AT4047 is a little too "fat" for me on most things, but it's pretty good. I ended up selling mine. I'd like to try an AT4050 when I can. I've always been really interested to see if the AT4050 Fig-8 is as perfect as it seems on paper. If so, it could be a stellar performer for stand-up bass in a live environment -- always a PITA!

Another Alan Parsons connection... AT helped develop it, with his involvement IIRC. Like Phil Ramone and the 4033. Chris Wow! Phil Ramone helped design, what would later become, a major bluegrass mic?

Edit: Has anyone come across the 4047? It seems to get a lot of praise. I have one and I love it. For a number of years it was my only "good" mic, so I've stuck it in front of many different sources. I can see it not being for everyone as it's definitely got a sound/vibe, but for me it's a solid workhorse. //Chris

I guess ultimately what I'm looking for is a mic that isn't stringent in the mid / high frequencies but doesn't sound utterly dull or truly mono either. I noticed tonight that even the MD441 through a Neve 1073 / LA-2A gets rather sharp when pushed even off axis. You have to be careful with it.. That's one advantage of some tube mic's, they seem to magically dial that out whilst remaining open. Although you really have to like the kind of distortion they put out under compression.. Not as easy to find as one would think. The AT4047 was in the contender list, although if it's unbalanced in semi-close mic'ing then no point.

I have a matched pair of Mini K-47s … wonderful mics.
I was using them as overheads and recently moved them to room (on the floor) .. thunderous sound.
Have used them on vocal, percussion and acoustic guitar … all great.
I recently posted in the upright piano thread that I have the Lewitt 640 TS stereo mic which has freaky good phase as its literally both sides of a single capsule. I use it mostly on piano but also did stereo drum overhead and it sounded good .. not harsh with my K cymbals.

Audio Tecnica, Roswell, Lewitt, Vanguard. All extremely ok microphones. And all with some degree of parts or assembly in China, correct?
So anyhow, back on topic.
for those who have or tried both, which would you prefer? Lewitt 640 or AKG C414xls ?

Some of the better AT mics are Japanese, but I'm sure you already knew that, even some of the affordable ones. I don't know if Roswell builds in US or not but all their parts are Chinese. I'm pretty sure Matthew McGlyn has a busy US shop of some sort, just don't know all the details. It may be off topic but I find it fascinating. This thread has been pretty open so far.
As long as people are mentioning other mics the 3U Warbler MK I D was on my shortlist, as well as the AT4050, for possible attempted buys. I know this has been discussed, but not the Warbler. But my reality is I'm building an RK12 FET mic from bits and bobs. Not sure if I'll be able to make it multipattern or will have to settle on cardioid, we'll see when I get to building.
Don't know if this interests anyone else but there's something charming about $100 electret LDC mics. I used to use an AT3035. Now there's the SE X1A which looks pretty bad-ass to me. I realize this is a more high end thread so far but I find these mics sort of endearing, as a sort of utility mic, but even going beyond that into a utility low cost mic that might still sound good.
One of the lead vocals on my next album may or may not end up being sung into a $10 self built electret mic, because it just sounded good. Sometimes when people think utility, multiple purpose, to me that screams "flat response," which is typical in many of the electret mics. Something a lot of true condensers can't match, in fact. There was another thread on this topic recently.
I hope someone can answer Ward's question too. This is a pet topic of mine, utility mics, great thread.

50 and 40 series are asssembled in Japan not sure about 30 series. My AT3035 was "Made In Japan" they retired it though, now the 2035 is the Chinese version in the current lineup. Some of the old dynamic mics, that you can get for $50 on ebay, some of the electret SDC as well, are Japanese. Truly expansive, comprehensive brand.

I still find uses for my old 3035. In my experience it’s a pretty neutral mic. Compared to the cheap Chinese knockoffs of its day, the 3035 was positively warm! C1 was my first condenser. Never made it sound decent on anything. 3035 was next and will always have a soft spot in my heart. The screen is dented, the original suspension attachment has long since fallen apart, but that old dog still has life.

I had thought I had covered that with "All extremely ok microphones". I wasn't being disparaging, hope it didn't come across that way. Yes, hard to find anything without a China tie-in these days. If it isn't metal work, it's resisters or caps or something!

Like many I've used or owned many mic's from a slurry of manufacturers. I had a Warbler MKID / G67FET (liked the FET), multiple SE mic's (SE5600 wasn't great), various AKG mic's, multiple Shure mic's, AT's, Mojave's etc. etc.
The GZ67FET punched above its weight and for a $650.00 mic you can't go wrong. However for me at least the GZ wasn't on par with your highly sought after Neumann classics, out of every mic I've owned (some very high end) the only low end mic I would recommend without a second thought for an acoustic singer or light instrument pop style band is the ISK 2B.
It has depth, pleasant distortion, not a single sign of stringent frequencies, it's flattering, can take a singer with big lungs and it works on multiple vocal or instrument types. Sure the mids are a little recessed IMO which sounds great in sparse tracks but a little lacking in a big rock mix (it does take EQ fairly well though) and the ISK does have quite the proximity effect (which is fine as long as the singer knows how to use a mic or if used in omni inside a great space).
I think as a more utilitarian mic with a bit of tube oomph something like the Lewitt LCT 840 / 940 would be great, issue is I have a stereo pair of U89's, MC930's and a few Schoeps mic's. I'm more than set in that area..
The Lewitt's didn't have the same depth / sparkle / air or control as the ISK 2B and given the option I'd rather just wait until I can get another 2B. Sure I'm going by clips but the end result is the recording, yes the chain / room will impact massively but I somewhat ignore the balance of a mic as such because it can be EQ'd (if it's half decent) and my chain will impact the sound. I look for mic's that'll give me the least headache's nowadays (or doesn't display unpleasant distortion that will be exacerbated under compression), if I have to severely EQ / add (or fake) distortion, de-ess, add larger delay's etc. to get a mic to pop then it's the wrong mic to begin with. Excessive processing doesn't often lead to good results anyway..
Also final note, no the ISK can't stand up to a U67 and I'm not going to proclaim it's the best mic on planet earth. Although cost does factor in somewhere, this is a $500.00 mic and the U67 is $5700.00.. Although it's exciting when a low budget mic can stand on its own two feet and doesn't effect the professionalism or fidelity of a recording.

That's USD not HKD, AUD or Beaverpelts Yeah, we've recently moved over to a different import taxation system and now European retailers only advertise without sales tax or VAT. Sorry, I keep forgetting.. It's $6700.00 USD including taxes (from Thomann), Neumann is a bit cheaper in Europe though (and always has been).
