Coming in June. No price increase so that's good 👍 I'm glad some of these streaming services are moving to higher quality audio. Is anyone here set up to mix in Dolby Atmos? "To start listening to Lossless Audio, subscribers using the latest version of Apple Music can turn it on in Settings > Music > Audio Quality. Here, they can choose different resolutions for different connections such as cellular, Wi-Fi, or for download. Apple Music’s Lossless tier starts at CD quality, which is 16 bit at 44.1 kHz (kilohertz), and goes up to 24 bit at 48 kHz and is playable natively on Apple devices. For the true audiophile, Apple Music also offers Hi-Resolution Lossless all the way up to 24 bit at 192 kHz." www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/05/apple-music-announces-spatial-audio-and-lossless-audio/

That'll put the pressure on others to do the same. I have a Auro3D setup at work. I could do Atmos with it technically. But I don't have the Dolby Render engine yet. The new studio will have atmos capabilities though, but I'm about 2 years out from that being completed. Immersive is awesome though. Stereo sucks after you've experienced it.

They might have just got a customer. We'll see if the Amamzon HD price goes down or not from there. Lossless or bust for me, can't do "consumer quality."

For some reason, I’ve always enjoyed the interface/layout/experience of Spotify better, despite the fact that I use an iPhone/iMac/various iPads and you’d think the Apple paradigm would grab me more. I hope Spotify follows suit. Or maybe I should give Apple Music another try.

This is awesome. I'm one of those weirdos who actually use Apple Music instead of Spotify, so this is a pretty sweet feature to have, especially at no additional cost. I mean, fuck Apple in general, but whatever, I'll take it.

21 years of low-res is finally, hopefully, about to be history.

SNIP "... For the true audiophile, Apple Music also offers Hi-Resolution Lossless all the way up to 24 bit at 192 kHz." If only I could still hear up to 96Khz. But I'm not a true audiophile

I'm all in the apple ecosystem so it just is easier for me to have the Apple One bundle. I think Spotify does a much better job of recommending music as well. Music has gotten much better though so it is worth another look in my opinion.

I've been on Qobuz for a while now. It has the largest collection of hi-res audio in the world to my knowledge, and also pays much higher royalties of between 7-10X that of Apple Music last time I saw some data. I highly recommend checking it out or doing a free trial

Spotify has a much better layout, search functionality and music recommendation algorithm. I believe Spotify is set to release their own HD subscription version. I've been waiting on that to make the switch. But maybe now this has upended things for them and they will release HD for no extra charge as well.

They are but their version of "HD" is just CD quality, 16/44. It's a start. But be nice to at least have 24 bit. But I do agree with all the comments. They have it down for music discovery. I wish they would bring back the social features though, be so much more fun to send tracks to friend within the app vs me texting links to friends.

As a complete aside, prompted by this high resolution and quality discussion... I grew up on cassettes. Commercial releases and mix tapes. Frequency response was ~ 50hz to 12khz MAX, and SN of ~79db, and about a ~15 db dynamic range. That's probably being kind. Isn't an MP3 really just a digital version of a cassette tape?

Much rather have a 320kpbs mp3 probably over a cassette though

Is anyone here set up to mix in Dolby Atmos?/ Nope. And will never go there. I set up for surround 5.1/7.1 fifteen+ years ago. Dam, I think close to 20 years now..... Aside from mixing for films no one ever "requested" surround aside from some theme park stuff - and those were all custom surround - not a 5.1/7.1 setup. Atmos is killer. Unfortunately, few homes will embrace it as long as the powers that be continue to ask "why do we need all those speakers in my living room....." Been there. Done that. Love listening and Mixing in surround. Waste of financial time.

The Dolby tech then decodes to fit you setup in the "best" way possible. So you can have just a sound bar. A smart speaker. A sound bar and smart speakers. A full Atmos speakers array or just a tv. And it'll do the work. Doesn't mean it's going to stick. But Dolby was smart with that idea and then getting third parties to just put the tech in everything. Imacs, sound bars, game consoles, av receivers, tvs, ect. I think it'll do a lot better than a standard channel based system. Because it is flexible and works on many devices now.

Maybe even some 128kbps. Whether that's just cassette nostalgia for me or not may be debatable, of course...

I kind of like 128/96 MP3, they sound really dark. Cassettes are fun sort of like listening to music while the whole thing is on fire.

When they do that, is because they don’t “know better” or are trying to pull a fast one and not pay?
