my setup as it stands is an 8 channel focusrite scarlett 18i8 with a ross martin AD adding 2 additional input channels and a ross martin DA adding 2 additional outputs which i use for monitoring. both connected via spdif. so in real terms 10 in / 8 out.
the focusrite monitor path is not that good and the ross martin DA fixes that issue. so i set the clock master to internal on the focusrite and the ross martin clocks to the focusrite and all is good.
been having trouble incorporating the RM AD into the setup to get 2 extra input channels. could never get it working properly during sessions so just stopped using it due to keeping the session moving. I'm now trying to sort this out and notice in the focusrite faq it says when using an external spdif input device (ie RM AD inputs) i need to set the focusrite to slave via spdif.
what does that now mean my RM DA monitor chain. the focusrite faq doesn;t really talk to having both spdif input and outputs working at the same time. will the RM DA now be out of sync or will it slave still?
do i need a master clock?

Have you set the Focusrite to receive clock from SPDIF input? (Ross Martin)
Does the DAC still work now? The DAC should receive the clock from the SPDIF input as well (Focusrite output.)
That's what I would try first.
Not sure if an external clock would help or not.

i'll be trying that asap. sometimes the issues don't become apparent immediately so thought i'd ask.

Spdif and aes always receive their clock from the device preceding it.

Should be fine. It'll clock the same.
Better option if they have it is to use the word clock though.
Spdif can be a bit finicky in general so you may occasionally have issues. Word clock would be much more reliable. Then you could just pick something to be ma master and chain them together accordingly.
I'd imagine the ross martin gear would make a better master clock anyways.

The ADC is master....interface is slave, and the DA wont have a setting because its always slave to whats feeding it.
The ideal scenario would be WC from the ADD to the interface AND the DAC....but many ADCs wont have two WC outs....and since modern DACs seem to all reclock the singal anyway, its sort of an academic discussion.
