RGOs.
The last two weeks I researched a lot because I planned to buy a controller unit.
I was even considering a SSL Nucleus.
In the end of the day it's with all controllers the same.
If I want control 3rd party plug ins I grab the mouse again.
That was my NO to a bigger investment yet.
I decided to do a test drive of the new Behringer X touch line first, and here is WHY:
1. Its plastic build so was for decades the old Mackie Control. 2. It had the least trouble reports on the internet by users and I think B. sells tons of it. 3. They are extremely fast with a new firmware just in case something goes wrong. 4. It is a modular build. I can start with the X touch one, if I want more I can extend it.
1. Build Quality mhhh OK...
Mine was a B stock for 100 Bucks.
I don't complain because I wasn't expecting a HQ-build, or a steel housing, or a steel jog wheel. It's a hard plastic build and not meant for the road. Everything feels good and the layout is indeed smart, very smart.
2. Just for automation?
That's what I thought as well. To my surprise the motor fader is extremely fast, much faster compared to my old Frontier Alpha Track! The channel switch buttons are next to the fader and this is much faster compared to using the mouse - and it's way more intuitive to grab a fader /panpot.
Larger jumps with the bank knobs, which are also next to the fader. This is a simple logic, but I ask myself why Frontier was not doing this.
It makes mixing ITB extremely fun. Navigating the session is a breath with the jog wheel.
3. Implementation MCU-Pro in Logic.
I had to update the firmware after this the Behringer X-touch One worked like a breath. There is one minor assign fix, which I will clear with the support.
No stuttering no nothing even if I work extremely fast with the CH selectors to level faders. Instantly big smile and this is not a console, but it feels excellent to work this way. Much better compared to the mouse.
Did some research users can go deep in Logic X with the customization. It is possible to do your own layouts / assignments saving them to the Function buttons. For the start I leave it like it is, I don't see a reason to change it.
Sorry to say it but the Behringer haters are wrong.
For 100 bucks this thing is a no-brainer...
LOVE IT.

You have to either boot it in CC mode or Mackie, HUI etc. mode, you can't go between the two on the fly.

I got the regular X-Touch and when I needed to repair the encoder after a few years use, I bought the X-Touch One. I think I might like it even more!
One thing, though: the One is not modular, from what I've read. But maybe things have changed. I just got my repaired regular X-Touch so I'll see if both can work at the same time...

On YT Behringer said that the whole line can work together. It's funny that you like the one even more...

I've been looking at that too, to replace my old Fader Port (original). Nice to see a good review on it. I wonder how well it will work in Nuendo?
Also, where did you get it? The few I see are now selling for over $200. That's a bit more than I think it's worth. I would buy it for $150 or less.

it would be cool if they made it with a trackball instead of the jogwheel. controller with integrated mouse.

Place a trackball mouse next to it done. I have the trackpad under it, the best thing ever.
BTW I was wrong the housing is aluminum sides and knobs are plastic.

I've had the X-Touch (not the X-One) for 3 or 4 years now and use it with Logic. I have it on a dolly so I can record myself away from the mouse and keyboard and have customized a few of the function buttons to facilitate that. It can even re-select a region for recording ..again, while away from the keyboard and mouse.
When mixing and editing one hand has the mouse and one hand is on the X-Touch. The track-wheel/scrubber has a light detented feel that is great for incremental editing and timeline movement. I always keep the buttons on the bottom next to the track wheel in "Zoom" mode so I can resize tracks on the playing field. They are perfectly placed on the unit and I use them and the transport functions all the time. No need for a trackball, at least for me.
I almost never use the faders. In fact, as far as I'm concerned they get in the way and are too noisy. Not a big deal when mixing, but I mix and automate as I go and I hate it when they move while I'm tracking. I wish it had a "disable faders" function. One workaround is to create a bunch of "dead" tracks around the one you're recording on, but that's just ugly. The buttons all have a little bit of a gooey feel, but you get use to it. The solo and mute buttons are super handy when A/B-ing tracks - you can't do that with a mouse and I doubt you can do it with the X-One.
Every once in a while it hangs up. Maybe once a session. Turn it off and restart it, and 15 seconds later you're back up and running.
I give The X-Touch an "A-". It would get an "A" if the faders were dead silent. Getting the X-One would be a no-brainer for me if it had that row of customizable function buttons for things like arming tracks. It would sit at the piano and I'd use it exclusively for recording.
I too was skeptical about Behringer, but the X-Touch has been everything I hoped it would be. If it's the same for the X-TouchOne, at that price it's going to be hard to beat.

Seems well configured, normal control surface learning curve, but if you prefer the more tactile approach: seems a good option.

Nice, but it's missing just a few buttons that would force me to buy it.. Undo and Enter. I can think of a few more, but these are super convenient to have when you're recording away from the computer. A bank of 4 or 5 programable function buttons would be huge.

You can assign the function buttons to your taste.....I record a lot so the factory layout is perfect for me....

Its also fun to use it... it's the second day and I still smile - it makes my working life a little easier. Automation today was much faster compared to the trackpad.
Sure - it's not the answer off all questions, but it's interesting that Behringer tried to make a statement.

I have the X-Touch 1 and am using it with Reaper in Windows 10. I've had mine for a couple of years and no issues. It's metal, surprisingly well-made and designed, and I truly like it. I've had other Behringer gear that died about an hour out of warranty, but this piece seems to be the B-word exception.
I'm not using mine for writing automation or anything fancy; mostly just for remote transport control. I also have a keyboard and mouse connected to its built-in USB hub on the back panel. Works great. Lights are very good; I can always see where I am, status, etc.
Recommended.
The customized overlays are also a nice touch.

For the moving fader problem while tracking....simply press the master fader button - problem solved. It has a row of custom function buttons like the Mackie Control had it.
With the hanging up is your unit running on the latest firmware 1.08? Disconnect Power Press the CH REC button connect power and see if it says 1.08 and after this UP. If not download the newest firmware on the Behringer Website, put the unit in update state, and upload the firmware. Made my unit running just fine no drop-outs no nothing.

Where is this "Master Fader" button? There is a "Flip" button above the master fader. We're talking about the X-Touch, right? There is a Record button in the Transport section and each channel has a record enable button, but there is no CH REC button.
