I know, I know. We’ve all said it many times! However, I’m done. My studio is fully equipped. I got everything I need, analog and digital, and a few things I don’t. All my racks are full. Storage areas are full too.
There’s only one thing that can improve my output: stop reading about gear and finishing 18 songs that are in various states of disarray! I’ve been putting it off too long, for several reasons, but I’ve run out of excuses.
Tomorrow, I’m going to turn off forum notifications, log out and switch my mental focus for a few months. Lyrics need to get written, melodies need to be finished, songs need arrangements. No amount of production knowledge or gear is going to help with that.
I’ll see you on the other side…

Although the fact that many people with subjectively far inferior equipment (in terms of cost at least) to what I have are making great sounding tracks and actually MAKING MUSIC speaks volumes.

I've had this exact same thought for a while now. Chasing gear has become a distraction.

Once you realize with a little OB on the way in, you can get pretty good results itb, and start selling OB, it focusses your intent: music/recording or acquisition ?

I've had this exact same thought for a while now. Chasing gear has become a distraction. Chasing connection with people who have similar goals is a great thing, which is why I find myself here again and again. You all have been so encouraging to me — Yes, for the love of music, but also on a personal level regarding “real world / real life.”. Some good souls reside here. I’m grateful to hang with you all.

I don't make music for release, it's just an excuse to have something to talk about on the forums. LOL.
But stepping back is a good idea. I'm aware of at least two other people who are doing this now too. I can't do it but I think it's a good idea for some people.

When I got divorced I put myself on a "no new gear" policy and only bought things needed to keep the studio and my playing happening. I think I went 3 years only buying sticks, heads, strings, maybe some cables. In that time I still made a lot of clients happy, and still played a lot of music (I don't write). We all got into this to make music, but we somehow get bogged down with purchasing and amassing gear. stormymondays Enjoy your time making music. I hope the record turns out to be everything you want it to be!

Like "Godfather III", we all get "pulled back" eventually. I'm sure Les Paul was happy, he experimented with Gear overall! I took over a 3 year break, from competitive tournament chess. Became a Master at 22, instead of 18. College and chasing cute girls. Chris

I have to admit...reading stuff like this makes me wonder why I even bother to have the board. A thread about what a waste of time a thread on a forum is. Now I’ve seen it all.

Well, that's sad. I'm sorry for you. Good bye.
P.S. if anybody needs to reach me, I'm easy to find. My nickname is my band's name.
I really enjoyed this discussion, although I was hoping for a better ending.
Peace.

Well, that's sad. I'm sorry for you. Good bye. Let me ask you...if I walked into your studio and started talking to the people there and said, “man - you know you can really save a lot of time and money doing this yourself at home...” would that not irk you a little? Look - there have been times that I don’t even log on every day. Because I am recording and creating. I guess it rubbed me the wrong way - I’m human. Hope you decide to come back.

Johnken, no disrespect, I just understood him to be making a personal decision about a non net/social media focus for a while. I didn’t read it as a criticism of rgo at all.
Personally, I think you created and maintain one of the best net gear/ recording sites period: sure hope you take pride in that!

I have to admit...reading stuff like this makes me wonder why I even bother to have the board. A thread about what a waste of time a thread on a forum is. Now I’ve seen it all. I took a hiatus from everything audio for a few years and jumped back into the fray, it might happen again.. There's tons of cool people on this board, I've learned a ton over the years and I really appreciate how awesome it is to interact with other passionate members from both the audio engineering and musicianship circles. Again I don't see myself ever not popping in from time to time (or more), although I can understand the other side. When I'm posting constantly or active a lot it's usually because I'm going through an obsessive equipment purchasing cycle. Constantly researching, trying to find solutions to X.. We all have our reasons and mine are musical insecurities, I'm sure sometimes I procrastinate via a never ending cycle of upgrades. Either way, I don't find this board useless even if I'm not here for a while or don't have much to say because I've FINALLY locked myself into a solution (don't laugh, it might happen). For me personally John, it's the likes of you that keeps me coming back. As I'm nowadays nothing more than a musician, which hasn't done anything audio (technical or otherwise) in the last five years the equipment side is just a wallet drain.

It just rubbed me the wrong way. I guess I just use this place like a resource and don’t see how it could get in the way...see it more as a release from the drudgery that we sometimes have to deal with.

I refuse to leave in anger. Sometimes the obvious needs to be stated. I think RGO is a great forum, full of knowledgeable and friendly people that are happy to contribute their expertise, personal support (when needed) and carry out a civil discussion at all times. It's the polar opposite of "that other site". You should be proud, JohnkennThis is my post 1,345. I don't think I've wasted a single minute here, neither reading nor writing. I'm at a point where I can't and won't buy new gear, while I have a pressing need to direct my mind towards different pursuits, specifically songwriting. I, personally, can't do both. If I'm thinking about reverbs, transformers and mics I'm not thinking about lyrical subjects or filling my mind with "stuff" that will come out as songs. That's my own process, and I'm sure everyone has their own. So, for me personally, I think it will be useful to take a break from the forum, which I visit every day, many times per day (as well as taking a break from gear related news sites, cutting down on social media, etc.) I'm parking my books about recording, producing and mixing and picking up the ones about songwriting, etc. And I'll be back once I can hang my songwriter hat and wear the producer hat again. In fact, I can't wait to be back!

But do you have a vintage 1204 Electrodyne console that will surely call upon the spirit of Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys....?
