A cheaper Yamaha is the P-22, aka the "institutional" model, it is very solidly built and can really take a beating. Sounds good too.

If you're thinking used, ask your local piano tuner. YES! My local tuner and ex sometime keyboard player has lines on more pianos than he can count. A few Hammonds, too!

I learned this when my brother bought some random 100 year old piano for his place. It was kinda cool looking but not a "good" piano and he had paid a few hundred for it and more to get it moved. When he had the tuner over the guy said "Jeez man, next time call me first! I've got more good cheap pianos than I have places to put them." Years later when my brother moved he couldn't sell it and ended up paying the tuner to haul it away.

Used Institutional pianos can be either the best bang for the buck or the biggest money pit. Remember these things were not treated like a C7 so if you’re looking take someone who knows piano repair!

Man the U3's I tried today I didn't really like. They seem to have a very light action and very bright tone. Seemed to lack depth and richness, maybe the old U3's are the ones to get? They just felt very tinny.
I tried a Kawaii RX-2 which sounded amazing for 16k. I also tried a Steinway k52 which sounded very good and better than the Yamaha's but the action was not the best I think from age.
Kawaii's uprights are very nice but so dark and almost felt sounding that they seem like one trick pony's.
And of course the 45k steinway grand is the one I want....
I want to try a Mason and Hamlin upright, if I can find one.

I have a Kimball with great tone, but they are known for slow clunky action. Not for anything fast. A rockabilly guy called them "the Harmony Rocket of pianos", suggested a Baldwin made more sense for his purpose. I'm sure Jerry Lee Lewis could make a Kimball work, but it might be more of a theater piece than a musical one

Anyone have any recommendations for cheap character models/brands that aren't too "character-y"? I'd love to find something for $500 or less that has some vibe but not completely garage sale/throwaway sounding if you know what I mean.... Estate sales and whatever local sell/trade forums you might have.
