I run a 15" MacBook Pro right now.
What would I need to get into an HD system. I would need 32 inputs and 16 outputs.
This would allow me to run 7 headphone mixes direct form the auxes in PT (plus my stereo control room) latency free, yes?

You'll need HD or HDX. You can do HD Native but you'll only be able to do a single low-latency cue feed (i specific 'low' latency because in digital, there's no such thing as *no* latency).
If you go with HD or HDX cards, you'll need a PCI chassis of some sort. If your MBP is newish, you want a TB3 chassis. That, plus an Avid IO (they come 8x8x8 standard but I'd recommend 16x16 if you plan on using PT for hw inserts when you mix).
There's an HDX card on the verb rn for $2400 which is a damn good price, btw. I've nearly pulled the trigger on it myself just because it's such a good price, but i really don't need an HDX 2 rig...that'd be WAY overkill for my operations.

Are you going to be inserting hardware at all during a mix?

seawell, I mix all in the box currently. Possibly would end up doing some basic stem mixing through hardware on projects that pay extra or something, but generally I'll stick with mixing all in the box.

So bgrotto, I'm talking $2400 for the HDX card on verb. $2k for a Pro Tools Ultimate EDU license $2k per 16x16 IO unit (2x for 32 inputs) So about $8400 used plus a few hundred for a PCI box?

An Antelope Orion 32 HD Gen 3 would probably be the best bang for the buck to cover all your I/O. I'd go with that or a Lynx Aurora(n) 32 HD. Either way you'd have all your I/O covered in 1 rack space. I wouldn't worry about Avid interfaces since you aren't doing hardware inserts. To cover your required I/O you'd need 2 Avid HD I/O 16x16 analog and it would take up 4 rack spaces(plus the fans are really loud).

As Benny implied, you could rock an older HD10 rig for tracking and it would work great for pennies on the dollar. That said, maybe you need a bigger write off and maybe HDX would bring in business. You could still use the more modern Avid conversion with an older rig, but your plugin options would be limited and you wouldn’t have offline bounce which is nice for roughs at the end of a long tracking day. I personally never use inserts at tracking, but I do mult things out and print parallel compression some times.

I'd be shopping used for all of the above, except maybe the PCI box (which will set ya back in the neighborhood of $600-800). You can find a PTHD license for cheaper for sure, or attached to some hardware. I got mine when I bought an HD Native rig some time ago. Honestly, I didn't realize PT Ultimate is fucking $2k for the education license. That is downright bonkers. WTF does a 'regular' joe gotta pay for it?

Hell...I think Mad Oak might even have an extra one for sale. I can ask my partner if you want me to double check on that.

I just went through pricing this myself and it really is a 10k investment, give or take.

Nearly forgot to mention a very important coupla potentially hidden costs to considering when contemplating a new Pro Tools rig: your soul and your sanity.🤣

The HD10 rig will use a .ptx session format, so there ought not be any problems there, and if memory serves both use the AAX plugin format. I think the biggest concern would be 32 bit plugins on the older rig, and 64 bit plugs on the newer. If you stick to just tracking on the HD10 rig, though, you should be able to avoid most or really all of the malarky.

I can't really see myself investing in an old, outdated computer rig like that. I'd probably have to go with a newer rig to feel confident. These newer HDX core cards. Can I run 2 of the 16x16's off of 1 card?

I guess I'm missing something, but I get around 5-10ms latency on my Reaper/MOTU setup if I don't run any high PDC plugs inline with the outputs. That's as good as my old SSL MX4 DSP card with "zero latency" monitoring, and certainly less than people can perceive.
I didn't even try the "hardware routing" that I schemed up in the MOTU mixer thing that would route hardware inputs to hardware outputs before sending stream mults to the DAW inputs.

Can I run 2 of the 16x16's off of 1 card? You can run 64 I/o over 4 interfaces off of one HDX card. Two slots in the card, and your can daisy chain one interface off another. So 4 total interfaces. One thing to consider at this point in time when choosing new / state of the art over older systems. The older systems will work great for tracking....but there is a caveat. I like to start a production and stay there. Making incremental improvements and mix decisions as I go along. I'm mixing while I'm still writing....so....going with an older system will pretty much stop you dead in your tracks if you have that philosophy. If it's track on one system, and mix on a different system, an older system will work just fine. If you need an expert that can provide support, systems, pieces of systems, used stuff, etc. for well below going rates, PM me. I've turned a bunch of guys here onto him.

As a note, I just got an offer to renew my PT vanilla annual subscription for $99 and it advertised 2021.6 will allow 256 tracks and 64 i/o as standard. Still more restricted than every other DAW on the planet, but enough for everything I do with the base version.

That’s all I’d need to track at your room (vs current state) if I were in your market. Not effing around with Reaper or Cubase on someone else’s dime; no offense.

I am loving getting balances at home, committing my plugin choices, and then pulling that session up at the project studio to re-evaluate on the Focals. You can do a ton with Vanilla these days if you’re strategic.
