind quite a bit. Some of that is due to Rosetta translations but a lot of it is plain stuff not working.
I'll see how this pans out for about a year, but so far it's not even close to the Mac paradise I always heard about.
It's a shame Windows continues to break itself. Will see what 11 is like a year from now.

this year I went from a maxed out 2010 Mac Pro grater 12 core to the newer 16 core grater. oh my goodness.like I flew to mars or something. 96k PT,Logic and Ableton all running at once in sync. nuts. I can't even imagine when the new M1 Mac pros are up to speed with everything. I also just got an M1 MBP running PT/Logic.abelton too and its pretty great
