I like the standard aluminum cases some mics come with. I have a nice mic that came in a paper box and would like to put it in a case. I'll cut the foam to make it fit, or trim the foam that came with it inside the box.
I've seen some aluminum cases online that are very reasonable, but they weren't mic cases.
I know that many hardware stores and sporting stores carry aluminum cases that are the same as those provided with a lot of the mics I've owned. In fact, some were identical other than the foam arrangement. The generic ones will have the foam in cubes so that you can arrange the compartments to your needs.
Thanks Bowie, I hadn't though of that. I'll take a look at Home Depot asap.
* Ha, I looked at Home Depot and the prices are from $60 to $ 100. I might as well buy a cheap Chinese mic that comes with a fancy case ;-)
I'l find something I'm sure. I'm in no rush.
Try Harbor Freight, Big5, or a sporting goods store. (not sure if they have those stores on the east coast). And take a look at Pelican Style cases, ime they're much nicer and more durable the metal ones. Sporting goods stores that sell guns/rifles etc are a good spot to check out as they use many of the same types of cases for firearms. Also, I think Monoprice has some cheap (plastic) cases that were nice but its been a while since I looked.
