Bit of a ridiculous thread, I know. But just fishing for some thoughts here. I've got a CAPI Sumbus 16ch sitting here waiting to be built. I've also been considering upgrading my interface. Currently on a Motu 828ES/16a combo, with a Dangerous Convert-2 DA. It's the perfect amount of channels for the Sumbus, in addition to using my outboard.
I've been considering the Lynx Aurora (n), as that seems to make the most sense in terms of 'upgrading' the Motu conversion over say the Apollo X stuff, which I initially had planned. But getting 24 channels of Lynx Aurora conversion is a lot more than I should be spending.
One thought I had was getting an 8 channel Lynx with the ADAT card, and using that to send 16 channels out to the Motu 16a for sending to the Sumbus. But if I track everything with the Lynx's AD conversion, then ultimately just send everything out colored through the Motu's conversion, wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of upgrading to the Lynx in the first place? And I'd also be limited to tracking at 48k in order to utilize all 16 ADAT channels.
Am I overthinking this stuff?

I personally have found that the A/D is more important on a summing/mixer capture setup. Because you want to capture the magic of said device as well as possible.
That said, a shitty DA isn't doing you any favors. But none of the gear you have mention using I would consider shitty. It'll all decent or great.
Honestly, before you go down that rabbit hole, build the Sumbuss and start using it with the converters you have now. No sense in getting all reved up to change stuff when you haven't even heard it with the current stuff. You need to a baseline at least before trying other stuff.
also...so jealous of the kit! I want one so bad. Been out of stoke forever haha

It's just that I've heard the same about having a great capture AD for the 2-buss, which led me to looking at a Dangerous AD+. But then, I started adding up the numbers between that and the Dangerous DA, and the Motu stuff. I could just sell it all and get a Lynx Aurora (n) for similar money.

The Motu converters are no slouch. I’d stick with Motu and use the Capi sumbus and then see where you’re at. At this point converters are so good that we’re fighting over how many more inches we can get to the goal line, while the sumbus alone might move you a few yards down the field. A lot of great sounding records were made on stock 192’s.

Well I still think the best course of action is to build it all and then try it with what you have. Then if possible, demo a Dangerous and a Lynx and make your call then. It can make a difference, when I was able to use a SSL Duality console i did NOT like the Lynx Aurora 16s running at 44.1 or 48k to capture my mix. I MUCH preferred the RADAR 6 with Nyqust cards running at 96k. So I did all my prints to that unit. But the Lynx were my DA's still into the console, I never really felt like that was holding me back. It just never sounded the same when I was monitoring through the console what I recorded back. Not until I recorded my mix to the RADAR. But again, you need to establish a baseline first before jumping down that rabbit hole. So I'd stick with what you have and then learn how the Sumbus changes your workflow if at all and how it sounds. THEN you can start trying to decide if the AD and/or DA's are helping or hurting and how to change that. Don't get ahead of yourself.

AD is so unsexy yet so necessary, one of the biggest mistakes I see is people mixing and matching good AD that just doesn’t fit well together.

I've been eyeing that Lynx Aurora(N) converter myself.

It’s a game of inches, centimeters . Smaller leaps in quality but always at a cost $ AD and DA are important on console/summing and mix capture I’m using Burl MS fir console and dangerous AD+ for capture. I felt the Burl DA was a step up from the AVID IO DA. And of course it always comes down to personal taste cause all this stuff has a sound

Way overthinking it. Honestly, when I switched to MOTU from my SSL converters I really didn't notice any tangible difference. Maybe if I had A/B'd back and forth I would have noticed it, but I didn't do that.
Then when I removed the mixer and went all ITB, I also didn't notice much difference. I mixed the same song twice, with the ITB attempting to emulate the outboard gear as close as possible and honestly it wasn't nearly as big of a difference as I had imagined it would be.
Now I'm all ITB for mixing with MOTU I/O and it's the best work I've ever done.

Yeah - I know some people have said they noticed a difference...when I have used summing, I haven’t really been too concerned with it, though.

In some larger scale systems where different conversion was used to track a band or even just a drum kit you can hear the difference in phase response in the bleed.

Haven't come across that.
