So, the guys that made Unisum just released a saturation plugin called Kelvin. Anyone checked it out yet?

It was a coupon code they sent in an email for being subscribed to their newsletter. I also own unisum. What's the code? Took me some time to see that as well, but it was the same email promoting the release of Kelvin. The subject of the email was: "Out Now! Kelvin Tone Shaper ⏰ 48H Special Offer"

Demoed and just ran quickly thru the presets. That was enough to buy it . Then did just a couple minutes tweaking confirmed . Now if I can just totally learn it lol.

Almost a more versatile looking plugin of a silverbullet sort of...i mean..not quite..but kind of.
Looks cool. Probably better than Decapitator I'd think

Instant buy here too. I already owned Unisum so also got the coupon that made it $59, code was same as posted here.

That code still works, very tempting.

I tested it briefly. It's cool, definitely, but I'm not sure I'll be buying it. Saturn 2 can do more or less anything, and I've got a bunch of other saturators that do various cool stuff too. I think if you didn't have much in the saturation category, Kelvin is attractive. Or if you just like to collect these things.

Do you reckon the source would mean kelvin would have degrees of success.

The only other saturation plugs I have are Decapitator and Black Box. I really like Kelvin.

Do you reckon the source would mean kelvin would have degrees of success. I guess I just think it's a cool saturator with some cool features (which could be applied with good results on anything you want saturation on) but that I have several other cool saturators with cool features.

Got it here in the EU for 43 bucks and I collect good saturators because it’s important when mixing ITB.
Every time it’s a surprise they all follow different concepts. This one will take a bit learning but that’s okay 👍

So this is cool with major usability problems and break up issues when pushed hard, exactly like Unisum ime.
My issues:
1) for one stage only it’s extremely subtle until pushed. when pushed it sounds like a bad clipper. There’s a small sweet spot of “cool” on an individual track or bus between “you could use anything” and “nasty” and if you push cool too far it sounds like “digital distortion” before it sounds like a clipper.
2) if you stack the two stages and use defuzz and the emphasis eq wisely it can get very unique sounding but the eq is harder to use and dial in than other distortion and saturation plugs. The plugin code itself has issues taking the stack up of two pushed distortion stages at 8x oversampling and often audibly aliases before it gets cool. If I have to use a de-emphasis eq on the top to prevent it from getting trashy, I might as well use vintage warmer, Inflator, or v clip for many tasks.
3) the stack up for both subtle sounds and pushed sound for color isn’t as good as fuse plugs, sdrr2, and most tape plugs. I would not use it like the Fuse vpres or UAD Unisum pres. It’s not as cool in parallel as decapitator and vintage warmer.
4) this thing sounds plastic like black box and Phil’s cascade. Kelvin sucks on tom bus and overheads vs SDRR2, Radiator, and Fuse Vpre-562. Those do exactly what you’d expect without the plastic 2010 digital sheen that Kelvin has. Even vintage warmer with treble ticked down is less plastic.
I’m starting to feel this is another forum hyped plug like FirComp that just is hard to make sound good in real world use. Meanwhile radiator and fuse vqp radiator shelves are awesome in two seconds.
I’m going to try Kelvin on snare tonight.

Whew!! thanks for the hands on review!! I almost caved, then thought - nah, wait a couple weeks and see how the love is....
Analog saturation is still the best for me.

I liked it a lot giving some mojo to buses. Subtle but pretty noticeable when bypassed. And yes, I was gain compensating.
The limiter is good as well to shave some transients.

Use it more and more. To my ears, very nice on the low spectrum. Acts like some hardware because it also treats the dynamics like hardware.
I often listen at lower level that I can’t fool l myself with loudness. It's a good sign when I want to have something back because there is some bigness missing.
