KRK V6S4 is a lot better than the HS8. You’ll have to learn it but it reveals a lot more for only a couple hundred dollars more a pair.
And the KRK V4 and V6 are boring than the HS8 but more accurate. The V8 is more exciting and less accurate midrange. Upper mid dip from the woofer breakup and Smaller sweet spot from beaming. There is no always active limiter on the plate amps killing transients and impulse response. The HS5 and 7 suck and have gross tweeter resonance and no bass. You might as well get the NHT Super Zero or Super One if you want that NS10 type of sound; they’re more accurate, sealed, paper cones, and you can use a much better amp than the Yamaha plate amp that would have been considered crappy even in the 80s.
The only 8” woofer two monitors I can recommend for mixing in good faith are the Yamaha HS8 *, Quested H108, and Quested V2108. Everything else I’ve heard has major midrange issues compared to the standard 6.5” woofer crossed over to 1” dome tweeter nearfields and bookshelves. Yamaha overcomes it by getting bass extension from surface area of a 1970s Japan fi poly cone type woofer instead of movement. Quested from crazy awesome and expensive 8” volt woofer crossed over to a 1 1/8” morel tweeter that is definitely a little dark but still very detailed.
* The always active limiters on the Yamaha HS line prevent you from hearing dynamics accurately so those are still a hesitant recommendation. The HS8 are just way better than the cheapo JBL 305, resonant Kali LP, awful current Mackies, and KRK Rokit 5 G4, which isn’t that bad anymore, just the port resonates and the Kevlar tweeter Gibson is using has zero detail compared to the Kevlar one in the V series and Focal Kevlar one.

The HS8 did not agree with me at all, I sent it back the next day I opened them, I was so let down by those. KRK are bright and punchy, which can be fun, but also fatiguing if you are sensitive to treble. But they are great monitors to mix on. Especially for punchy "modern" music, whatever that means, rock, electronic, rap, etc.

VXT is usable but has that sear that British (eg Proac, PMC, Harbeth) and Japanese (eg Yamaha, Fostex, Sony, rando 70s stuff) speakers can have.

I think mine were V6 Series 2, back a ways, my first "proper monitors" used them for years. I'm really curious about the new ones because people, like you, are saying they are even better. I might even want to hear some Rokit 5's because I've never heard those either.

Of course that means the tweeter has less detail than a JBL 305 but it’s a less offensive speaker. If you go hifi, the cheap Elac soft domes are okay. A few people recommended me them including ericn and they’re certainly better than any cheap powered monitor

Happy enough with the JBL 705P's here.

I was just shopping the ELAC B6.2 the other day for my "piano zone" ended up with Polks though because they were significantly cheaper, and it's not a critical area for super high fidelity. I'd still be curious to hear the ELAC's though, speakers are so much fun.

Any opinions about the Alpha series vs the KRK series 4?

Any opinions about the Alpha series vs the KRK series 4? KRK V all the way. Alpha doesn’t even use Focal woofers.

Happy enough with the JBL 705P's here. I’ve been a bit concerned with a lot of reports of failure with these. DSP scares me, sounds like when the goes down it’s the end of the road for speakers

DSP scares me, sounds like when the goes down it’s the end of the road for speakers I haven't heard of any. I ran LSR28P's for close to 20 years, no DSP there. Some minor amp component failed in one, and they were not serviceable without a specialized 'extender card' jig to hook up all the components out of the box.

Special extender card for amp service, now that’s so Harmon.
