I had no idea you were in Durham back then, Dan. I was living in Raleigh at that point, but working in Durham at Wes's studio a few times per week. I bet you got that CD at Poindexter Records on Ninth Street. Long gone, I'm afraid, but that's where Wes bought me a copy of "Blood On the Tracks" one day at lunch and said I needed to learn it. He was right. Lived in Raleigh in the mid 80's (1984 IIRC) and School Kids Records was all the rage then. Lived in Durham for a semester in spring of '91. I didn't even care about being at Duke when they wont their first Bball championsip. Schoolkids is still open in Raleigh and in Chapel Hill, believe it or not. Oh, and Duck Fook.

Cool thread. I lived in Durham 2001-2003 for a while. Going to college. It's a shame I wasn't more connected with the music community, but I was very aware of the buzz in the area and did catch bits of it that were on campus or near campus. Think I bought a Lets Active CD in one of the long standing record shops around there. My favorite song on that disc is "Room With A View." Those were the years I decided writing essays and normal career paths weren't for me, and music was the thing, so I'm sure the things I was seeing and hearing were a part of that. I've never used an ADAT or a reel to reel but it's fun to hear about them in sort of an archaeological way, the history of recording. It really is fun to learn about how people were doing things at different times. I remember learning that the BBC had several really ling/shallow splicing blocks for different length crossfades and fadeouts. Radio people at the time ALL had to be well versed in tape editing, Both hosts and tech staff tended to know.

Exactly why escapes me, but I remember dumping ADAT tracks to a Teac A-3340S and doing razor edits. I wasn’t high....
——-
It was to adjust the length on some stuff that was being dropped an octave....

That sounds like the kind of task where one tries to invent a creative argument for why the song doesn't need it to try and convince the band...

I went there for that one semester and still feel the same way. I've attended UNC-CH twice (undergrad and grad school), so I've given them quite a bit of $ over the years. I've worked at Duke twice (in two different roles), so they've paid me some $ over the years. It may seem my loyalties are misaligned given the flow of $, but man, no way. I just can't pull for those guys. Though I'm a big, big fan of the hospital, and particularly the pediatric blood and marrow transplant team...

I have to agree Duke Hospital was very good to me during a really rough time about 10 years ago. I did find it funny that the walls in the gastroenterology wing were painted Carolina blue though 🤣 I hope I'm not derailing the thread too far but had to chime in on some Dook hate LOL. It's awesome seeing so many NC people in here. the other mark williams is the studio you worked at in Durham where Soundpure is now?

I didn't even care about being at Duke when they wont their first Bball championsip. I was there during a couple of championship years, I went to one game, reluctantly. I was heckling the players, which maybe wasn't so nice, and I don't think my gf was very amused. I don't do that any more but I've realized since then the only sports I like to watch are combat sports. And I've never liked it when people think they're too special, haha. A lot of that on that campus, very privileged people to put it simply. Didn't really fit in there as the scraggly rock and roll character. But there were some great teachers and classes, which was the important element. And all that great music that seemed to be everywhere all the time. The hospital was good to me in one of my hardest times also, can't fault them at all.
