Not sure about the construction, but maybe it is posible to do a custom mod?
Hoping to be able to justify and afford two LC25 and BT50 at some point. Happy owner of one of the former so far.

I have a question about the CAPI's... Anyone know if the gains be altered to allow for half dB steps? Jeff has said "no" before....

I have a question about the CAPI's... Anyone know if the gains be altered to allow for half dB steps? Jeff has said "no" before.... Think it's possible but know he wouldn't do it himself. I think due to the topology of that EQ you can't predict the resistors needed for it so you just have to get a resistor ladder and start trying stuff. Think I read that somewhere once when he was asked about it. Im sure if you asked he'd tell you which resistors you could try swapping out. But that's about it.

It’s possible. If you want to mod one PM me.

I've had a really good time mixing a record with my Console 1 and the Softube API emulation ("American Class A"). I love the fixed frequencies of the eq, the fixed steps, how a 2dB boost REALLY boosts things, etc. Edit: I was really thinking of the 550A, not the 560! I have AmClassA, too. I like it a lot. Where are you running your drive/drive character knobs? It feels way more wild and out-of-control than the drive/drive character parameters on other C1 strips.

I went for the “default” of drive on 5 although I know this console’s drive is different. I need to re-read the manual about this and also about the compressor modes.

32ch Api 1608 here at my joint. About 10ch of api eq. Couple 560s and the rest are 550a of various vintages. The remaining slots in the desk are a mix of eqs.

Anyone heard the Stam SA-550A? It is listed as sold out on Stam's website, but I haven't found a single comment on any forum from any users.
If this thing's available again, it could be a good option.

Nice, bgrotto! Give us your thoughts on your favorite EQs. I like api eqs a lot. 550a is generally my favorite sounding, but I actually prefer the b for the additional band and freq points. I a,so really really like the electrodyne 511, but am reluctant to recommend them to anyone without a few other more well rounded units. I mix mix with a pair of maags inserted in my mix buss. Don’t akways use em, but I usually do. Like em a lot there. And, I really dig ssl eqs. Plugs don’t come anywhere close. Maybe the Acoustica sand one, but the others just don’t do what my hw does. I keep finding myself buying more of those of late. Last, the kush electras are excellent sounding and are a staple for me when tracking. I have a bunch of them in my desk. I wish they upper mid band extended higher, and in general I dont love them for cuts, but they’re excellent boosting eqs and really sound killer. I modded the low band on all but two of mine to a lower freq which made them much more useful for my needs.

I love the fixed frequencies of the eq, the fixed steps, how a 2dB boost REALLY boosts things, etc. That got me thinking... how AWESOME would it be to fill an API lunchbox with 8 560A modules? It's still eye wateringly expensive, but unlike The Box, I could actually fit the damn thing in my studio! So, if any of you has an API desk or is running 8 or more channels of API EQ, I want to hear from you... Edit: I was really thinking of the 550A, not the 560! Having both types can be useful. Maybe 6 and 2?

I have modded many API 550A EQs for 1 and 0.5dB gain steps. I don't know why it shouldn't also be possible on the BT50.

I don’t want to be putting words in to Jeff’s mouth but I think what he is really trying to say is that any such mod isn’t supported by CAPI. It enough of a pain in the ass to support a DIY kit, modded it’s an exponential pain in the ass. Can it be done sure it’s just you or somebody like Matt can figure it out and along the way and once you get there your on your own.

Anything worth EQing is worth EQing at least 2db.

Well, it's decided then! When I win the lottery or get a few extraordinarily well paid jobs I'm getting 6xAPI 550A and 2x560, as johneppstein suggested. That, plus the hardware I already have, would be almost as having a console, minus the parts I don't really need and can't fit in my studio anyway.

That is basically my plan with CAPI kits. Want to be able to track drums/a band with EQ and Comp going in, and mix the same. :-) Start piecing it together one at a time!

I've seen him occasionally print a vocal through the desk to warm it up a bit but that's as far as it goes. He still gets some great mixes ITB. I usually ask for one revision on my stuff if needed but he's told me of projects with upwards of 20 recalls, crazy.

I still mix through it.and all the eq's are engaged for the extra vibe..the summing makes a big difference to my ears.I will leave some eq's set like kick 550[+5k,-400 hz and + 50hz...overheads maybe stay @ + boost @ 7-10k.but the faders are all locked.[use the Avid S1's for faders] Ive been constantly flip flopping between no budget indie rock to film/TV commercial cues.sometimes recalling between 5-6 songs daily.
