A general purpose dynamic you'll still be able to pick up fairly cheap on eBay, is the Beyerdynamic M201. Think of it as a better version of the SM57. Works for snare, toms, guitar amps, some acoustics, and even vocals if you use a good pop shield

+1 on m201. They’re killer mics and can be used for so many things. M88 might be a contender as well but I prefer the m201 in most applications and they’re smaller and easier to place
For toms, I’m all about the Shure beta 181s these days for batter. I might still slightly prefer the Oktava MK012s but those are hard to come by since they’re made in Russia. For reso, you can’t beat an SE X1D either They are discontinued but can often be found dirt cheap when they come up. They’re great on tom reso, kick out, bass cab.

For toms consider clip on mics (I use the ATM350d), no need for a stand saves cash.

I‘ve heard it said that the m201 is what the SM57 would be if it were a mic. 🤣

I‘ve heard it said that the m201 is what the SM57 would be if it were a mic. 🤣 In fairness, in the old days of tape, the SM57 was able to do some great things with drums. And it still can be good on some things, but there are so many better options now. And for some effects, the SM57 was interesting. I recall Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull leader) using it for live vocals as it brought out a vocal effect he apparently wanted. And having said all that, I am not sure the SM57 today is the SM57 of decades ago. I have not kept up on that aspect.

IMHO not the same as "USA" 57/58/545? Yes! I had all those in the Vintage versions/non-Current incarnations. But... 57/58's can be sent off to Warren at Zen Pro, for the Archut Transformer upgrade. To get smoother/more SM7-ish. Since I rely on my 58 to sound less Choirboy-ish though, will probably leave mine alone. To further constructively distort, a Soyuz Launcher is the ticket! No news to most here, but SOME people do sound great on them Shure's. Including Ian in his heyday. Before his voice was permanently damaged Touring in the 80's. A shame as his 70's vocals both live/studio, serve as a vocal model for me. Amazing Baritone! (Ian that is ) Chris P.S. Also IMHO the Focusrite ISA Pre's, and even their "Air Button" thang, help clean up the current 57/58's tone.

A pair of Lewitt 540s subzero mics and a Beyer dynamic m201 would cover a LOT of territory

57's require a good mic pre to sound good for most things - preferably a mic pre with a lot of iron in the path. Compared to a standard chip based interface mic pre - that makes a world of difference.

I really like the 57 on acoustic guitar. 57 and neveish preamps are like cheese and tomato. Or peanut butter and honey... vegemite and avocado

Everyone has a preference for how you should spend your money. You had mentioned the ATM230 mics. I can vouch for those. They live on my toms. They were a big upgrade from the MD421s that I used to use.
I've heard a lot of good thoughts about the 201. But, everytime I hear it on snare, I think it needs way more 7k. I prefer an i5 for that. But everyone hears differently and we all work in different places with different gear. What I like might not be a good choice for someone else.

I think I’ll lock those in, they’ve been top of my list for toms for a while, and very reasonably priced. The m201 is out of stock everywhere in NZ, so I’m not in danger of picking one up just yet 😅

The mics I would get are spend it on room treatment. *engineering forum joke In that same spirit of engineering forum joke: The mics (or whatever gear is currently in question) don't matter. Only the performance matters. <eye roll added by me>
