I've had an L47 for years. I go through a cycle where I lust after something else and put the Lawson away for a while, and at some point rediscover how nice it sounds and wonder why I took it down in the first place.
Just put it up again to record some mumbly vocal ideas for a new song, and it sounds great.
Gene gave me a tour of the shop a few years ago. He seems genuine and dedicated, and even after all these years he actually seemed excited to talk about his tools and his process.
No real point here other than to share a bit of praise for a guy who does it right.

The Lawsons are some of my favorite people in audio!

That's good to hear. We only chatted for 30 minutes or so but that was definitely my impression.

A colleague of mine snagged an L251 and came by to compare to my studios Uptons. I preferred the Lawson, and ended up buying one. Scored their 251 / 47 kit with the tube and fet bodies...what an awesome package. Lawson stuff is so rad.
Btw- we have a couple of the plates gene made back in the 70s...his answer to the 140....they sound excellent. Way lower noise than a 140, and a nicely extended top.

I'm curious to know what about the Lawson made you prefer it to the Upton? Well, first of all, I wanna specify that they sound DAMN close. We shot them out on drum kit (mono FOK position), ac guitar, and voice. Once we engaged the '+bass' setting on the Lawson PSU, the mics were like 85% identical (with the '251' position engaged on the Lawson PSU, there was noticeably more low end in the Upton). The upton has a bit more of a 'hardness' in the higher reaches of the upper mids. I sort of equate that to a better sense of 'smoothness' in the Lawson. There's also a better sense of front-to-back depth in the Lawson. Plus, having the pad, LF contour options, and the fully sweepable pattern sorta set the Lawson over the top. We made some test records that I'll try to dig up. I've also done a few a/b comparisons since then, just to check the L251 i got against our Uptons; I'm quite sure those are readily accessible and I'm happy to post a file or two so you can hear and decide for yourself.

Yep, Lawson makes some absolutely killer stuff. The L251 is one of my favorite vocal mics I've ever used.

Yes, hats off to Lawson! I bought my L47MP new in 1997 and it's still in regular use with the original tube. I have a pair of the old L47C (cardioid only) and they are truly special on acoustic instruments, like nothing I've heard. Great company.

Thanks for the detailed answer and the files. I"ll listen later. Happy to! I hope you’ll share your thoughts here. I can hear the same things you mentioned. Really nice, pleasing low end on both examples, but the Lawson does handle the upper mids and highs more pleasingly. The Upton has some breakup in the cymbals (which are pretty trashy).

Cool I asked because many uninformed buyers have jacked up the used prices of the original thinking it’s convertible like the version 2 and later. The original should be significantly less.

Ok thanks! Yeah the price is 1800€, which isn’t too bad for over here. I’d only be interested in the mk2 because I’d love to add the 251 head!

I have a sample or two of my L47 but it'll be at least a few days before I can post something. Awesome! Looking forward to hearing it Here's a link. I didn't record this under the best conditions and I'm kicking myself for it because with a little thought I could have made this a great recording. This was a client of mine, at 6am, picking up his guitar and other instruments from my studio. This was after a long week of tracking everyday. I had just got the mic and wanted to hear it so I handed him a guitar and he sang/played this. No warm up. Both of us pretty exhausted. Single mic, L47 in cardiod. Singing/playing at the same time. There's some compression and reverb but no EQ on this track. Preamp was an AML ez1073. I didn't check the levels of the pre when I recorded this and at one point distort the converters, so be forgiving lol.
Edit: I'd love to know what you guys think of this vocal. I'm still in the testing phase of this mic. I've only used in on 2 people so far.

Whew - sounds great! Really, really nice. I love his performance! Also, I love that reverb. Mind revealing what it is?
