Guess I'll be the lone dissenter... I have an empty BAE chassis about 3 feet from me right now and constantly wonder if I shouldn't just sell the damn thing. Yeah there's a lot of options for gear. Some of them really great! But I just never seem to find much of it all that engaging & keep finding other ways to spend my money. For one thing the form factor can be kludgy and I've used plenty of racks that have zero ergonomics. When there's pairs of these and pairs of those its too easy for me to bump knobs w/o realizing it. For another frankly, my brain has a hard time comprehending dozens of different looking modules in a small space. The times I've been in a room with 2-3 racks that are filled with all sorts of stuff its a total mind fuck. There's no room to label anything and I can never remember what's patched onto what sources. If I were to get back into it I'd probably set up a rack like a true mini console. Fill it with 8 or 10 of the same EQ or whatever. Plus as a whole I'm past the "Noah's Ark" preamp trip of having a zillion options. Long term I'd love to get back to the point where I have 16+ identical channels. Sure I'd like some variety for different tasks & colors, but would rather have a "core set" of equipment. And I feel like there are easier, less expensive and more compact ways of getting that done. Agree 100%. Same preamp, same eq, print same compressor every channel gives unreal glue. More than any bus comp.

More than forty 500 series units here (I’ve lost count). They’re a great bang for the buck from the right manufacturers.

In fact that same issue is my only complaint with my silverbullet. They knobs can be very easily bumped. I'd love an Elma version..not really possible though.. But stick to stuff with stepped switch like grayhills and that solves that issue. LH95 and the CAPI eqs for instance.

Now, I'm leaning toward the LH95 -- but will likely stick them in a 1RU chassis to "keep 'em separated!"

Right now? 100% MOTU interface pres (they have this certain warmth to them)-> Fuse VCL-376 or PSP Infinistrip -> Slick EQ GE with saturation on and the same output stage. I can’t afford to have a ton of anything else in COVID. If I went 500 series, I’d want at least 8 of the same pres. I have my eye on a few things for a portable recording rack I’m building but need to do some head to head shootouts before committing. I’ll have to buy them as money channels first before going all in to fill a rack with the appropriately paired EQs.

The Daking 4 channel 19” rack pres I was going to buy were discontinued and it’s really hard to buy an RNP right now. So I figure 500 series is the way but I’m not big on anything API; most of it sounds almost bandpassed to me.

I sincerely thank you for that . . . but remind you, my work here is not yet done! There's still a p 1290 or two with your name on them, somewhere in the supply chain.

It’s one of the ways I have kept Audioscape afloat. One each of their buss comp, 1176A, and Opto. Like I said, I would be better served learning how to use all this shit. Lol.

I've always wondered why people would get say.. 8 or 16 lunchbox preamps instead of just buying a nice board. Wouldn't it be less expensive?
I can see the value in slowly adding to a lunchbox, this way you could get one at a time, but spending $8,000 on eight 500 series preamps doesn't make sense if a board can do that, and more.

I'm considering 8 API EQs on a lunchbox as a future purchase. I already have preamps I like. An API The Box II (which I don't have space for) board is 16K+ and it only has 8 preamps. I would still have to buy the 8 EQs. So, I save 16K by skipping the board

Some simply don't exist out of the 500 series, that's one reason enough for me. And the DIY savings, of course, you can save thousands in the end, when it's full up. Yes, you can do 19" DIY also but the 500 is so convenient, saves a bit of work not having to worry about the enclosure and power supply every time. It's ideal. The reasons I wouldn't want a mixing board/console are numerous, don't need/want most of what's there. But I agree that a console would be a good deal if you can fit it into your life / workflow.

I've seen Soundcraft boards modded by Jim Williams for 2G's. My friend tracks and mixes on an old DDA board and it sounds great. He did some Little Steven albums with it. It can probably be had for around the same price. Some 5k Amek consoles look good, I've seen some Trident boards for $2,500, I'm not saying boards are necessarily better, just curious why a good board with 16 or 24 preamp channels for 2-3G's isn't preferable to buying 8-16 500 series preamps.

If you’re building my a remote rig don’t underestimate how heavy a 500 series rack can be, especially when filled with transformer coupled mic Pres. I had a 10 channels of CAPI vp26’s, a 1u interface, and an Audient ASP 880 in a 6u rack as a mobile rig. That thing was like 85lbs! Not an easy lift. Edit: if I was building a new mobile rig I’d look at a more compact 8channel mic pre like the Phoenix audio DRS-8 or go back to the Audient. Way smaller, lighter and still baddass.
